“I see,” Julie said. But I suspected the only thing she saw was red.
Chapter Thirty-eight
“Isn’t Bernie a beautiful bride?”
“Aren’t all brides beautiful?” Charlie asked, but he wasn’t looking at Bernie. He was looking at me. It had been a full nine months since he’d proposed in my cube at Reynolds, and I’d said yes, but I still couldn’t get over the fact he was mine. We’d gotten married three months later at an ancient church in London the Solanger family made hefty contributions to on a regular basis.
“No, not all brides,” I said. “The bride of Frankenstein was ugly.”
“There’s only one bride I’m dreaming about, and she walked down the aisle and into my arms months ago.”
“Shh. It’s bad luck to talk about another bride at Bernie’s wedding.”
“Since when?”
“Since now. George is about to kiss her.”
“Yeah, for the umpteenth time. C’mon, darling. Dance with me?”
He smiled at me, his eyes creased at the corners and laughter in their shadowy depths. Would I ever get use to the trembles he sent through my body with a single look? His eyes promised a dance now and another more intimate one later.
I shivered as Charlie took my hand and pulled me onto the shiny dance floor, and I felt the eyes of every female in the building on us. Another sensation I had to get used to. Charlie could not help the charm he oozed from his pores.
Charming Charlie’s eyes locked with mine and his hands were around my waist, pulling me close, and I could feel the beating of his heart in rhythm with the music. Bernie and George had hired a live band for the wedding, and the sound of the lead singer, accompanied by a saxophone, classical guitar, and booming bass playing the Etta James song “At Last,” felt like our theme song.
“At last, my love has come along, my lonely days are over, and life is like a song,” sang the woman, her emotion-laden voice expressing the deep gratefulness in my heart. I placed my head against the safe haven of Charlie’s chest and breathed in his unique scent. “I found a thrill to press my cheek to, a thrill that I have never known,” she crooned.
How could a song perfectly express all my tumultuous feelings? Tears of joy and gratitude filled me. Charlie leaned down and placed a soft kiss on my head. He sang along, his clear tenor making me smile. “You smiled, you smiled, oh and then the spell was cast, and here we are in heaven for you are mine…at last.”
