by Jack Benton

‘Good luck with everything, Mr Hardy. I can’t imagine this has been easy on you, either.’

Slim opened his mouth to respond, but could think of nothing to say. Instead he gave a short nod, then watched as Ted limped away to the door, out into the street beyond, and away into the world.

  Acknowledgments

This book was something of a departure for me. It was my first attempt to write a mystery, and was written in a way I’ve never tried before—entirely on a smartphone. As a result it took a lot longer to write than most of my books, with a lot of thinking time between writing sessions. I think it turned out rather well, and I hope that you, the reader, will agree.

Special thanks to P.C. Melanie Earnshaw for your insights into all things to do with law enforcement, and to Jenny Twist for your notes and encouragement.

And finally, thank you to my readers. You make all the lonely hours of writing worth it.
