Her smile did something to his insides; a feeling rushed through him that his matrix couldn’t process. She nodded and came a step closer. “I think it will help everyone. I’ll stay here and see if I can find some bandages to help with Tara’s blaster burn until the doctor arrives.”

“We won’t be long.” He was relieved that Mags didn’t want to come with them. While he knew there was nothing Rennick could do to hurt her, he didn’t want to wave his mate under that killer’s nose either.

They parted ways as Mags entered the medical room and he stepped inside the transportation tube. “We’ll go to his cell. You can see each other and reassure him that you’re fine. Then we leave.”

Tara nodded before a grimace contorted her face. “That’s all I need.”

No doubt, that was all the energy she had left in her; the woman was in obvious pain and needed medical attention. The trip down to the lowest level of the prison took the same amount of time it always did, and yet it felt as though it stretched on for an eternity. Tara’s pain increased and Zee had to gently adjust his hold on her, not wanting to hurt her more.

When the doors slid open and revealed the long corridor, Zee hesitated. There were no sounds coming from Rennick’s cell, nor did he reach out to Zee through their cybernetic link. Stepping out, Zee steeled his resolve and prepared to come face-to-face with Rennick for the first time in decades.

Tara’s body had also gone stiff, though he wasn’t certain if it was from pain, or simply from not knowing how she’d react to meeting Rennick. Zee increased the hold on her body. “He can’t hurt you. I won’t let him.”

  “He wouldn’t.”

“I thought that once. He shot me in the head.” Zee became suddenly aware of the skin around the cybernetic implant in his head. “I will only allow this meeting to happen for a few minutes. No longer.” Anticipation rolled through Zee’s body as he took the final step in front of the energy shield that stood between Rennick and the rest of the world.

Rennick stood in the middle of the cell, his glowing gray eyes wide, his shoulder length black hair parted oddly, as though he’d been running his hands through it moments before. Rennick’s body was exactly as it had been the last time Zee had seen him; not as broad as Zee’s, but just as muscular. Rennick’s left arm and part of his chest had been enhanced, giving him exceptional aiming abilities on the battlefield.

Normally, Rennick would have taken this opportunity to torment Zee, to badger him about why he hadn’t come to face him before now. To complain about his living conditions or make demands he knew Zee would never agree to. But this time, Rennick only had eyes for the woman Zee currently held in his arms.

“You’re hurt.” Rennick’s voice was low and deceptively soft. “Why didn’t you take her for help?”

“I asked him to bring me here.” Tara tried to turn in Zee’s arms but lacked the strength to do more than wince. “I know you needed to see me. I’m here.”

Rennick cocked his head to the side, his gaze never leaving Tara’s body. “If anything happens to her, I’ll tear this place apart.”

That was the Rennick Zee had expected to face, even if his words lacked some of their normal bite. “She’s under my protection.”

“That doesn’t mean much, does it.” Rennick’s gaze flicked up to meet Zee’s. “She’s injured.”

“She’ll be fixed shortly.” Zee knew Mags would have everything they’d need to get Tara stable by the time they returned to medical. “You’ve seen her. We’re leaving.”

Zee turned without waiting for Rennick’s response. Tara leaned her head against his shoulder, finally relaxing. “Thank you.”

“If anything happens to her, Zee! I’ll fraking blow the other half of your face off!”

Rennick’s words didn’t match the brush of relief Zee felt through the cybernetic link. The knowledge that Rennick had been scared for her wellbeing was something Zee wasn’t prepared to process. No, right now he needed to get Tara back to medical, pull Mags into his arms and be thankful that everything had turned out for the best.

  Epilogue

Mags had stepped to the side once Hallam and Aerin arrived from the medical facility, letting the doctor take over Tara’s care. While she was more than familiar with human physiology and had been able to help make Tara comfortable, Mags lacked understanding of cyborg and Grus medical technology. She’d ask Zee to arrange for her to get some training from Hallam over the next little while, and then maybe she’d be able to work at the prison. Clearly, they were going to need someone here that could address injuries when they occurred, rather than sending for help from Hallam every time.

The stress of everything that had happened over the past day had taken its toll on her, and she was ready to retreat with Zee into his quarters and not come out for days. Not that there was any chance that would happen, but a girl could dream. Instead, she waited around while he spoke with Hallam, made arrangements with his guards regarding her presence and security clearance, and ensured that Tara would be cared for here at the prison while she recovered. Mags wasn’t surprised that Zee didn’t want to move Tara too far away from Rennick, even if she knew he still didn’t trust him. The connection between cyborgs and their mates was too powerful to mess with.

Mags enjoyed that connection, even if she felt as though there was a part of her that was no longer her own.

