Cheyenne and Jason (Last Chance Program Book 1) Page 16

by Malone, Misty

She reached up and gave him a much better kiss. “Thank you,” she said before doing as he’d suggested.

He watched her heading for the bathroom and was glad he’d been early this morning. He’d anticipated a problem with her nerves, and was glad he’d been able to help. The fact that she allowed him to help her in that way without having a fit, and how much it had calmed her and how quickly, all told him her feelings for him were very real, and she trusted him. That was a gift he cherished and would never abuse.

He was with her for her meeting, but said very little after the introductions. He stood back and watched her wow him with her work, her ideas, and her charm. When they left almost two hours later, she had a contract in hand that Jason was sure would surprise Dan.

As they were driving to her office to see Dan, he could tell she was happy. “You know Dan’s going to be quite surprised, don’t you?”

  “Do you think?”

“No doubt in my mind. You did really well, Cheyenne, but I think you know that. How do you feel?”

“Happy. Proud. More confident than I’ve ever felt.” She looked at him. “I can do this, can’t I?”

He chuckled, but she could tell he was completely serious when he answered. “Yes, you can. I’m glad you see that now, too.”

“It's just like you told me it would be. Feeling proud of myself is a good feeling.”

“It makes you want to feel that way more often, doesn't it?”

“Yes.” She thought a couple moments. “Now that I see how good it feels, it might work just as well as spankings, huh?”

“Maybe even more so. Having pride in yourself is a good feeling that will stay with you through life. A sore bottom is a bad feeling that only stays with you a short while.”

Her mischievous smile was back when she looked at him again. “You're right. They're hardly worth doing any more, huh? You may as well just stop them altogether.”

They enjoyed a good laugh together as he pulled into her office parking lot. “Nice try, brat, but they have their advantages, too. Watch yourself with your coworkers here or I'll be reminding you just how effective they can be to get my point across.”

  “I hear you,” she promised.

They greeted coworkers at her office as they made their way to Jenna’s desk. “Good morning, Jenna,” she said with a big smile. "It’s gorgeous out today, isn’t it?”

“It certainly is,” Jenna agreed. “Mr. Miller has been waiting anxiously for you all morning. I’ll tell him you’re here. Would you like any coffee or anything else to drink?”

“I’m fine,” she answered, but looked at Jason.

“Nothing for me, either, Jenna, but thank you.”

They sat down on the couch, and Jason thought back to the change in Cheyenne since the first time they greeted Jenna and waited to meet with Dan. What a change!

“What’s the smile for?” Cheyenne asked.

“I was thinking back to the first time we were here, waiting to see Dan.”

She blushed, but had a pretty little impish grin. “If you’re thinking about the awful way I behaved that day, remember, no swearing!”

He chuckled and leaned over to whisper, “You were almost enough to make me swear that day.”

“I don’t doubt that,” she said, turning more serious. “I’m so embarrassed when I think back to how I used to be.”

“Don’t be embarrassed about how you were; be proud of who you are now.”

She looked over at him with appreciation in her eyes and a smile on her face.

Dan came out of his office at that moment, which ended their conversation. “Please, come in. I’ve been waiting for you.”

“You mean you’ve been worrying about me, don’t you?” Cheyenne said. Jason was concerned until he looked over and saw the smile on her face. “I don’t blame you, Dan. I would have been, too.”

“So how did it go? How long are you going to keep me in suspense? I know he liked the small things you did. Did he give you a contract for some real work, or more small stuff?”

“I did get a contract,” she said. “You tell me what you think.”

She pushed the contract over to him, and he started reading it. At one point he looked up at her and smiled. When he finished he got up and went to her, taking her hand and pulling her up out of her chair. “Congratulations, Cheyenne,” he said as he gave her a little hug.

Jason stood, as well, and cleared his throat. “Mr. Miller, most employers shake their employee’s hand for a job well done at work.” He was smiling as he said it, though, which negated any concern he may have hoped to instill in him.

“That had nothing to do with work,” Dan said openly, with a bit of a smirk. “He called me right after you left his office this morning, Cheyenne, to tell me how much he enjoyed meeting you and was looking forward to working with you. That, together with all the comments I’ve heard from the others working here, and the updates I’ve been receiving from Jason, and the big smile I’ve seen you wearing the last few times you’ve been in here all tell me you’re a new person, and happier.”

“I really am, Dan. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to do this program.”

Dan laughed. “For giving you the opportunity? Opportunity, ultimatum, threat, whatever you want to call it.” They all three laughed. “I know it took a lot of guts to agree to it, because it was your choice, and it took a lot of hard work. I’m glad you did it, though. It’s good to see you smiling. It’s good to have you working for me, too. I never had a doubt you could bring in contracts like this with the quality of work you do, if we could just get past—”

  “The rotten attitude?” she suggested.

Both men chuckled once more. “I’ll repeat, whatever you want to call it,” Dan said. He sat back down and encouraged both of them to, as well. “Seriously, Cheyenne, congratulations, both on the program and on this contract. You did really well, and I thank you. Are you ready to start on the work for him right away?”

“I am unless you have something else you want me to do first.”

They talked and made their plans before Dan shook both their hands. “Jason, once again, I don’t know how to thank you. As far as I’m concerned you performed a miracle with my sister, and now you’ve done it again.”

“No thanks necessary, Dan. Seeing this lovely little lady so happy is all the thanks I need.” She stood on her toes to kiss Jason’s cheek. He smiled and said, “Things like that are a wonderful bonus.”

Once they were in the car again, Jason turned to her. “Well, pretty lady, that definitely deserves lunch out. Where would you like to go?”

She thought a moment, and became excited. “This is a day to think back,” she said. “You were thinking back to the first time we went to talk to Dan, and how horrible I was then. Do you remember the first time you asked where I wanted to go eat?”

He nodded, but before he could say anything she continued, beaming ear to ear. “Once again, there’s a big change. This time I can honestly tell you, if it’s okay with you I’d like to go to my favorite restaurant.”

“I’m glad to hear you have one now,” he said. “Which one is it?”

“The one you took me to first,” she said.

“I think that’s my favorite one, too,” he said as he started the car.

While they were eating their lunch she said, “This is my favorite restaurant for lunch. I think my favorite for dinner would be The Skylight.”

“Again, I think I’d agree. It would have to be either The Skylight or Brookside.”

“Ooh, I like that one, too. I forgot about it.”

“We’ll visit them all three often once I move here.”

She got quiet again, and he was a little concerned. “What’s on your mind, Cheyenne?”

“I’m still just trying to believe it. So you really will move here?”

“Assuming you want to stay here, yes, I will. I’ll find a house to buy, one that you like, too, so we can share it once we’re ma
rried. I’ll bring my boat so we can go out on the dam fishing, and we’ll get to know each other better. Once I feel we’ve done that I’ll get down on one knee and propose to you, and you can start planning a wedding. I’ll give you a good spanking or two during the planning process when you get flustered or overwhelmed and turn into Bridezilla and have a temper tantrum. The spankings will settle you right down, and the wedding will be beautiful.”

Cheyenne was giggling, but he continued. “You'll be the head of your department by then and will have lots of friends at work, all of whom will be there to watch you become Mrs. Jason Jenkins.”

She reached up and gave him a quick kiss on his cheek, which he returned before going on. “We’ll then move you into the aforementioned house we picked out together, and we’ll live happily ever after, along with our three kids who will make you want to pull your hair out from time to time. But not to worry, another good spanking mixed in here and there will calm you right back down and you’ll be a wonderful mother.”

Cheyenne was laughing by this time, but she was able to look into his eyes and see the love there. “That sounds wonderful,” she assured him.
