“Because I know you’re going to take the lead and teach me a whole lot of new things.”

“Not only in the bedroom,” he said as he raised an eyebrow shooting me a look.

“As much as I can’t wait to learn there, it’s all the little things in day-to-day life I look forward to the most.”

“And it’s a life with you that I look forward to most.”

  EPILOGUE

  Luke

A few months later at semester’s end

I have to admit, Luke, although Bob gave his blessing I wasn’t totally sure how this was going to turn out,” Zoey’s mom, Sabrina said.

Sabrina was a great woman. She was a few years younger than me, but looked a solid ten years younger than that. She took great care of herself and as much as I teased her about her hippie tendencies, her all-natural lifestyle had been more than kind to her.

“I hear a ‘but’ in there somewhere,” I said.

She smiled and gave me a pat on the shoulder. “But, it’s been perfect.”

  “I’m glad to hear that.”

“I am too. Zoey’s doing great in school, she’s focused on her future, and Bob and are overjoyed that future includes you.”

“Continues to include me, Sabrina. I have always been part of your life and always will be.”

“We know, Luke, and that’s why we love you.”

Emotions were riding high so the moment seemed right.

“Can I have everyone’s attention, please?” I said.

“Honey, your voice resonates so strongly,” Zoey said, coming up from behind and surprising me with a hug.

  “I know.”

“Everyone’s having such a good time.”

  “Exactly. It’s why I need everyone’s attention.”

“You plan on making it better?”

“I plan on making it perfect.” I reached down and tapped her on the nose. She smiled.

“You always do.” I gave her a kissed and turned to address our friends and families.

“I want to thank everyone for coming here today to celebrate Zoey’s perfect semester. A perfect 4.0 GPA. Let’s put our hands together for Zoey.” As everyone clapped I felt a nudge in my ribs. She didn’t want the spotlight. It was one of the things I found most beautiful about her. She was content to do what needed to be done without the need for personal recognition. She was as beautiful in her unselfish ways as she was in the beauty that she radiated.

“Zoey and I have know each other for a long time. Her father and I go way back. As you all know, we’re best buds. And not only are we best buds, but you are our closest friends. We wanted this celebration to be as tight-knit as possible, and I know we definitely achieved that. We’re honored each and every one of you came.” I took a minute to make eye contact with everyone in the crowd. Most of the guys seemed unsure where this speech was going, but I saw a few of the women start to tear up. They were on to my plan.

“And I’m honored to have the most amazing woman ever in my life,” I continued. I turned to face Zoey. I stared into her eyes as a smile found its way onto my face. I took a knee.

“Zoey, when I see something I want I go for it will everything I have. I don’t stop until I get it and when I get it I protect it, keep it safe, and do everything I can to treat it with the utmost respect, and care, and positivity known to man. Zoey, not only are you that something that I want, you are something that I need. Something that I have to have to function. Something I can’t live without. And I don’t want to live another day without the world knowing you are mine, and I am yours.”

She had her hands over her face and tears were streaming down her cheeks. At that moment the world stood still. I only saw, heard, and felt her. The most beautiful woman I’d ever met.

“You’ve taken my breath away for a long, long time now. Now, I hope I can take away yours.” I opened the hand which I had held shut, hiding my intentions. Inside was a small black box. I opened the box and removed the diamond engagement ring I knew would be suit her perfectly. Classy and understated. Elegant without drawing too much attention to itself. A quiet kind of confidence, just like she had.

  “Zoey, will you marry me?”

She reached down and grabbed my face pulling me up to hers. She was crying like I had never seen before as she kissed me hard. I felt her feet leave the ground as she jumped into my arms.

  “Yes!”

“She said yes!” her father said.

Everyone clapped. Men whistled. Women wiped away tears.

“You’ve made me the happiest woman in the world,” she said softly.

“And you’ve made me the luckiest man in the world,” I said.

  “I love you,” she said.

  “I love you.”
