Harper padded over to a puddle of water nearby, knowing what she would see but wanting to verify all the same. A strong-looking bear with soft grey fur looked back at her, blinking quizzically.
So this was it then. Even in bear form, she retained some semblance of her mind, although the bear inside had taken precedence. Mother, mother, it called to her. Mate, cubs, protect. The little voice that Harper still retained marveled at the new image of her in the reflection, and realized that they had been right all along. All those times of feeling left out in her childhood, all the mysteries and secrets…they had led to this. And she had three amazing men (and bears) to share it with.
When she turned around, Bran, Aaron, and Jack were sitting around the fire again. They looked over at her and smiled, faces full of pride. “Come over here, lay next to us,” said Bran, motioning to her.
Still getting used to walking on all fours, Harper awkwardly walked over to where her three bears were sitting, enjoying the heat of the fire and the cool rush of the wind outside.
“You did it, Harper,” said Jack, running a soothing hand through her fur. “You shifted. Bet that’s the first time, huh?”
Harper nodded, her bear head bobbing up and down.
Aaron wrapped his arms around her as she lay down on her side. “The first time is the hardest, sweet. You’ll learn to control it in time.”
“There’s something we’ve been meaning to ask, though,” started Bran, clearing his throat a little uncomfortably. “With your…father gone, we are missing a member of our pack family. We were wondering…if you’d like to join us instead.”
Harper’s head shot up, ears perking at the sound. Even as a bear, she could understand what that meant. Could she do it? Leave everything behind and join them? She’d never felt so alive, so wanted, so belonging… And if this was truly her heritage, how could she resist?
From her father’s strange secrets to the eclectic collection of bear books to turning into a bear herself, it sure had been quite a ride. Harper blinked at them, her bear vision making them appear even more gorgeous than they already were. Mate, mate, cubs, pack. The bear’s needs were simple. It knew what it wanted. The human…not so much. It was a lot to take in at once…more than all three of the huge cocks she’d just had stuffed in her, Harper thought with a wry grin. But for the brief moment they’d been connected, she’d felt something she thought she’d never feel. A sense of belonging. A sense of purpose. And her bear -- yes, she was a bear! -- Was very clear in its intentions.
Mates. Three mates. Cubs. Family.
Seeing the three men surrounding her, petting her, holding her, she felt more cared for than she had in a long time. Despite whatever secrets her father had kept – and she was realizing there may have been many – perhaps being with these people could help her learn more about him, and by extension, about herself.
“I want to be part of your pack,” Harper said as she felt her body shrinking back to human size. The human Harper and the bear Harper were in agreement. “I want to learn more about…all of this. About my father. About you, as well.” She smiled at each of the men in turn, then she smirked. “But I’m still keeping the damn cabin!”
All four of them laughed, rolling over into a heap of tired flesh. Harper felt so protected here, and looking up into her three bears’ eyes, she hoped one day she would have the chance to repay them as well.

“Tonight, I’m going to lose it,” I said a little too loudly as I swayed with my drink at the bar. It was my twenty-first birthday, and I was tired of being a goody two shoes. I was here with my best friend Trina, I was at a bar in public for the first time, and I’d had more than a little liquid courage in my system. I was feeling bold, and I was determined not to end the night without a man in my bed. I gazed around the small but crowded bar for my options, smiling at a few over my cocktail.
“Hey, how about him?” Trina asked, tugging on my sleeve. She nodded in a direction to my left, and I saw a lone man standing over in a corner, his dark frame casting imposing shadows on the old wooden walls.
“Whoa, who’s that?” I asked, trying not to gape. He didn’t have a drink in his hand, or any food either. He seemed to be waiting for someone, or something. He had an awfully grumpy look on his face though, like someone had terribly wronged him. I couldn’t see much in the dim light of the bar, but he looked like a worthy candidate indeed.
“I don’t know,” said Trina, “But he looks new. And dangerous.” She said it without masking the excitement in her voice. We may have been young, but the “tough guy” look had always been attractive, and I had already started forming several possible backstories for him in my head.
Some would have said I have an overactive imagination, but I liked thinking about the people around me, where they could have come from, and why they were here tonight. I’d look upon complete strangers, making up whole histories for them. And this strange man we’d seen over in the corner was no different.
Who was he? My mind demanded to know. As I continued my curious gaze, he looked up, over toward the bar, and our eyes locked for a fraction of a second.
