Kevin peered upwards, his gaze sweeping the clouds as Sori's words sank in.

“She doesn’t put you in the category with other men. You mean something special to her. You represent something special to her. You represent that tiny bit of hope we all hold on to when we think something is impossible.”

He was the one with the keen senses, yet Sori had opened his mind.

A grateful smile danced across his face.

“I’m glad I have you to talk to. You always have the best advice, the best insight. Thank you.”

They expressed their good-byes and ended the call.

  Chapter 23

  Cherry Pie

Every time he looked at Yala, Kevin couldn’t help thinking about being with her. However, he gave himself a few points because he also thought about how much he truly loved and cared for her.

His gaze followed her to the sink, as she held a plate in her palm and spooned vanilla ice cream and pie into her mouth. They’d left the counter and sink a mess with dishes after they’d made one of her favorites—cherry pie. She did a little dance while eating, as if the pie provided a beat he couldn’t hear. Her carefree nature was not only a joy for him to watch, it had started to rub off on him. No matter how small, she took the time to enjoy life’s little pleasures.

After sitting his plate on the sink, he stood next to her.

“I was supposed to take that.”

He swiped a finger through her cherry filling and licked his lips at the sight of her lips wrapping around the finger he pushed into her tempting mouth. Her soft warm tongue cupped his finger as she sucked the cherry filling from it. The action sent sparks of desire all over his body.

The burn of nervous tension flooded Yala, but desire kept her in place, kept her curious. Kevin’s closeness had that effect on her.

What had he done to her?

Now, every time he touched her, her body sparked and awaited the rush that would ignite her.

Was he using his special ability to heighten her arousal? She believed him when he’d told her he never would, but nothing else explained her behavior with him.

His finger slide from her mouth. Her ability to think faded into the cloud of fog that had taken over her mind when he replaced his finger with his tongue.

Kevin backed away, determined to remain a gentleman. He wanted to allow Yala the opportunity to lead their intimacy.

Yala tried but failed to stop her body from moving. The incessant beat between her legs was driving her crazy.

“I assumed once we did it, the hormones would go away.”

Stroking her cheek, curiosity creased his face?

  “What do you mean?”

She couldn’t hide the desire in her eyes, and neither could he. She was forced to accept that her need for him had grown into something she could no longer control.

“I want to be with you again, but I don’t want you to think I’m some needy woman who can’t control her hormones.”

Her words were music to his ears. She had no idea that she was all he could think about.

“Yala, trust me on this. Knowing that you want me is the ultimate compliment.”

He drew her closer and kissed her into a boiling hot fever. They both overflowed with a mixture of lust and heated passion.

  He whispered against her ear.

“I don’t think I can get enough of you. I have taken two cold showers since last night and neither helped.”

His heated words drove her crazy. She lost her smile when he lifted her up and sat her atop the counter. Plates, dishes, and cups crashed to the floor and into the sink with loud clanks.

Neither seemed to hear, nor cared about the dishes.

Yala watched her shorts and panties slid off her legs, as she hastily attempted to undress Kevin. She’d managed to get the knot out of the string holding his sweats up. He helped, by pushing his pants down his thighs.

More dishes and silverware crashed to the floor, as Kevin traced fire-hot kisses along Yala’s neck. The hard tips of her breasts pressed against her top showing him how much he turned her on.

Each button he undid on her top enticed him to move faster. With no bra to restrict access, he left her top hanging open and her tits exposed for his viewing pleasure. His eyes feasted, as her perky mounds yielded to his soft squeezes. The vibrations from her deliciously erotic moans teased his senses. The view from where he stood was so pleasant, he couldn’t touch enough of her fast enough.

Yala had her reasons for being reluctant, but she’d never held such a fiery need in all her life. Kevin was proving to be an unstoppable force. He placed his hands around each of her thighs and dragged her closer to what she craved. He tugged so slowly, it made the anticipation of their impending connection unmerciful. Finally, her pulsing center pressed against his taut need, causing a whimper to escape her.

He handled her body without breaking their kiss. His slow penetration revealed how slippery wet she'd become as she fought to overcome the fiery need to rush the flow of his enticing entrance.

If there should have been pain, it never surfaced. She was too overwhelmed with hot lust to feel anything else. He deliberately thrusted into her at a lingering pace. Inch by agonizing inch, he pleased and sent her eyes rolling to the back of her head.

He positioned one of her legs so her calf sat atop his firm ass. He pushed against her inner thigh and spread the other leg open, wider. The action made him slide deeper. He hit a spot that sparked pain and ignited pleasure at the same time and caused her to bite into her lower lip to keep from yelling out.

“Are you okay?” he asked, worry shining in his concerned eyes.

She smiled through the sweet torture.

  “Yes. Please, don’t stop.”

Despite her plea, he stopped. He wanted her to control the flow, tempo, and depth.

Yala wanted this so badly, she moved rhythmically against him. Her body started a slow dance atop his hard penetration. He was so giving and she was so filled with need, she wanted all of him inside her. She wanted him to stroke every part down to the deepest depth. She hadn't lost control, she'd tossed it away willingly.

