‘You have got to get Linda off the air, pleading for me,’ Luc continued when the truck was a distant rumble. ‘You’ve got to get everyone to stop with the social media, the police to stop showing my picture, the news teams to quit with their updates. You’re gonna—’ another truck sounding its horn cut off what his friend was trying to say. Definitely a truck stop. Somewhere busy. And what state was that area code?
‘Luc what exactly is going on?’
‘There’s a reason I ran, I can’t say what it is, I can’t give you details or you’ll be targeted and you’ve got Tyler to think about. I haven’t done anything wrong, but I saw something—someone—I shouldn’t have.’
‘Luc if you’re in trouble, the police are the best people to protect you!’
‘Not from this, Marc. No one can protect me from this better than what I’m doing right now. That whole hotel thing—that’s to do with this.’
‘Your one-to-one?’
‘That was the start. I can’t say anything more. Listen I’m off grid on purpose. I don’t know how long, but I know you’ll listen and get this message across. Stop with the reports. If they don’t stop, they’ll get us killed—’
‘Us?’ Marc asked writing that titbit down. So he was definitely with someone—was it still the woman? ‘Who’s with you?’
‘Shit. No one.’ Luc sighed down the line and Marc was sure he could hear someone calling to Luc. It sounded like a woman, but the noise of the traffic made it difficult to tell. ‘Look, tell them I’ve run off. I’m having an affair. I got fed up of Linda’s abu—’ Marc frowned as his friend cut himself off.
‘Linda’s what?’
‘Look, just get them to stop. You’re my best friend, Marc, please do this for me.’
‘I- Luc…’ Marc was at a loss.
‘Please!’
‘If you’re sure, Luc—’
‘Thank you! Fuck, I am so sorry. I don’t know how long I’ll be gone, I don’t mean to let you down like this, but you take care of yourself and the kid, okay? Keep him safe and make sure he remembers me for when I get back.’
Marc could hear Ellie talking in the background as he tried to process what his friend was saying. How much it sounded like a final goodbye.
‘Luc, you’re always welcome here. No matter how long you’re gone. No matter what you’ve done or who’s after you.’
‘Thanks, Marc. You know if I could I’d be there with you guys, but not with the kid. I’ll see you around.’ And before Marc could reply, the line went dead.
He looked down at the now silent phone and jotted down the number. He also noted that twice Luc had referred to Tyler as a reason for not coming to him. The police would definitely want to know about that. But he would do as his friend asked; get his Destiny stars to stop, get the police to quieten their investigation, and somehow get Linda on board. But Luc’s own words made Marc worry all the more—his friend was in trouble and he’d do anything he could to help him.
He turned around to face Ellie as she spoke to whoever she had called. She smiled reassuringly at him, reaching out her arm.
He climbed on the bed from the bottom and made his way towards her. His life was never going to be the same again after his week at the convention; while he knew—from Luc’s call—that part of it wouldn’t be pleasant, just looking at Ellie told him this new start would be one of the best things ever to happen to him.