Zee looked over at her from across the room and frowned.

God, she wasn’t going to get used to him picking up on her emotions. She waved him away, stepping out into the corridor to temporarily escape the noise in medical. The air was cooler from the lack of bodies that had congregated in the enclosed space, making it easier for her to breathe. She leaned against the wall, closed her eyes and let some of the tension she’d been holding slip away. So much had happened to her in such a relatively short period of time, her brain had simply given up trying to process it all.

The first trickle of tears that rolled down her cheek caught her off guard. Mags normally had a tight control over her emotions when it came to crisis situations, but once the stress of the moment was gone, she often found herself fall into a funk until she was able to do something to shake the dread away.

  But she rarely cried.

Instead of worrying about them, she let them flow, relishing the acceptance of the fear, concern, and excitement of realizing that her life would never be the same again. She’d left Earth and would never be able to return. She’d begun a new existence on an alien planet with a man who would do anything for her; with a man who loved her unconditionally.

That in itself was something she’d have to get used to.

  “Do you need time alone?”

The sound of Zee’s rich voice sent a shiver of anticipation through her body. Opening her eyes, she smiled at the sight of him standing in the doorway, his arms crossed and his stance wide. He looked as though he was about to break out into a run.

Mags shook her head. “I’m okay. Everything just kind of hit me all at once.”

Zee came to her and brushed her tears away with the fleshy part of his hand. Her gaze slipped to his cybernetic implants that made up part of his skull and gave herself permission to stare. They should have terrified her, giving him a look of some evil creature that she would have seen in a movie when she was a kid. But there wasn’t anything terrifying about Zee to her; she could feel his love toward her, and knew he’d destroy half the galaxy if it meant protecting her.

He was hers and she was his and nothing else mattered.

“Take me to bed.” She needed to feel close to him, needed to cement their relationship forever in her heart and mind. “I want to be with you.”

The advantage of Zee being able to read her emotional state was that she didn’t need to worry about over explaining what she wanted from him. In one smooth motion, he scooped her into his arms and marched over to the transportation tube. Mags didn’t pay attention to exactly where they were going – she’d have time enough to learn the l
ayout of the prison – and instead rested her head on his shoulder and relaxed.

She was only mildly surprised when they stepped out of the tube and onto a floor she hadn’t been to yet. Zee placed a kiss to the top of her head. “These are where the living quarters are. I have a proper room here, though I rarely use it.”

“We’ll have to change that. Give you a reason to want to come back at the end of your day.”

She knew he normally didn’t have an end of his day, but Mags wanted to give that to him. Create a family, albeit a small one, that he’d want to come home to. The quarters were larger than the room she’d slept in back at his office, though it was just as impersonal. He set her down once the doors slid closed and she took a moment to look around.

“It’s nice.” She shrugged. “Could use some personality.”

“I’ll leave that up to you.” He looked at her for a long moment, the intensity of his gaze sent a shiver of arousal through her. “I want to bed you.”

“Yes.” There was so much more she wanted to say, but the words escaped her. “Please.”

There weren’t many options for where the bedroom would be located, so it only took her a moment to find it. She didn’t wait for him to act, and instead began to pull her clothing from her body piece by piece. She felt him come to the doorway to watch her, but Zee didn’t make a move to help. It wasn’t the sexiest of stripteases, but it did the job. By the time she kicked her pants free from her legs and stood fully naked before him, Zee looked ready to explode.

He pulled his shirt off and tossed it to the side, before removing his boots and opening the front of his pants. Half-naked and fully aroused was a good look on him; one that Mags whole-heartedly approved of. She let him come to her before dropping to her knees so she could press her face to his hardened cock. She breathed him in, memorizing his scent, absorbing his heat and accepting the love that she could feel bleeding from him. Mags didn’t know if Zee would ever be overly expressive when it came to his emotions, but she wasn’t certain that even mattered. She knew he cared for her, and he accepted her love in return.

Pulling his pants down, she was finally able to get a close look at his rondella, the dark green patch of skin she knew drove his sexual pleasure. She grabbed his cock and squeezed, and she pressed her mouth to the center of it, enjoying the gasp that popped from him. This feeling was powerful, knowing this man, a cyborg with strength and abilities so far beyond her own, was at her mercy with a single touch. She stroked his cock with short, even strokes as she licked and kissed the sensitive skin, teasing Zee until she felt his body began to shake.

She moved her mouth away only to stretch her body up as high as she could reach on her knees and swallow his cock. She continued to tease his head as she shifted her hand to the rondella, pressing and scraping it with her fingernails, loving the way his body shook from his rising pleasure. Mags tilted her head back as far as she was able, to look up at him as she lapped at the underside of his cockhead.

