Acknowledgments
So many people have helped me get this story on to the page and out into the world, not least my brilliant – and very special – agent, Heather Holden Brown. Thank you Heather and Elly James at HHB for all your support and encouragement always, I’m so grateful.
To Amanda Ridout, Sarah Ritherdon, Nia Benyon, Elly Foot and all at Team Boldwood, thank you so much for taking me into your family of authors and turning my fiction into reality. Sarah, you took the story and prodded it into shape so beautifully, thank you. It’s been a dream and I’m beyond thrilled to now be part of your Boldwood story. Thank you too to Alice Moore for your beautiful cover design and to Yvonne Holland, Camilla Lloyd and Sue Lamprell for your expertise, encouragement and eagle eyes.
I really hope to have written about adoption with care and understanding. I read so many incredible accounts (and watched hours of Long Lost Family!) but special thanks to Julia Feast OBE for not deleting my random email asking for advice. Your help was invaluable and much appreciated.
To all my wonderful friends who’ve supported me with this book, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Special thanks to Alie, Gemma, Claudia, Charlotte and Sara for reading early drafts and telling me what you really thought. And to the One Day Mores, the Six o’ Clockers, the Treble F and my brilliant Book Clubbers – thank you! I’m just sorry I’ve been talking about this for so long.
To my mother Christine and my sister Alex, the two funniest people I know: even though this story is completely made up, you were constantly in my thoughts. To my father Ken and stepmother Jo (sorry!) and to my wonderful in-laws Frank and Dru, I’m so lucky to have you all as my eternal cheerleaders. And to Tim, who might not technically be here any more – but is always with us – here’s to you, little brother. I miss you every day.
Then there’s my husband, Ross. (I think there’s something in my eye). Thank you for literally everything, from the cup of tea you bring me every morning to the constant encouragement to do what I love. I’m so happy I didn’t stop following you and, to paraphrase Elton, I love you more than life itself.
All love and quite possibly annoying hugs to my brilliant children – George, Xander and Alice – not least for making me understand what really matters in life. No, I don’t mean always having biscuits in the biscuit tin (although come to think of it that actually really does matter).
Thank you to all the readers of my wine blog, The Knackered Mother’s Wine Club, for your support over the last ten years. Promise to let me know what you think of this one (and what you’re drinking whilst reading it, obviously).
Finally I really hope that you’ve loved reading this book as much as I loved writing it. Thank you SO much, it means the world to me x