She slipped and slid atop spilled pie and ice cream and, surprisingly, enjoyed the stickiness. It added flavor to their sensually charged connection.

Kevin’s hands pressed firmly into her thighs, but he refused to move. He wanted her to continue to control the deep depth and juicy flow of the sweet tempo, wanted her to ride out her pleasure as fast or slow, as deep or shallow as she wanted.

Her rhythm mesmerized him. Each wave of her body fanned pleasure into his. The flow of their ecstasy was so satisfying, he feared he’d bruise her thighs with his tight grip.

Yala increased the intensity of her movement and spread her legs wider, sending him in so deep he couldn’t back out. A series of moans filled the air and her ears; she couldn’t tell if they were hers or his.

When he wrapped his hands around her dancing waist, melted ice cream and pieces of cherry filling made his hand slick and sticky against her warm soft skin.

Yala needed to find something to hold onto. She gripped the faucet handle with one hand and hung onto the edge of the cabinets with the other. She couldn’t stop her body as it danced an ocean-like wave against his body. Each wavy thrust made her hand inadvertently flip the water faucet on and off, on and off.

Kevin was buried so deep, there were no more in and out motions. Yala moved so that his rock hard gem stroked every pleasure point inside her. Her lower body no longer rested on the countertop; he now held her against him by the waist.

She spread her legs wider, as they danced at his sides. A spark of pleasure shot from her pelvis to her toes, rushed to her head, and finally zoomed back and forth like electric currents.

A glance at Kevin’s tightly shut eyes and his desire-fueled stance made her increase the rhythm.

Kevin didn’t know how much more he could take.

  “Yala, baby. Please.”

  He begged her
to release him because he was determined to not let go until she’d had enough. He relished the idea that she’d wanted this as badly as him.

Yala gorged herself on Kevin by hungrily taking every fulfilling inch. She recognized his dilemma the moment their eyes met. His strained moans and cries cast a tone that revealed his need to be released. She increased the pace of her sensual dance. It was that deep penetrating rhythm that sent her over the edge. She temporarily lost two senses—sight and hearing. She acknowledged only the pulsing flow that emanated from the connection between them.

She’d allowed a huge, hard object to be plugged into her outlet; now, so many currents traveled through her, she wasn’t sure she would survive. She’d surely traveled outside the sphere of life as she knew it. She heaved and fought for breaths, as her orgasm continued to push her outside the door of reality. She didn’t fight the rush. She enjoyed every splendid moment.

Kevin could hardly stand on his own two legs. He leaned slightly atop Yala to get his bearings. He came so hard, he saw those tiny pinpricks of light that bounced behind the eyelid right before losing consciousness. Only the realization that they were in danger of tumbling to the hardwood floor kept him on his feet.

The top of Yala’s body lay halfway in the sink, as cold water flowed over the top of her shoulder, waking her from the trance she’d been in. The weight of Kevin’s quivering body atop hers registered. His head lay atop her shoulder. She ran shaky fingers through his hair and watched him raise his handsome face. A brilliant smile greeted her.

She briefly acknowledged the mess they’d made. A saucer was wedged against her lower back and plates, glasses, and utensils were all over the floor. It appeared like they’d had a food fight.

Kevin handled her with care, as he lifted her from the countertop.

She hadn’t fully recovered as her body shook from the aftershock of their lovemaking.

With a firm grip, Kevin assisted her in sliding down his body while he slid, shakenly, from the inside of her.

“Sorry about your dishes,” he whispered

“What dishes?” she asked, as she set her gaze on his.

They both broke into laughter, as they glanced at the mess they’d made.

  Chapter 24

  Until I See You Again

The couple spent the following week in much the same manner. Kevin hadn’t seen the inside of the guest room since they spilled cherry pie all over the kitchen. Neither could get enough of the something they’d never had before.

The night before Yala’s departure to her assignment in New Orleans was especially emotional. Being who they were in the world of crime, they made useless attempts to hide their weakness for each other. Kevin relished the idea of seeing Yala in a few weeks since they'd both been reassigned to the Body Box case.

After a shower, Yala joined Kevin on her bed. She snuggled onto his side, and he automatically wrapped her in his waiting arms.

She blurted out, “You don’t have to leave just because I’m leaving tomorrow. You can stay as long as you like; and you’re welcome anytime, whether I’m here or not.”

“Thank you. I appreciate that...very much.”

He projected a calm tone, but his mind and body boomed with anticipation.

“I know that you’ve been with Top long enough to take care of yourself; but I would like to see you again, so please be careful.”

“Aren’t you tired of me yet?” she asked.

He captured her eyes with a penetrating gaze.

“No. I’ll never get tired of you. Honestly, I’ve never been this happy, and the idea of not seeing you again would probably break me.”

He hadn’t intended to be so serious, but Yala brought out a side of him he didn’t even know he possessed.

He felt her tense at his words, but she kept her head resting against his neck and shoulder. She stammered out her words.

