  Brendan Port

  Six Months Ago

“Alexa! Bring the girls quickly,” Lucas Gallagher urged, his whispered voice echoing in the empty hallway outside the entrance to the loading bay.

He rushed past the scanning panel, not looking to see if his daughter followed. He knew that she would be behind him with his six other daughters and his granddaughter as he had ordered. Lexi would be quick to follow, and would be even quicker to act, if need be.

Now was such a time when her skills, and her sisters’ skills, were needed. He had to get his family away before they were caught. The future of the world of the Guardian Warriors was at stake.

He scanned his employee ID badge quickly and was relieved that the massive steel door separating them from their means of escape clicked as the lock disengaged. At least their enemies had not discovered his intent yet. But it was only a matter of time.

“Daddy,” Lexi called to him quietly, coming up behind him and touching his arm gently. “No one has followed us. We have to hurry.”

Lucas looked back at his daughters with pride. His heart hurt as he realized that he would never see them again. Every one of them was a source of joy to him. Each of them was the very image of his wife—the love of his life. Even his granddaughter Hanna had his Elizabeth’s eyes—beautiful eyes that mirrored the kindness and the gentleness that each of them possessed.

He nodded just once and motioned for them to follow him as he quickly passed through the open doorway. They all followed. Silent. Cautious. He had trained them from the time they had been able to walk, how to be capable, agile fighters. They were his strength. They were his heart. He knew that they would survive even when he didn’t. It was meant to be. He knew this. His Elizabeth had seen it in her visions.

; Walking quickly along the path that that led to the loading bay, the women followed him. He stood tall and walked with quick, powerful strides to the small ship that they had been preparing for this day. It was only when all of them were safely up the entrance ramp and were inside the small spacecraft that he breathed a sigh of relief.

All seven girls looked toward him now. Bree, the second eldest, gently held her precious daughter within her arms as she slept peacefully against her shoulder. Hanna was a gift to them all. She was a beautiful child with a kind heart and a loving nature. Just the thought of not being around to see his grandchild grow and mature made his heart ache with the loss.

“We need to secure the hatch and leave,” Lexi told him quietly. She looked at her father and waited for him to give her the nod that she expected, giving her permission to finally take charge of their escape mission.

Lucas ran his fingers through his curly black hair then rubbed his eyes tiredly as he stepped back to stand in the open hatchway. He saw the pain in their eyes as they faced him.

“You know what to do, Lexi,” he told her quietly, nodding at her sisters and then returning his attention to his eldest daughter.

At thirty-four years old, Lexi had possessed a mature soul from the time she had been a child. Her sisters had always looked to her for guidance and protection. They also went to her for tenderness and love. Each of his girls possessed those same qualities, but Lexi was the one who bore the brunt of the responsibility, and Lucas was sorry for it. Despite the fact that each of his children were only one year apart and capable of fighting the battles before them, it was his eldest daughter who held the weight of the world on her shoulders.

“Don’t stop, no matter what. Maintain radio silence. There is no one who will be contacting you for any reason,” he told them, pulling himself from his thoughts.

“Daddy, you have to come with us,” Lexi told him with conviction.

She reached out to hug him to her tightly. She tucked her face into the crook of his neck and breathed in his scent as she had often done as a child, sighing softly when his powerful arms encircled her and hugged her tightly. She and her sisters were often the recipients of his hugs. For such a large and powerful man, he was truly gentleness personified.

She did her best to keep her emotions under control. She couldn’t cry. It would serve no purpose. It would only upset all of them.

“No, honey,” he told her quietly, rubbing her back soothingly. He looked over her shoulder to gaze at the rest of his daughters, seeing that their eyes held the same fear and the same pleading looks. “I have to stay behind to make sure that they can’t track you.”

“Daddy, please. We’ll be able to defend ourselves once we’ve left Earth’s atmosphere,” Lexi protested as she stepped out of his hold, determined to save all of them. They had to leave Brendan Port immediately. It was the only way to fulfill the destiny that their mother had foreseen in her vision.

“No, sweetheart,” Lucas said firmly. “Earth isn’t safe for any of us anymore. Those in charge will follow you and make an example of you when they catch you. I have to make sure that you girls are free.” He looked at his daughters and smiled sadly. It broke his heart to accept that this was the last time he would be with them in this life. “Contact Millie’s ship New Beginnings as soon as you land on Altavesta. She and her sister Nadine will be expecting your message.”

“We will,” Lexi promised, pulling herself together and standing strong.

She thought about the ship that their father had helped to supply and prepare for flight. He had used his position in the military to ensure that the most promising scientific team on Earth had been assigned to that ship under the guise that they would be an exploration vessel looking for a new world to claim in the name of the ruling factions of their world. Instead, New Beginnings was a ship that held the promise of their future.

