CHAPTER 1
“Why aren’t we going to cross it?” she asked again.
“Because, Mah Kush-la, this is a place for the damned who enter Hell. Some of the souls we feed on become so weakened that they become ensnared in the currents of the water and are unable to escape it.”
River’s eyes darted back to the water, her full mouth parted on a breath of realization. She shuddered and goose bumps broke out on her arms. “Wraiths,” she murmured.
“Yes. Thousands of them are trapped in the water.”
“So it’s the River Styx?” Hawk asked.
“Human mythology twisted it some. It is not the boundary between Hell and Earth, but basically yes, the humans who glimpsed the Asharún through veils called it the River Styx,” Magnus replied.
