Jake and his men were already at the tower with Maya when Duke and Tom showed up to hide and ambush Jake. There had been a fight. The men were disarmed and forced into the tower with Maya. One of the henchmen kept a gun on them the entire time. Duke had gotten hit with the weapon simply for looking away from the scene below them.
“Maya,” Cody said quietly when he made it up the stairs. “Why are you here? Why are you torturing yourself like this?”
“Why can’t I remember anything?” she cried. “It was the worst day of my life. I should remember every detail. But I don’t remember anything.”
Copy pulled Maya into his lap and let her cry as much as she needed to.
“What if I forget him too?” she cried. “What if I forget Troy?”
The name felt foreign on her tongue. It had been the first time she had said the name out loud since he left.
The others had stopped using his name as well. Of course, they all knew who they were talking about, but they thought not hearing his name would be a bit easier on her.
Finally, when Maya didn’t have any more tears to cry, she sat up, wiped her face, and ask, “What time is it?”
“Nearly seven,” Cody told her.
“I need to get to Chloe’s,” she said as she started to stand up. She never even considered that he had risked his job to check on her.
