Epilogue
Andrew held Eden’s hand and repeated his vows before a minister in Denver. He kissed her tenderly and chastely when the minister had instructed him to. He’d save the passion for later that evening, in his hotel room.
He looked down at Eden. Her blue eyes sparkled with a mixture of joy and emotional tears.
Andrew thanked the minister, slipped him a few dollars, and led his wife out of the church and to his hotel.
“We’ll spend the night here and catch a train back to Hays tomorrow,” he said. “I want us to be married again, in Hays.”
“Why?” she asked.
“I want Martin to marry us, and I want my mother there to see it. Do you mind?”
“Not at all.” She sobered. “But we’ll still have our wedding night, right?”
“In just minutes from now you’ll be Mrs. Mayfield, in every sense of the word. I wouldn’t postpone that for the world.”
All the way from Denver to Hays, Eden rested her sleepy head on her husband’s shoulder. They hadn’t gotten much sleep the night before, but they were more content than ever.
When they arrived in Hays, they were surprised to discover that Catherine and Martin had also planned to marry.
Andrew and Eden were relieved and happy for them.
The happiest of all was Addie, who seemed to be walking on a cloud. Sam was going to make her a grandmother, Martin was marrying Catherine, and Eden, whom she’d grown to love, was happily married to Andrew.
Addie sat back in her porch rocker and said out loud, "My work here is done," though no one was there to hear her.