They had launched a little more than five years before and, for a while, all of them had thought that the ship had been lost or destroyed. Contact with them had stopped only three weeks after their departure. It had only been five days ago that they had received a coded message from the ship, telling them that they had been helping another culture that they hadn’t known existed and would be continuing to the planet Altavesta. Lucas was hopeful that everything would go as planned, and the scientists would meet up with the Gallagher family before the people of that unfamiliar planet were even aware of their presence.

“Observe. Wait. If you can find Millie and her scientists, discuss the best way to approach the people of Altavesta,” Lucas said firmly, drawing Lexi’s attention. “Millie and her team will contact you once they land. It looks like you might make it there before they do, so you need to be cautious. Trust your gifts.”

He turned to face his second oldest daughter and was hit with a wave of sadness as he saw her standing there holding her baby daughter. That little girl had certainly captured his heart.

“Bree, I know you’ll be able to tell if the people of that world can be trusted. You need to search out the truth within their hearts. Lexi knows to look for the man that your mother saw in her visions. He is a good man who is in a position of power in that world. He’ll be able to help all of you. Make sure that you trust him before any of you reveal yourselves and tell him of your gifts.”

“I will, Daddy,” Bree promised him. It sometimes hurt to use her empathic ability, but she would never tell her father that. If she did, he would forbid her to use it. She wasn’t about to put her sisters or the scientists at risk by not ascertaining the honesty, the integrity, and the goodness of the people of the world that was going to hold unlimited possibilities for all of them.

“Your mother foresaw that Altavesta was the planet that would be safe for our family and the scientists. You have to escape the cruelty that our home has afforded each of us for so long,” Lucas said sadly as he thought of the love of his life. Elizabeth Gallagher had been adamant in her knowledge that Altavesta would be their new home. “She knew that you were meant to find your happiness there. She also knew that you would play an important role in the safety of that world. Remember your training. Trust your instincts. I have faith in all of you.”

“Daddy...” Bree began, her heart breaking at the pain and the loneliness within their father’s heart.

“Don’t worry about me, honey,” he stopped her. “I’ve had my time. Your mother gave me enough love and happiness to last me my lifetime.”

“You did the same for her, Daddy,” Evie said softly as she stepped forward and wrapped her arms around their father’s waist, laughing softly when she found herself being surrounded by the rest of her sisters. They needed to hug their father, too.

“I hope I did,” Lucas said gently. “Your mother deserved all the best in life.”

“Mom adored you,” Lexi said, smiling at the faraway look of love that appeared in her father’s gentle, brown eyes. “Whenever you walked into a room, Mom’s eyes sparkled.”

“You have to know that Mom loved you, Daddy,” Gaiya said, tugging on their father’s curly dark hair as she spoke.

  “I do,” Lucas whispered.

He looked at his daughters as they surrounded him and saw the result of his and Elizabeth’s love. They both had wanted a large family. The seven daughters that they had created together were beautiful babies who had grown to be beautiful women. Each and every one of them was good, smart, strong, honest, and kind. He hoped that they would be lucky enough to find their own destined mates one day. They each deserved a life of love. They all deserved to have their own families.

He just wished that things had been different. He wished that he and Elizabeth could have been together to share in their daughters’ futures. But, it wasn’t meant to be.

He cleared his throat, doing his best to keep himself in check. As each daughter kissed his cheek and hugged him tightly, he laughed softly. It seemed as if time had passed in a flash. They were no longer children, although they would always be his babies
.

Stepping back, he stood tall before them, knowing that they were depending on his strength to help them do what they had to do. They had to leave—without him.

He pulled off the bag that hung from his right shoulder. He offered it to his eldest daughter and smiled sadly when she refused to take it from him.

“Your destiny awaits you, girls. There are many worlds depending on all of you.”

“No pressure, Dad,” Bree said sarcastically, touching her daughter’s head gently as she stirred against her shoulder.

Lucas laughed despite his tension. He stepped forward and kissed Bree’s forehead quickly, bending down to kiss his beautiful baby granddaughter’s cheek as she slept. She was already as beautiful as her mother. Hanna was truly a gift that had been bestowed upon Bree despite the violence that she had experienced the night Hanna had been conceived.

Hanna was already stunning at eighteen months old. She had blonde hair so light it was almost white, just like his Elizabeth’s had been when she had been a child. Lucas knew that Hanna’s hair would darken as she got older, like her grandma’s. Their granddaughter was a loving baby. Hanna was also sweet, fun, and smart as a whip. He loved this little one so much.

He remembered sitting with Elizabeth in his arms and talking about their children. Elizabeth told him that their daughters and their granddaughter were destined for great things. They were going to be instrumental in helping to save many lives.

The rest of his daughters surrounded him again, hugging and receiving his kisses, each of them trying their best to stay strong as they knew they needed to be. It was difficult to stay behind. He had no choice, though. He had to ensure that they were able to leave Brendan Port safely.

“You are the most amazing children any father could ever have,” he told them, his voice soft as emotions overwhelmed him. “Your mother would have been so proud of you.”
