“Ssh.” He smoothed the hair away from my damp brow, pressing a cool hand to my burning forehead. “They will not wait long before pursuing,” David told murmured, lifting me gently so that I was cradled in his arms. “Are you strong enough to walk?” he asked Mom who had slipped, unnoticed, to his side. “I can take you on my back if not.”
“I don’t know…” she replied softly, almost apologetically, running a gentle hand through my hair. Her touch was cool – deliciously so – and I sighed in pleasure, knowing that we were going to make it out alive.
“Here,” David crouched down, still cradling me close to his chest. “Climb onto my back and hold on around my neck. If we can make it down the mountain side safely, I can transform when we reach the ground. We have no time to waste. We will have, at most, a few minutes’ head start.” He glanced back at where Lupion, surrounded by growling pack members, was massaging his neck where a great, purple welt had sprung up. “We must be as far away from here as possible when they decide to take up the hunt. None of us are safe. Not yet.”
Chapter10
We ran.
I remember the flashes of the sun through the trees, hypnotising me as I lay sprawled across David’s back before dizziness overcame me and I buried my face in his soft, golden fur. I remember the weight of my mother’s body pressed securely against my back, holding me in place and keeping me from sliding off as I slipped in and out of consciousness. I remember the pounding of paws thundering behind us as the wolves chased after us, and I remember struggling to differentiate between that and my own heartbeat.
“Hold on,” my mother kept saying. “Hold on, darling, we’re almost there. Almost at the car.”
I could hear the snapping and snarling of the wolves and the howl of the wind in the trees. I could hear the blood in my ears and the throbbing of my arms. I could hear the whisper of the grass as I was laid carefully down, my head propped up in my mother’s lap, and I could hear the grinding of bones as David shifted back into the man I now recognised as my saviour.
The smell of the forest shifted and changed to the dank, chemical smell of polyester and pine air freshener, the ground beneath me no longer soft grass but the scratchy, synthetic material that I recognised as belonging to my car.
“Get in!” I heard my mother shout, terror stark in her voice. “Get in now!”
And then he was there, beside me on the back seat. My bear was still with me.
I smiled blearily up at him as the car coughed into live, blocking out the barks of rage outside. “David…”
David smiled down at me and rested a strong hand on my shoulder. “It’s okay, Wildgirl. You’re going to be okay. We all are.”
I sighed as peace swept through me and allowed my eyes to close.
I believed him.
Implicitly but I knew we were not out of the woods yet.
The wolves would want revenge on David. They would also want revenge on us.
Something told me this was far from being over...
