  A MESSAGE FROM ALEXI FERREIRA

  TWISTED (Capella Family)

  DOM 1

  VLAD 1

“What the hell happened?” I ask as I walk into Alexei’s office. I’m getting really tired of the constant fight; is it too hard to ask for a few months’ peace? Alexei is standing by the window, looking out at the lights of the city. When he turns, I see the tension on his face. As my brother and the Bratva Fury boss here in South Africa, I have a responsibility to always stand by him. I love my brother more than I love anyone else in this world, but sometimes I really wish things could be easier.

“Close the door,” he mutters as he walks towards his desk and sits down. Closing the office door, I walk back towards his desk, take a seat opposite him, and wait for him to continue.

“The shipment that came in today was confiscated by the cops. It’s just a matter of time before they come knocking on our door.”

I wasn’t expecting this. Fuck. “How the fuck did they know?” I ask, perplexed. The only people who knew about this shipment was Alexei, Nik, Dimitri, and myself.

“I don’t know. All I know is that the shipment came directly from Russia to here,” Alexei says as he sits forward in his chair, placing his hands, fisted in anger, on his desk. I don’t blame him. The shipment was a shitload of money that we will lose, but most important is the possibility of being arrested because of this.

“The leak can’t be from us,” I say, as I would stake my life on the fact that Nik and Dimitri wouldn’t betray us.

“How would they know that we were receiving that shipment today?”

“What if the leak is in Russia?” I ask, knowing that that is a very slim possibility, as our father’s most trusted men would die for the Bratva Fury.

“I have spoken to Father, and he’s sure that it isn’t.”

Fuck, I hate this. We are going to have to question Nik and Dimitri. “I’m going to call Nik and Dimitri, and we are going to get to the bottom of this, hopefully before the fucking cops come knocking on the door. There is no way they can link it back to us.” I think back to the alias we created. We went through a lot of trouble to not have any of this linked to us in case something like this happened. Now that this shipment has been caught, we won’t be able to use this route any longer. A lot of things will have to change. New plans need to be made, new routes. Our clients will need to be appeased, as we won’t be able to deliver the armament on time.

“We need to warn the Elementals MC not to go and collect, or Draco will burst a blood vessel if one of his guys gets pulled for transporting armament,” I state, thinking of the motorcycle club that does all the transporting of our weapons for us.

“I didn’t give Draco any details until I was happy that everything was ready for them. The only thing I need to do is cancel the collection.”

“We should ask Draco to get Celmund to look into the police files and see if there is a name there of who tipped them off.” Celmund from the Elementals is the best hacker we know. He will be able to get any information we need. Alexei looks at me and nods, a calculating look in his eyes, just as there is a knock on the door. Nik and Dimitri have arrived, and it’s time to play. I doubt either of them is the snitch, but we will still have to test the waters and see.

  “Come,” Alexei calls.

“Boss, you called?” Dimitri asks as he walks in, Nik behind him.

“Take a seat,” Alexei orders as he stands and comes around the desk until he is before the two men. “We have a problem.”

Nik shows no emotion, like his normal self, and Dimitri simply raises a brow, but besides that, there is no tell-tale sign that they might know what this is about.

“The shipment was intercepted, and I want to know how the fuck they knew to look there.”

“Who knew about the shipment besides us?” Dimitri asks with a frown as he leans forward in his seat.

“No one,” I mutter, “just us.”

Nik tenses as he looks at Dimitri, me, and then Alexei. “None of us would snitch,” he says in his calm way. From looking at them, there is no way of telling if there is anything they are hiding. I know these two men, and I swear they’re not the snitching type. If anything, they would die for Alexei. There is no way any of us did this, but we still need to know who did.

“Have any of you mentioned anything to anyone about the shipment, or been on your phones talking about it where you could have been overheard?”

No. I feel my body snap at the thought that has just flickered through my mind. Not possible. Surely she wouldn’t have betrayed me? There must be some other explanation for this.

“Vlad?” Alexei asks when he sees how tense I am.

“No.” I won’t believe she would do this. When this meeting is done, I am going to go talk to her. I’ll be able to tell from her expression if she betrayed me. I can feel my stomach clench in knots when I think that the only woman I have ever even thought of trusting might have betrayed me. I have been seeing Haley for the last seven months. Things started like all my other conquests start, but since the beginning, I found something in Haley that I don’t find in other women.

No one in the Bratva knows that I’m seeing Haley. I keep our relationship secret from my life here. Only recently have I opened up to her and let her into my life. No one knows about Haley, and that is how I want it; I want her to be my getaway from all of this. When I’m around her, I feel a semblance of peace that I can never find here. I don’t know what I will do if I find that me opening up to her has placed my brother in danger of being arrested.

