  The platform was virtually deserted even though the express service to Euston was due in four minutes. He couldn’t keep watching the entrance, so he fixated on the weed-strewn rails instead, until the sound of the approaching train scorched along the track. If this was Kate’s idea of some sort of dramatic denouement, he had to hand it to her, she knew how to tighten the screw to within a hair’s breadth.

  He lifted his eyes and exhaled as the train thundered in, the ground vibrating beneath his feet. It was over, he was finished…

  He spotted her hair first.
