After the war, he worked as a buffalo hunter and a guide through the rugged western territories. A writer named Ned Buntline wrote adventure stories about his life. Cody found his way into show business and became the star of his own stage show in 1883. It brought a theatrical version of life on the American frontier to audiences across the country.

One of the show’s big attractions was the young sharpshooter Annie Oakley. The Lakota Sioux leader Sitting Bull joined the show for a season in 1885, drawing even greater audiences. The show was wildly popular but not historically accurate, and it was criticized for misrepresenting the Native Americans who took part in it. Bill and his show traveled to England in 1887, where Queen Victoria was said to have enjoyed it. The tour continued in France, Italy, and other countries. People across Europe lined up to experience the romance and adventure of the Wild West—as Buffalo Bill Cody imagined it.

Whitney Sanderson has loved horses since she was a child, riding in a 4-H club and reading series like The Saddle Club and The Black Stallion. In addition to always having a horse or two in the backyard, she grew up surrounded by beautiful equine artwork created by her mother, Horse Diaries illustrator Ruth Sanderson. Whitney is the author of Horse Diaries #5: Golden Sun, Horse Diaries #10: Darcy, Horse Diaries #14: Calvino, and Horse Diaries #15: Lily, as well as another chapter book called Horse Rescue: Treasure.

Ruth Sanderson grew up with a love for horses. She has illustrated and retold many fairy tales and likes to feature horses in them whenever possible. Her book about a magical horse, The Golden Mare, the Firebird, and the Magic Ring, won the Texas Bluebonnet Award.

Ruth and her daughter have two horses, an Appaloosa named Thor and a quarter horse named Gabriel. She lives with her family in Massachusetts.