“S…so, wh…what exactly is this? I mean, what’s going to become of us in the future? If I dare to say such a word.”

“I don’t know, but I can’t see one without you.”

Yala stared at him, wide-eyed and speechless.

He was finding that he enjoyed shocking her with his words.

“I know people like us don’t get involved, especially not with each other, for obvious reasons. From where I’m sitting, when it comes to me and you, we have crossed a line that can’t be uncrossed; and I don’t regret it one bit.”

Yala’s insides churned. She agreed but remained silent. Instead of rendering a comment, she increased the hold she had around his body.

  Kevin caught her subtle gesture.

“I’m having a hard time accepting the fact that you’re leaving me tomorrow. I’m tempted to kidnap you.”

“I must be special, if you’re willing to kidnap me.”

His heart pounded, but his voice broke through his emotions.

“I know we’re trained to ignore certain emotions and impulses; we’re trained to endure and forget, but when it comes to you…when it comes to you, I can’t turn myself off…it’s impossible. I have feelings for you I can’t even describe. I’m certain that no amount of training can make them go away.”

He sat up and gazed intently into her eyes, his long pause rattled her nerves, and her breathing became the only sound.

“Yala…I love you…I’m in love with you…and I can’t…I don’t want to turn this off. I don’t want to let you go, no matter what.”

Frozen in time, for a moment, she couldn’t speak or swallow or breathe. The L-word. She’d accepted as a young girl that she would never be loved. She’d been wrong, and love had finally found her. She realized the moment Kevin expressed the words, he truly meant them.

She threw caution to the wind, stared into his eyes, and expressed words she never expected to say to anyone.

  “I love you, too.”

The kiss that followed was filled to the brim with overpowering emotions that rendered them immobile. They held each other, until a calming peace settled and lulled them to sleep.

Hours later, Kevin reached for Yala, but the emptiness he touched communicated that she was already gone. He took a deep breath and cursed the barren state she left him in. In a way, he was glad she left the way she had. He may have been tempted to follow her, assignment be damned.

He reached over to the nightstand for water and found a note, sitting next to the bottle. Under the note was a key.

  The note read:

Here’s the key to my house. It represents more than giving you an easier way into my home. It means you’ll always be welcome, and you will always have a place here.

I’ll miss you. Take care. Until I see you again.

  Chapter 25

  The Tattoo

Back in California, Kevin tracked information and new leads on the Truleta Cartel. It seemed like the TC was all he’d been tracking, for over a year. He also tracked information for his cousin, Devin.

The last time he’d been in California, he’d found his cousin married. Devin was the last person he’d expected to get married, but after Devin had called with concerns about his quickie marriage and his new wife, Kevin paid attention to his cousin's concerns.

Apparently, his uncle had saddled Devin with marriage for the sake of his political career. Devin's playboy ways outshined his father's political accomplishments and the family had taken a drastic step. They'd arranged his cousin's marriage to a woman they’d deemed socially acceptable and fit for a political life.

The more Kevin dug into his cousin’s concerns, the more it seemed his cousin and his new wife, Alana, may have been in the path of the same cartel he’d been tasked to find leads on.

Kevin sat in the backseat of an old green jalopy that would serve as their meeting place. He awaited the arrival of Devin and Alana, to provide them a second update on the intel he’d gathered on their situation, so far. While waiting, he received an urgent text from Sori, requesting he call her immediately.

  He kept the meeting
brief, giving Devin and Alana the most important of the information he had for them.

His new cousin-in-law, Alana, possessed a radiant beauty that was hard to ignore. Upon first meeting Alana, Kevin didn’t need his gift to know that his cousin was in trouble. Although Devin tried to hide it, arranged marriage or not, he had fallen for his wife. Kevin could tell at a glance that Alana was putting his arrogant cousin through his paces. His eyes never strayed too far away from her, and he touched her every chance he got. The funniest thing about their situation was that Alana didn’t seem all that taken with his cousin or his affections.

Kevin observed them for an amused moment longer before expressing his good-bye. He left them to ponder the information he’d given them.

Zipping past people with a wide brisk stride, Kevin moved through the streets with a sense of purpose. The text he’d received from Sori had his mind spinning. If she called something urgent, it was likely earth-shattering. He disappeared into the nearest alley and made the call.

Sori answered on the first ring and confirmed it was him before she started.

“Kay. You worked a case a while back, body parts being delivered in three separate parts and in boxes. I remember you briefly telling me about it.”

Kevin sighed. He and Yala would be back on the case in less than a week. He’d periodically checked in with Dr. Hughes over the past months for updates and, thankfully, the doctor hadn’t received another box.

At first, Kevin wasn’t convinced the case was solved, but the suspects in custody had never given up a third accomplice. Sori asking about the case could only mean that Doctor Hughes had likely received another box.

Now, Kevin’s nerves were on high alert.

“Yes, I worked the case with Yala. Strangest, most bizarre case I ever worked—even for me. Yala and I have been reassigned to the case.”

Sori's silence registered like spoken words.