It has always been Alexei and I against the world. I won’t ever let anything happen to him. “Vlad!” Alexei calling my name has me snapping back to the present.

  “Da.”

“Call the Elementals and organize what we discussed earlier,” Alexei states. I can see the way he is analysing me that he must have picked up on something. I purposefully kept Haley to myself so that I wouldn’t have to bring her into this life. When I look at the men in this room and how they are always worried about their women, and how the women have to be extra careful all because their men belong in this life, I just wanted it to be different with Haley and me.
>
I don’t know if the person who betrayed us is Haley. I don’t know how I could be so wrong if it is, but either way, I will find out, and if it is her, I will have no mercy. She has never seen this side of me, but if this is her doing, then she better be prepared, because I will have no forgiveness.

“Dimitri, I want security ready to take Jade and my children into safety if this comes to me.” At those words, my fury rises. To think that this could affect Jade and the kids has me standing and pacing. If I don’t walk this anger off, I will explode. I want to punch something, the anger coursing through my body volcanic.

“I will take responsibility for this shipment if it comes to that,” I state.

“Do you really think they will believe that when they know I’m the boss?” Alexei asks. He turns to face me, his stance tense but his eyes thankful. “What you will do if I get arrested is go with Jade and take care of my family until I am capable of doing it myself.” I shake my head. There is no way I will let Alexei be separated from his family when this might have been my fault. “Vlad, listen to me.” Alexei’s voice brooks no argument. “If I am arrested, you will do as I say.”

I know I am the person he trusts completely. To know that this might be my fault has me feeling like my heart is being wrenched from my chest.

“Da,” I answer, but I will do everything in my power for it not to come to that. First, I will start by talking to the Elementals and getting Celmund to look into the case file and get us a name. Second, I will go talk to Haley, and if I find that what I suspect is true, there is nowhere that she will be safe.

“Good,” Alexei states, turning once again to face the other two. “You can go. Let me know as soon as you find something.”

I pull my phone out of my pocket when Nik and Dimitri leave, and dial Brandr’s number. I have known Brandr for many years, and not once has he let me down. When contacting the Elementals, instead of phoning Draco, the president of the club, I always contact Brandr. This time is no different, as I want him to do something else for me without Alexei finding out.

“Vlad,” Brandr greets after the third ring. “What can I do you for?”

I nod at Alexei and then walk out of the office. “Brandr, haven’t talked to you for a long time.”

“Well, I’m sure you haven’t phoned now to speak either.” As usual, he goes straight to the point, and that is what I like about him.

“Unfortunately, you are quite right. I need a favour,” I say.

“Anything.” Until now, anything I have ever asked of Brandr he has never asked me any questions, but has always been prepared to help.

“Someone betrayed us. Our shipment was confiscated.” I hear him grunt in anger, but he doesn’t interrupt. “I need Celmund to look into the case file and see if there is a name of the person who gave us up.”

“No problem. You should have the information soon.”

“There is something else.” I shouldn’t be doing this. What if she isn’t responsible? “I need him to get me everything he can on a woman called Haley Grant.” There is a pause on the line, but then Brandr confirms that they will get me all the information I require.

I never asked Dimitri to look into Haley’s past, as I didn’t want anyone to know about her, and I knew that if Dimitri knew about Haley, he would have told Alexei as a matter of principle. That was my mistake. I wanted to trust her, and I hope my gullibility isn’t the cause of my brother being prosecuted.

“Thank you,” I say before we disconnect the call. Now it is time to go face Haley, and I hope I am completely wrong about her. Seven months ago, when I met her, it was a breath of fresh air. I was on my way home from one of my fights, my body in pain from the blows I received. The left side of my face felt like it was double the size. All I wanted was to get home and into bed, but a mile before arriving home, I saw a car on the side of the road. The hood was up, and it was clear that the car wasn’t going anywhere, by the smoke billowing from under that hood. That was when I saw her. She came from around the hood, and I swear my fuzzy mind went into overdrive.

I still remember the first thing I thought was that she was going to be mine. I stopped the car to go help her, but I could see she was wary. I didn’t blame her. If anything, since then, I have made sure that that doesn’t happen to her again. It was past midnight, on a deserted road, and she was stranded with a man she didn’t know. I was expecting to be helping her and then getting home and into bed, but it turned out that she had other plans.