A strange shock I wasn’t used to flowed through me at our eye contact, and I was startled, setting my drink down with a clank and putting a hand to my head. It was strong, powerfully so, and uncomfortable. It was if a flash of adrenaline had rushed through my body in an instant at our eye contact, and I was beginning to feel a little nauseous.
“Lisa, what is it?” Trina asked me, snapping her fingers at me as I swayed uncomfortably. Okay, maybe it was just the drink getting to me.
“I’m fine,” I brushed her hand away, standing after a struggle as I looked left and right for the exit. “I’m just going to get some air, I’ll only be a moment.”
“You sure don’t look very good, can I come with you?”
“No, you can stay, don’t worry about me. I’ll be right outside. Besides, I think the guy a few tables over was checking you out.” I flashed the best smile I could muster and shuffled my way towards the door.
The night air was cold and welcome as I stepped out into the parking lot. Taking a few deep breaths, I placed my hands on my knees, waiting for the sick feeling to subside. I had had no idea what had happened back there, and I wasn’t sure I wanted to find out. Trina had said he seemed dangerous…and she could very well be right. Whatever had happened, it couldn’t be good.
I noticed after a time that I had been walking, pacing the parking lot and down the road as I tried to collect my thoughts. Looking back towards the bar, I didn’t realize how far I had drifted away. Shaking my head, I scolded myself for not paying enough attention. It was late, to be sure, but there was a full moon tonight, and it cast a cool glow on the road that made it seem not so scary.
Feeling a bit bad for leaving Trina back there, I started back towards the bar, h
ands wrapped around myself as I tried to keep warm. I’d told her I’d only be outside…
I realized how little I had clothing wise pretty quickly, and as the jolting shock faded from my system, I began to shiver with cold. I could see my breath in front of me in warm puffs, and it added a strange foggy haze in my field of vision.
As I walked back down the side of the road, I noticed it was littered with garbage and loose stones, making it difficult to keep my balance. I had to focus on my feet in front of me just as much as I did my destination, and I wasn’t quite sure if I was just hearing things when I heard the first shuffling of movement.
It came slow at first, like a small scratching you’d barely hear if it was silent. The mysterious sounds grew more distinct as I listened closer, and slowed my steps to a stop to listen fully. They were regular, rhythmic, and getting closer. Like footsteps.
My heart beating faster at that prospect, I reminded myself that the night was well lit and I was still very close to the bar. If anything was going to happen to me, it would happen in the middle of the woods someplace, or in a shadier part of town, right…?
The slow, crawling motion came closer, and I fought the urge to kick off my heels and high-tail it back to the bar. Maybe it was just an animal, I told myself, and I hoped I was right. When I heard the howl, I turned and ran.
I almost stumbled and fell as out of the woods in front of me tumbled a huge growling mess of fur and flesh, teeth gnashing and claws swinging as the animals tore into one another. In their haze, they’d fought their way right into my path, and I stopped dead, staring wide-eyed at them.
They were a frothing, undulating mass of hair and teeth and claw, and I wondered how on Earth these animals had come so close to me, fighting like this. I shuddered as I realized it could have been one of them following me. What was more bizarre though, was that animals around here usually stayed well away from humans. I’d seen enough carcasses on the side of the road to know that they’d probably learned their lesson by now. It seemed awfully…odd…for two (three? I couldn’t tell in the chaos) hulking mammals to have such an all out fight so close to a public area.
I wanted to just run back to the bar and back to Trina and safety and my cocktail, but something fascinated me about this strange coincidence. My heart beat hard in my chest, and the full moon shone down on us as I realized this was something very unusual indeed. These were wolves. Three of them in fact. And my area didn’t have wolves.
I stepped away slowly, panting a little as my body began to get worked up again. They’d stopped thrashing around enough to see a clear winner, and a bloody, panting heap of wolf lay on the pavement as the other two circled it, asserting their victory.
They must not have even noticed me watching them, because what happened next I could have never expected.
The sad lump of the defeated wolf began to spasm and move beneath its skin, hair and muscle contracting to show something different, more human underneath. I was scared as hell, but rooted to the spot as I watched the grisly transformation take place. Matter shifted and changed out of nowhere — which I should have known wasn’t possible, I was a scientist, after all — but when it completed, I stopped the scream in my throat just in time.
The bloody heap was the mysterious dark figure from the bar.
