When Palo and Dom walked through the front door of Palo’s trailer home, they were laughing.

“I’m telling you, Dom, that was some sick shit you pulled back there.”

  “Palo…” Dom said.

“You were like bam, throwing a knife out of nowhere and taking off the dude’s finger.”

  “Palo…”

“We got lucky, too. We just beat the sun. Ten minutes longer and we would have never made it back here.”

“PALO!” Dominic yelled. “What did it mean back there when that guy said you’re not DOD?”

Palo yawned. “It’s getting early, dude. Let’s talk about this tonight when we get up.”

Dominic grabbed his arm. “I don’t have time for these games, Palo. If you hold back information from me, it’s just going to slow me down from finding Duke and ultimately finding Florin.”

Palo moved out of Dominic’s grip. “Easy, chief, there’s nothing you can do now anyway. We’re in for the day, or did you forget about that little thing called the sun—the one natural thing that will wipe us off the face of this Earth. It happens to be up and out, waiting to fry some vampire flesh.”

Dominic stomped over to the window, grabbed the heavy curtains and glanced at Palo.

“What are you doing? The sun’s out!” Palo’s voice rose.

Dominic threw the drape open and let the sun flood into Palo’s two-bedroom home. The warmth covered his body and face, sending a slight chill of pleasure under his skin.

Palo maneuvered backward, up and over the chair, and crouched down in the shadows behind the piece of furniture.

Dominic basked in the warmth of the sun and absorbed the aura of Palo’s fear.

“What the fuck?” Palo stood and stared at his houseguest. “How are you doing that?”

When Dominic released the drape, the darkness consumed the room again. He lowered his head and glared at Palo from his narrowed brown and golden eyes.

Palo didn’t move. He had one hand on the ripped recliner and his other hand ran over the tips of his Mohawk. “Dude, that’s unnatural.”

In a low, calculated voice, Dom whispered, “Let’s just say, sunlight won’t be a problem.”

Palo backed up, staring intently at Dominic. “Only Pure Bloods can do that.”

  Prologue

The claws of Father’s hellhounds clicked against the asphalt somewhere behind me. That sound was enough to drive me crazy. It provoked the same shudder in me that a dentist’s drill caused in a human.

I could hear them—no matter how far away they were, I could hear their sharp claws digging into the solid ground of the dimension they navigated. The sound of their labored panting prickled my senses and sent shivers up and down my spine.

I had been running from those beasts for three months, and the only time I had been able to lose them was when I’d showed up in a densely populated city. Where there were many people, there were crimes—where there were crimes, the hellhounds would lose their focus on me and salivate on their playground of sin.

I had lost them in Bangkok and again in New York City, but today, I resigned from being their quarry in Father’s relentless pursuit. Now, I simply waited for the hellhounds to catch up with me. It was time to turn myself in—time to stand up to my father and tell him that I wanted him to treat me like an adult. After all, in two weeks, I’d be twenty-one years old.

I kneeled on the roof of the tallest building in Los Angeles and waited. While I watched the sun set behind the horizon, the sky turned orange and then black. The tingle in my body told me that Father’s hellhounds were finally closing in on me.

I’m Dhellia Hunt, the daughter of Lucifer and Adana. I’m twenty years old, and this is my story.
