  “Look…OUT!!!”

My words came out slowly in comparison to how fast the missiles headed toward us, Carter turned the wheel to the right and steady himself as he scraped passed a nearby car. He moved more to the right just as one of the missiles hit the ground exploding instantly…I felt the back of the car rise momentarily before hitting the ground hard causing the car to bounce for a moment. The second missile hit it was off to the left causing two cars to fly into the air. Tessa evaded the incoming debris with ease then made a sudden left turn just before disappearing from my line of sight. I stuck my head out of the window nearly smacking it against a car, I couldn’t see Tessa though where did she go?

Beeershoo beeeershoooo two more missiles launched heading toward us, they seemed to be heading for the ground a lot faster than the first two missiles which I found odd but then I realized they weren’t aimed at us but what was in front of us. Carter moved from the right immediately once he saw an opening which let us leave our position of hugging the sidewalk. Just as we got back into the street a number of cars in front of us exploded in a column of smoke and flames. Carter zigzagged around the falling debris beeershooo beeershooo beeershooo three missiles flew toward the ground beeerp beeerp beeerp along with a storm of bullets from behind. Even with Carter’s skilled driving the car was still being perforated. I leaned out of the window and began firing at the helicopter, this one didn’t have a turret instead there were shooters peeking out of the helicopter windows. Baaaarp baaaarp baaarp I hit one of the shooters killing him instantly…I could feel my heart beating in my chest while I leaned out of the window more when the tires suddenly screeched eeeeeer. I was thrown against the door which cause it to open. With the way I was position a portion of my body hung in the window while the rest struggle not to touch the ground.

A sarcasm comment came to mind just as I noticed the missiles hitting the ground in front of us booooom booooom booom. Carter turned at the last second which cause the door to lurch to the side moving me along with it. But it wasn’t enough, the explosions were too close, the door tore off as smoke and fire consumed the car. I couldn’t act I hit the ground rolling uncontrollably against it. It felt like I was being beaten with granite, I hit my head a number of times which dazed me. Everything sounded like it was underwater from where I was, I could just barely see the car driving away. It wasn’t moving very fast and flames had consumed the back. Smoke rolled off of the car and then booom it exploded. My eyes widen with fear and anger just before I yelled…

  “Noooo Carter…”

I yelled at least I think I did because there was no sound in fact I couldn’t hear anything. My eyes felt heavy and the dazed feeling grew while a figure approached me. I couldn’t tell who or what it was but it seemed like they were saying something.

“What am I going to do with you?”

I have no idea if the figure spoke because right after I saw it I closed my eyes and drift off to sleep.

  Chapter 12

  Carter- Five minutes Earlier

Why was this happening, why the hell were so many people after us? Stupid question it was because of money that was why I was currently getting shot at with missiles and helicopter turrets. My luck is beyond ridiculous. There it is finally. My hands gripped the wheel and I turned to the left finally able to leave the sidewalk heading back into the street. Beeershooo beeershooo cars exploded which forced my grip to tighten for a moment damaging the steering wheel a bit. Car parts rained down, I turned to the left then right and back to the left zigzagging as best I could passed the debris. Beeeerrshooo beeershooo beeeershooo three missiles launched toward the ground…..baaaarp baaaarp baaaarp bullets pelted the back window. No matter how I moved the car bullets still seemed to be hitting us. It was only a matter of time before I couldn’t keep this up anymore. Baaaarp baaaaarp baaaarp, from the side view mirror I could see Alex shooting at the helicopter behind us.

I turned my attention forward and not a moment too soon, a van was parked in the middle of the street. My reaction was instantaneous pulling the steering wheel hard eeeeeer the tires seemingly screamed as the car lurched to the side which was followed by a thud against one of the car doors. For a second it look like Alex was hanging outside of the car. I didn’t focus on that though because the missiles finally hit the ground. Booom booom booom smoke and fire erupted in front of me consuming my field of vison, I made one last desperate right turn. The inside of the car began heating up rapidly, sweat ran down my neck and smoke began invading my lungs. I knew the car wasn’t going to hold out for much longer. So I needed to focus and make every second count or else this car could become our grave. First I moved my hands down to stomach level and held them parallel from one another. It took a moment but then electricity started to discharge between my fingers eventually forming a ball between my hands.

“Sorry about this AJ. But this is probably going to hurt.”

My hands started moving apart expanding the size of the ball, AJ’s body twitched for a moment as the ball enveloped us. In a matter of seconds the ball had covered us completely, I held my hands out to maintain the shape and size of the ball, any minute now. Seconds felt like hours as I waited for what came next. The inevitable explosion it was only a matter of seconds now until….BOOM. The car exploded around us zeeet zeeeet zeeeet my barrier surged while smoke and flames coiled around. I couldn’t see anything or hear anything for that matter, my fingers flexed and expanded the barrier outward in a rapid fashion. While it expanded it became thinner quickly dispersing after a while. AJ and I rolled forward, it was anything but pleasant but we were alive.

