“What’s that you said?” a man’s voice called from behind the curtain and startled her. She recovered in time to flash a smile at Perry’s dripping face, his blue eyes drinking her in.
“I’m hungry,” she said, still trying to cover her inadvertence. “You want to go get lunch?”
“Is it that late?”
“Shit, it’s cold,” she squawked when she felt the water on her shoulders. “What the hell is with you guys. This isn’t an FOB, you know. We have hot water back here in civilization.”
“There isn’t any. I tried.”
Emily reached behind her to adjust the taps so they wouldn’t be scalded once the heater had done its work. Then she reached up behind his head and kissed him, and leaned into his broad shoulders and strong arms, which provided more than enough support to allow her to hang from his lips for a long moment.
“Do you think anyone heard us?” He gestured to the vent in the ceiling.
“Don’t worry,” she whispered, and then giggled. “Mrs. Gao doesn’t hear very well, and she doesn’t speak English.”
Later, while getting dressed, she watched as Perry pulled on his clothes. He was at least as handsome as Wu Dao, and a good deal more responsible. This was the better bargain, she concluded, before this train of thought could carry her very far into dangerous speculations. “He can be counted on to take care of my children,” she muttered, too quietly for him to hear. “That is, if I ever decide to have any, and if I’m gone, he’ll protect them with his life… and Connie will have his back.”
