  SHE MEANT:

  dim adj. describes a sort of people and lighting that flatter you but then leave you with a headache.

  HE MEANT:

  direct adj. outright, explicit, dull.

  HE MEANT:

  discipline n. the ability to ignore distractions and press on. Easier to achieve if your mind is limited and you don’t notice the distractions in the first place.

  dishonesty n. the telling of partial truths in order to avoid hurting others.

  SHE MEANT:

  emoticon n. sideways smiley faces that indicate tone on the Internet. Bubbles told Steve he was no good at cybersex, and followed the statement with the happy emoticon :-) so he could tell she was just kidding.

  HE MEANT:

  emoticon n. a method of expressing emotion without moving a facial muscle or saying word one. Steve had never seen an emoticon, didn’t understand it, and felt insulted.

  SHE MEANT:

  empathy n. walking in the shoes of others, feeling all their problems as keenly as if they were yours. A female specialty. Our own problems just aren’t enough for us.

  empathy n. acknowledging another’s pain. Steve, looking for empathy, explained to Tim how insulted he had felt. “It sucks to be you,” said Tim.

  SHE MEANT:

  empire 1. n. an extensive kingdom with lots of zip codes and subjugation. 2. adj. refers to a vague waistline popular in the reign of the Empress Josephine, now particularly useful for pregnant brides.

  HE MEANT:

  empire n. a type of government acceptable only when it is ancient or privately owned.

  SHE MEANT:

  employee n. someone who gets blamed for your worst mistakes.

  HE MEANT:

  employee n. someone who understands that the boss wants suggestions to improve the company, not her personality.

  SHE MEANT:

  exaggeration n. a pastime invented by early hunters in their description of the woolly mammoth that got away. Since then, men have exaggerated the size and scope of most everything around them, with few repercussions and a surprising amount of succe
ss. Women are less prone to exaggerate, since we are more adoring of the accurate transmission of lovable details.

  HE MEANT:

  exaggeration n. act of overstating the truth, as when trying to convince a dating prospect or a game warden that an entity is twelve inches long.

  SHE MEANT:

  exercise n. 1. an activity intended to make you a few sizes smaller. 2. any ritualized process without hope. An exercise in futility.

  HE MEANT:

  exercise n. 1. an activity intended to make you a few sizes bigger. 2. an activity intended to help others feel a few sizes smaller.

  SHE MEANT:

  exhibitionist n. a person who feels that clothes get in the way of things. Easy to find on beaches, on the stages of certain theaters, and in health clubs. It’s hard to say whether the workout craze created more exhibitionists or simply got them all together in the same place, but this way it’s more convenient for everyone involved.

  HE MEANT:

  exhibitionist n. someone who shows parts of him- or herself to people who don’t want to see them. If people want to see them, the exhibitor is known as a “model.”

  SHE MEANT:

  exotic adj. describes a type of vacation.

  HE MEANT:
