“Are you—”
Her phone rang. She pulled it from her pocket and looked at the screen and then looked back at me. The blank face was gone. Now she wore every expression at once. She put the phone to her ear.
“Special Agent Castle,” she said. It was maybe the third time I had heard her say it, and I liked the sound of it more every time.
Danielle listened. Then she nodded. Then she listened some more.
“Yes, sir,” she said. “Thank you, sir. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
She hung up and placed the phone on the table between us, and then took a sip of her drink. I waited. She might have been pausing for effect but I didn’t think so. That wasn’t really her style. She was thinking. About what she had heard or what she was going to say, I couldn’t be sure.
“That was the FDLE,” she said.
I nodded. I had gotten that far all by myself.
“I’ve been assigned.”
“Which office?”
She watched me as she spoke.
“The regional operations center in Miami.”
I smiled.
“What?” she said.
“See, I told you. It doesn’t matter what you do. You just can’t get away from old Miami.”

All errors are mine, up to and including sneaking a bottle of scotch onto a cruise ship. That’s trouble, right there.