It took me a moment before I took in the scene before me, fires burning, cars wrecked, bullet holes everywhere. The whirling of a helicopter filled the air which caused me to instantly react by jumping forward and rolling into a crouched position right by the corner of a nearby building. It took me a moment to realize that the whirling sound was getting further and further away.

“I guess they figured they got us when the car exploded.”

I turned toward AJ and noticed something was off, I looked around craning my head side to side as I moved my body around in a circle three sixty degrees.

  “Where’s Alex?”

AJ looked at me for a moment then took a quick look around before returning his gaze to me. What happened? What happened? I started to feel a sinking feeling which made me feel unease then something occurred to me. Alex was holding on to the door. Maybe the missile explosion knock him back. Taking a deep breath I steady myself and fought back whatever sinking feeling was encroaching upon me.

  “We need to find Alex?”

  “What about Tessa?” AJ asked.

I blinked for a moment realizing she wasn’t anywhere to be seen. Great more problems. I didn’t have an answer for AJ at the moment instead I just headed down the road walking through the carnage from our afternoon drive. AJ followed after me walking a few steps behind. Wonder if he’s injured or it could be he’s a little off cause he just got zapped. It’ll wear off eventually. I could only hope that Alex was ok…he was fine I know it. There was no way that a helicopter was going to take Alex down. He was probably searching for us right now. Just you wait Alexander we’ll find you. It had occurred to me as AJ and I started navigating our way back along the road that conversation would probably be a bit stale considering the type of person AJ was. It almost made me wish one of the bounty hunters was around so I could talk to them before beating them senseless of course.

“Over there.” AJ remarked about something in the middle of the road.

I wasn’t sure what it was at first because I was looking for a person or object something along those lines. But what AJ was pointing at was none of those things, they were skid marks, first set we’d spotted so far meaning these were the last ones made. I didn’t think my barrier had moved us that far I guess the car had held out a lot longer than I thought it would when the missiles hit. The area around the skid marks were scorched making it hard to
actually see but they were visible enough that you knew they were there. Hooooonk my eyes darted toward the sound of a car horn which accompanied a speeding car down the road. It ran right passed us a little too close for comfort if you ask me.

“Why the hell are they driving so fast? The roads block anyway.”

There was a sudden pause for a moment as I filed through my mind looking for a specific vague piece of information. The car that had run passed us was a van and that van in particular looked like the sides of it had been run down with soot. My eyes widened as I turned around toward AJ, he was sporting a similar look on his face. We have to follow that van. Without wasting another second I started running in the direction the van sped off to. AJ was a decent way behind but he kept up diligently. It wasn’t long before I could hear the engine of a car in motion. I couldn’t be certain if it was the van in question but it was a good bet that it was since no other car were currently moving in that direction.

“Carter catch the van. Do not worry about me. I will catch up to you in a moment.” AJ yelled the words across the distance between us. I heard him loud and clear.

“Ok. Don’t get too far behind.”

And with that I pressed my back leg against the ground then pushed off. I launched forward, my feet hit the ground quickly while I took large and quick steps. I regulated my breath while my arms began working their way up and down as I chased after the van. The world around started to shift, it started to sail behind as I rushed forward, after a few seconds of running like this I saw the van overhead. Now that I had it in my sights I wasn’t going to let it get away. As if the driver heard what I was thinking the van accelerated suddenly. A cocky smile went across my face, I knew for a fact that I could reach the van if I really tired. My arms flailed back and forth in the air as I kept my momentum up. The van kept at it too, the driver pressed the gas and zoom ahead a couple feet ahead of me then turned sloppily to the right. The van lifted off on one side before going around the corner.

Not wanting to lose the van I picked up the pace, my breathing was quick in…out…in…out. Eeeeer beeeesh, I turned the corner just in time to see the van crash into a fire hydrant, water erupted into the air and gushed over the front of the van. I started to slow down a couple of feet away from the van, I took in deep breaths trying to regain my composure. Running like that wasn’t fun, mainly because it took a lot out of me. I had to wonder if Tessa would be this out of breath, probably not considering her power, she probably would have stopped the van in a minute flat. I wonder where she is or Alex was for that matter. Let’s hope this van can answer my questions. The van was in sight it was green, the front was smooshed by the fire hydrant and the side of it looking like someone had rubbed it down with ash or something.

The side of the van was right in front of me so I decided to knock on it. My knuckle hit against the van door after that there was silence for a moment then I heard the sound of a gun being cocked. Jumping to the right I avoided the first wave of gunfire just barely.

Even so I still felt a sharp pain in my side, the van door slid open while three men in ski mask and black outfits jumped out. They looked like they were Black Ops or something like that although that wasn’t important at the moment. What was, was the fact they were all pointing their guns at me, with my right hand I shot a ball of electricity into the fire hydrant. In a matter of seconds electricity snaked around the car and leapt onto each of the gunmen. Reflexively they pulled down the trigger of their guns releasing a stream of gunfire in a number of directions. First, I dodged by jumping back then running toward the left in a curved motion. Once I was within range I threw my left hand forward punching one of the gunmen in the chest, he flew back into the car hitting the right side door.

This caused the car to rock to the right for a moment, the gunman to my left punched my right side as hard as he could which sent searing pain through the entirety of my stomach. I turned my left hand around grabbing hold of his outstretched arm then I sent my right hand forward hitting his elbow. There was a crunch sound followed by…

  “Aaaaaha…”

Once I let the gunmen go he staggered backward in pain, the last gunmen jabbed at me quickly. I leaned back dodging his jabs, a few were close so I knocked them away. That didn’t stop the gunman from running forward on the offensive. I flashed him a smile then stepped on his right foot causing him to move backward from the pain. Raising both my hands up I clapped them against his ears disorienting him, he staggered backward so I followed after him grabbing his head suddenly. I held on tight then slammed his head through the passenger door window, out of the peripheral of my eyes I saw movement. Taking two quick steps to the left I avoided an incoming jab from a knife, unfortunately for the gunman who was in the window the knife stabbed into his back.

Two jabs to the face then I grabbed hold of the knife wielding hand just as he removed it from the other gunmen’s back and pulled him toward me throwing him over my shoulder onto the ground. Once he was on the ground I stepped on his shoulder forcing him to drop the knife.

“You know you could have just played dead when you went flying into the van. Avoiding this entirely. No instead you had to be the guy who brings out a knife, I think you killed your man over there by the way.” My tone was playful and calm.

“Thanks for the tip, but I’ve still got my other guy.”

Even if he hadn’t said anything my instincts would have kicked in, I moved my leg away from his shoulder and pulled him up by his arm. The gunmen jerked toward me just as I moved him in front of me. Baaaarp baaaarp baaaaarp…bullets perforated the smartass gunman’s body. In a matter of seconds I twirled around my meat shield and positioned myself behind the assaulting gunman. So far he hadn’t notice that I was no longer standing in front of him since he was busy pouring lead into the man in front of me baaaaarp baaaarp baaarp….click…click. He had used up all his ammo which freed the other gunmen from his forced standing position. Now that the gunfire had stopped, his body slumped to the ground running red with blood.

The gunman in front of me was fumbling to reload his gun since he only had use of one of his hands. He was still sadly ignorant of the fact that I was behind him so I decided to take a little pity on him by tapping his shoulder. He turned around quickly releasing a loud gasp and lunged his rifle forward click…click.

“Out of bullets remember. Anyway did you know there are two hundred and six bones in the body? I already broke your arm but I can still break your fingers, hand, wrist, I could even dislocate and relocate your shoulder. Now that I’ve told you a little something about myself why don’t you tell me something like why were you waiting for us when that helicopter attack?”

  Chapter 13

It was kind of sad how I could no longer count on my fingers the number of times I had been knocked unconscious. Fortunately enough this was the first in a pretty long while, so I guess there was no reason to be upset or annoy or anything like that….well I had other reasons to be irritated. For starters there were a number of people around me I wasn’t sure how many since I hadn’t quite opened my eyes yet. Using my hearing I had mapped out the place and noted a good amount of people were nearby. I couldn’t quite get any useful information out of the idle chatter that occurred. Either because they really didn’t have much going on or knew at this point that I was faking being unconscious. If that was the case then I guess I’d better wake up and see what my new friends have in store for me.

I opened my eyes slowly allowing light to pour into my field of vison, everything was blurry at first then started to focus after a little while. Wherever I was being kept, happened to be very spacious and devoid of any real decorations actually this place looked like it was abandoned. As I craned my head around I could see that it was indeed an abandoned building. There were a number of desks and laptops, along with a random assortment of weapons. Once I finished surveying the surrounding area I decided to look at the ceiling which was pretty high up and had various sections missing which formed an impro
mptu skylight.

Once I finished looking around I set my sights in front of me, unexpectedly I immediately took note of a man standing in front of me. He had short brown hair and a thick beard which was attached to his sideburns. Other than that he looked like he was on vacation, he was wearing a tan shirt and colorful shorts along with slippers and sunglasses. I was honestly taken back a moment once I got a good look at him.

“I see you are finally awake.” The man spoke with a thick European accent.

My only response was rolling my eyes then I attempted to move my hands, that’s when I noticed that they were cuffed behind me that…zeeeeet

  “Aaaaaah.”

“Oh. Sorry about zat. You mustn’t be fidgety.”

Once I again I didn’t response to the man instead I looked behind me to see that I was sitting in front of a decently large pillar. So I couldn’t get a good look at my hands even so I pictured a large invisible hand gripping the cuffs behind me and crushing them…zeeeet zeeeeeet.

“SERIOUSLY.” I shouted the words in pain.

The man in front of me just shook his head before saying. “I probably should have warned you about that.”