Zee’s eyes were opened and locked on her. The glow from his gray pupils seemed brighter, more intense and completely fixed on her. She shivered and sucked even harder, hoping he enjoyed the show. It must have been too much for him, because he suddenly reached down and cupped her face, pulling her from his cock.

“Bed.” He helped her up, though in his eagerness he lifted her off the floor and carried her over himself.

Mags stretched out on the bed and immediately opened her legs. Her pussy was wet, and she knew it would take next to nothing to pull an orgasm from her. How Zee did this to her without trying wasn’t something she’d worry about. They were now one, a pair that wouldn’t be divided. She’d finally found the thing in her life that had been missing – the other half of her soul.

Instead of covering her body with his, Zee leaned over her from the side and captured her mouth. He plundered her with his tongue as he slid his hand across her breasts to pinch her nipple. Mags gasped, but he didn’t pull away or stop teasing her. There was no point in trying to fight off the sensations, so she relaxed instead and let them wash through her.

Zee got to his knees and kissed his way down her throat and over her breast. He paused to suck her nipple into his mouth, teasing the swollen tip with his tongue until she could feel every flick in her pussy. He then moved across her stomach, to the top of her pubic hair. Zee moaned as he pressed his nose to her hair and breathed in her scent. “This is the best evolutionary element of your people.”

Mags laughed. “Pubic hair? There are a lot of humans who would disagree with you.”

“It’s perfect.” He licked across her clit as he pressed a finger into her pussy. “You’re perfect.”

Mags was about to come. The dual assault brought her dangerously close to the edge of her release, and she knew it would only take a small nudge to push her over. Letting her hand fall to his head, she gently pushed down and hoped he’d understand what she meant.

  He did.

Zee sucked her clit into his mouth and began to fuck her with his finger. She tried to ride out the sensations as long as possible, but within a few seconds the first rush of her orgasm flooded through her, bowing her back and pulling a scream of pleasure from her. Zee didn’t relent until every wave of pleasure had run its course. Only then did he release her clit and climb onto the bed between her legs.

He filled her with a single, hard thrust, his cock filling her as his pubic bone pressed against her still sensitive clit. Zee fucked into her, and each movement forward connected with her clit, threatening to pull another orgasm from Mags. She’d never been able to come more than once; the sensations were typically too powerful and overwhelmed her body. But with Zee’s ability to feel her emotions, shit, practically read her mind, he knew exactly how to touch her without her needing to say anything.

Mags hooked her legs around his back, increasing the pressure between their bodies. His chest rubbed against her sensitive nipples, as he moved his mouth to her shoulder. She was still sensitive from where he’d bit her before, but the pain was quickly becoming something she enjoyed. It somehow highlighted the pleasure, making everything that little bit more intense. Instead of shying away from it, she turned her head to give him better access.

Zee groaned loudly against her skin. The rhythm of his thrusts began to falter, and she knew he was close. The first pinch of his teeth against her skin mixed with the second explosion of pleasure. She screamed, clinging to Zee as he bit harder, his own orgasm hitting him as he fucked her hard, filling her body with his come.

The world slipped away, and Mags was only aware of him, her and this primal love between them.

When his body finally came to a rest, Mags held him close, not wanting him to pull away. She’d finally come home after a lifetime of wanting something more than the life that had been presented to her back on Earth. She’d finally found it with Zee out here in the middle of the galaxy and she couldn’t be happier.

“I love you.” She placed a kiss to the side of his cybernetic implant on his head. “I feel safe with you. I never want to leave.”

Zee stiffened for the briefest of moments, before turning his face toward hers. “How can you love a monster like me? I’m angry all the time. My body is half machine. I died.”

“That doesn’t matter to me. You’re dedicated. You do what needs to be done. You’d die to protect those you care about. That makes you better than a lot of the humans I knew back on Earth.”

Zee cocooned around her, holding her tight in his arms. “I love you too. Please never leave me.”

“I won’t.” Mags had never been wanted that badly by another, nor had she wanted another person as much as she did Zee.

They laid there, holding one another in the darkness. Mags rubbed circles across Zee’s bald head and counted his heartbeats against her breast. Yes, this might not have been the life she’d envisioned when she’d first boarded the Kraken back on Earth, but she knew it was going to be a good one.

  “I’m going to de
corate these rooms.”

“As you want.” He kissed her neck.

“And I’m going to want to get training from Hallam. You need medical staff here in the prison and I need a job.”

  “Of course.”

“And you’ll need to stop living in your office. I don’t want to be alone all day.”

Zee lifted his head and looked into her eyes. “I’ll do anything, as long as we’re together.”

That was when Mags knew everything was going to be perfect.
