Alexa brushed the tears that streamed down her face away, holding Brendan’s hand tightly in her own. “Thank you. Thank you.”
The goddess straightened. “It was your own strength that defined you. You did what you were always meant to do. This was the moment your powers were meant to come to life. Now look to the future. Never look back.” She blew Alexa a soft kiss, then exploded into a rush of rain that hit the pavement without a sound.
Alexa looked down at the man in her arms, who was just starting to come back to himself. “I love you.”
The confusion in his face fled. “I love you too.”
She stroked his hair, glorying in the sight of him. In the knowledge that everything keeping them apart was gone. And that their future was filled with joy.
“How would you feel about being the Lord of Darkmore?”
The corners of his mouth lifted into a brilliant smile. “You can call this poor alien hybrid shifter anything you want, as long as you call me yours.” But then, his smile faltered. “There was a ship, hunting the aliens, I think it might—”
“It came, but left when it found you dead.”
The worry instantly left his face. “I wondered if it might see an alien hybrid as one of them. I guess I was lucky they didn’t get their hands on me.”
She grinned. “So, the aliens are gone. Humanity is safe. And Draven’s been defeated. I think this might just be our happily ever after.”
He stroked her cheek. “And we have each other.”
“The best part of all.”
They kissed, there in the rain, knowing that nothing could ever keep them apart again.
Chapter Fifteen
The laboratory had been silent in a way Isabel had never heard before. With the last of the human experiments dead, she had grown accustomed to the heavy bootfalls of the alien guards as they paced back and forth down the hall lined with cells.
But there was no other sound.
Her lips curled in bitter anger. Perhaps they’ve grown bored with watching their little experiment’s every move. With watching their miraculous hybrid.
The creatures had even forgotten to serve her daily meal. Something is going on.
A feeling she couldn’t quite place made the hairs on her body stand on end. Uncurling from a ball of limbs, she stood, even though her long auburn hair did little to conceal her naked body. She had been waiting for the perfect time to attempt an escape.
There may be no better time than this.
Pulling the pin from her hair, she moved to the bars of her cell and looked out. It was still empty. Eerily silent. Reaching through, she stuck the pin in the strange keyhole. For an hour she moved it with skilled practice. She’d opened many locks in her life, but this one was far more complicated.
At last, the door made a soft sound and swung slightly open.
Pulling her arm free, she opened the door wider, wincing as it squealed slightly. Padding down the hall on bare feet, she made her way through door after door of the underground facility until she made it to the top.
For the first time in years, she breathed in the scents of the woods. A soft rain fell from above, and she tilted her head up, to let the cool drops fall on her face. Tears stung her eyes. I’m free. I’m actually free.
“What the hell—?”
Her head jerked to the side, staring at her two guards.
Without hesitation, she turned and ran. Twigs and rocks sliced her feet as she pounded through the woods, but she didn’t slow. She could hear them, right behind her, gaining on her. The alien shifters would switch form, but she didn’t have the time to do the same.
As she broke free from the tree line, she slid to a halt as she nearly crashed over the edge of a fifty-foot cliff. Her heart was in her throat. Her pulse filled her ears. I nearly died! After finally gaining my freedom! She turned to find another escape.
But the two alien shifters stalked out of the woods in their wolf form. Their yellow gazes locked on her as they growled, flashing rows of sharp teeth.
No! Damn it! No!
I won’t go back. Nothing would be worse.
She looked back at the cliff, the muscles in her legs bunching.
And then, a bright light spilled over the aliens, encasing them in a blue glow. She looked up, and her jaw dropped. A spaceship? One second the wolves were whimpering, the next they were gone.
Her instincts were driving her mad. Jump? Face the spaceship? What should she do?
And then, the light moved toward her.
I won’t be an experiment again. No matter the price I have to pay. Tears pricked her eyes as she realized her only choice.
Turning, she jumped, plummeting toward certain death.
And yet, just as the Fates had other plans for Brendan and Alexa, they had other plans for Isabel too. This was not the end of her story.
Not even close.