The minute she saw me, she was the one trying to help, and no matter how much I said that I was fine, she disputed it. She wanted to call the police because of what was done to me, until I told her that I had just come from my fight. Most women are attracted to me because of what I am, but not Haley. She was not impressed with my choices. Instead, she went out of her way to tell me about all the things that could go wrong because of my career choices, and she didn’t even know about me belonging to the mafia then.

Haley wasn’t like the other women who hang around the fights. She took hard work to even agree to go out on a date with me. I have never wanted to spend much time with a woman like I do with Haley. She makes me hotter than any other women I have ever known, but she also calms me and brings me peace, something I don’t find much in the life I lead.

I never let my guard down, but Haley has a way about her that has me lowering my guard. About a month ago, we had just had a run-in with the cartel. I was shot in the arm, which kept me away from Haley for a week before everything was settled and we were happy with the outcome. I could have lied to Haley, but I didn’t and told her what I am. What I like about Haley is that you always know what she is thinking, or so I thought.

She wasn’t pleased about my confession, or as she put it, the disregard for my life, but she tended to my wound and for the first time made me feel cared for. Two weeks later, I was with her when Alexei phoned. She heard our conversation about the shipment, because afterwards, she asked me if we were distributing drugs and that she wanted nothing to do with someone who distributed drugs to kids.

Call me stupid, but I didn’t want her to think that about us. We don’t dabble in drugs. Alexei is adamant that if any one of our men is caught with drugs, he will be made to pay. Therefore, I told her about the weapons. The other details she would have heard from the conversation with Alexei. I have opened up to Haley more than I have opened up to anyone. I have told her things about myself that I never talk to with anyone, not even Andrei, who is a close friend, or Alexei, as the boss and best friend. I have for the first time in my life trusted a woman. I just hope she doesn’t make me regret it, because if she is the one who leaked that information to the police, that means that if anything happens to Alexei, it will be my fault, and that I will not be able to live with.

  HALEY 2

I’m so ready to go home. I had to pick up a second shift, as there have been a few staff coming down with the flu, and now I’m just ready to jump into bed and sleep for twelve hours straight. I hope Paige isn’t there waiting for me. I love my sister, but she has been on my case about Vlad since she overhead him telling me that he belongs to the mafia.

I know that she is worried about me, but she should know by now that I can take care of myself. I have been taking care of her and myself ever since our parents died, just before I finished my nursing training. Paige is now twenty-one, and I worry about her. She has no drive to study or do anything with her life. I know that I should mother her less and make her understand that she can’t depend on me for everything, but I just can’t. She took the death of our parents so hard.

I know that the thought of me seeing Vlad frightens her because she sees it as if he’s taking me away from her. It’s not even because of what he does, but just the fact that he’s in my life. She was just coming home when I left for work. She had been drinking, which seems to have become a habit lately. I try to give her everything she needs, but I can’t give her everything she wants because I just don’t earn enough. Sh
e rebels at not being able to do everything that her friends do, but it’s just not possible at the moment.

She rebels, and I know it’s her age, but I just can’t give her any more. I just hope that she’s not home when I get there so that I can find my sleep. I know that in a way, she is right about Vlad. Why would I be seeing a man who belongs to the mafia, a man who is a professional kickboxer? Everything about him is the opposite of what I think a man should be, but something about Vlad calls to me. Ever since the day we met, when he stepped out of his car to come help me, I could clearly see that he was in pain, but he was trying to downplay it.

In the last seven months since knowing Vlad, my life has changed. Not only has he gotten me another car, insisting that he couldn’t possibly let me drive a death trap that was liable to stop at any moment, but he is adamant about me not paying him back. One day, I walked out of the house to find another car in the drive and mine gone, a note on the windshield telling me that I was the new owner. When I opened the car door, I found the ownership papers on the passenger seat in my name. I insisted on getting my car back, but he ignored me. I then tried to arrange a payment scheme to pay the car back, but he turned that down. I know Vlad has money by the Mustang he drives and the suits he wears, but I don’t want him to pay for my stuff.

I don’t see him often, as he apparently travels a bit and I’m guessing is busy with mafia business, which I don’t want to know about. When he told me everything, it finally made sense—the scars on his body, which I can tell aren’t made from his kickboxing. His tattoos cover most of them, but there are still some that are evident.

Vlad has been nothing but caring with me. Sometimes I find it difficult to believe that he can do what he does. I know that there is another side to him that he keeps away from me. It is clear that he doesn’t want me anywhere near his life. He doesn’t ever introduce me to anyone in his life, but to be honest, I don’t mind, as I still haven’t wrapped my mind around the fact that he’s involved with the mafia.
