Forever and a Knight Page 27

by Bridget Essex

  Attis is here.

She's wearing a smartly tailored pair of black dress pants, a ruffled white shirt, a suit jacket and shiny black shoes. But I only notice that a little (though, admittedly, it's sexy as hell). What I really notice is that Attis is right here, right in front of me. That she's standing here, her warm fingers gripping my arms, her beautiful mouth curving up into a smile. I'm not imagining it.

  She's real.

  And she's in my world.

Attis steps forward again, and then she's wrapping her arms tightly around me as I hold her so close that a sob escapes me, gasping out into the air as she buries her mouth in my hair, on my cheeks, kissing away the tears.

“But how, Attis?” I whisper, staring up at her as she traces the pad of her thumb gently over my cheek, wiping away a warm tear.

“The Ursa,” Attis whispers. “The Ursa helped me through. And because,” she says, voice thick with emotion. “I chose you.”

Behind her, I see something big and silver moving between the trees of the graveyard—but perhaps I imagined it.

All that matters is that, here and now, we hold each other, kissing and creating a brand-new, perfect memory.

And Boston rises around us, alive and thriving.

  Author’s Note:

I began writing Forever and a Knight when our beloved cat, Kit, was still alive. He would sing to me every morning, in his sweet kitty voice, and I told him that I was writing a character that was very much like him into the book as I held him, kissing his sweet head.

But halfway into writing this novel, Kit became sicker with his advanced kidney disease. And, one day, one of the most precious and beloved creatures I have ever cherished passed away in front of my eyes, while I held him, weeping.

For a long time I couldn’t fathom finishing this book. I loved the story, the characters, dearly, but I had based Wonder on Kit, and I was so depressed after he died. But, one day, I opened the document and read the story I’d written thus far. I cried at the parts about Wonder, but that day, I wrote the next scene. And I felt a tiny bit better.

Writing this book, this story that I loved so much to create, has been a healing experience for me. Ever since I was a kid, experiencing horrific homophobia, I have turned to writing to help me through the darkest times and most painful moments of my life. And it always has.

This story has so much of my hope and healing in it, my pain and sorrow, too, and in the end, just like Josie, I got my second chance. Natalie and I have adopted a little kitten named Kai who will never, ever replace Kit--but he isn’t meant to. He’s a cherished creature that we love with all our hearts, just as we loved Kit.

And the story comes full circle.

Thank you so much for buying this book, for giving this story a chance. I poured my heart into it, and I hope, very much, that you enjoyed it.

  Warmly,

  Bridget Essex
