Upon General Gates’s decision to withdraw quietly and secretly from Burgoyne’s advancing army, Fermoy failed to deliver the message to his entire regiment on Mount Independence and, against orders, set fire to his lodging upon leaving. The fire acted as a bright light to expose the secret withdrawal of the Continental forces. [Echo]

x Fielding, John, Sir—(1721–1780) The social reformer some called “the Blind Beak,” he was appointed as London chief magistrate and head of the Bow Street Runners when his older brother, Henry, founder of that first paid law-enforcement squad, died.
