by Morgan Kelley

Chris stared at her. “Really? Now?”

  She laughed even harder.

  This was amazing.

This was exactly what she needed. All the stress was gone, and she felt alive.

Sex with her best friend was awesome. Did it rock their worlds? Maybe, maybe not, but they at least connected and shared something special.

“I’ll run to the store. There is no way I’m closing my eyes tonight without finishing this.”

She stopped him. “Chris, just fuck me already. It’s been a year. Let’s just do it.”

“Bare? Are you sure?” To him, that was the big no-no. As an ME, he saw what disease did. Then again, this was Elizabeth. She’d been chaste for the last year too.

  “Really?”

  “Yes, I trust you.”

He stared down into her icy blue eyes. He trusted her too. “If you’re sure,” he said.

  “I’m…”

She didn’t get to finish. Chris slid into her body, burying himself all the way to his base.

  They both moaned.

“Hard and fast?” he offered, giving her a kiss on the lips. “You said you liked option B. I really want to try out all the options, but now it seems like B would be perfect.”

She loved how he was analytical. It made her smile.

“I wouldn’t have it any other way,” she said as her legs wrapped around his hips, locking her to him.

Chris made love to her. While he tried to stay focused, it was so damn hard. The wet warmth of her body lured him into the act of mating.

  It was special.

  He’d never forget this day.

He could feel her body tightening down on his.

“Cum for me, Lyzee,” he whispered, as he continued driving himself into her body. This was probably the happiest moment of his life.

He was getting off with a sexy woman, he wasn’t sexually frustrated anymore, and he wasn’t going to lose his best friend in the process.

  This was awesome.

  She came again.

This was exactly what she needed. Her body was limber, she was happy, and she was focused.

Then she rolled, catching him off guard.

“Your turn,” she said, as she began riding him. “Buckle up, Orion. We’re about to have some fun.”

He watched her bounce on his dick. Her breasts were a sight to behold. With each slide down his dick, shocks rocketed through his body.

  This was perfect.

“I’m not going to last long,” he muttered. “I’m inexperienced, and there’s a sexy babe in my lap.”

“Good, because I’m going to come again,” she whispered, as she rode him hard.

Chris could feel it bubbling up, his balls tightened, and yet she kept riding.

“Lyzee, you better get off, I’m going to cum,” he muttered, trying to hold back.

“Cum with me, Christopher. God! Now!”

She slammed down on him one last time, forcing them both over the edge and into the pleasure.

They both erupted in one hell of an orgasm.

Chris poured into her in a wave of heat.

Elizabeth collapsed onto his chest and cuddled down into his arms as they wrapped around her.

  They floated.

  Finally, he spoke.

  “You were right and wrong.”

“About?” she asked, pulling the comforter over them to chase away the chill.

“That it wouldn’t be good. Oh, it was pretty damn good. I may smile for a month.”

  “But?”

“Will you marry me?” he asked.

  “Yeah, no.”

“And here was where you were right because I don’t want to marry you either,” Chris admitted. “I do like the sex. A lot.”

She rolled to her side to stare in his eyes. “Well, this was the part I was worried about before we did it. Now what? Did this just change everything?”

Chris knew this was going to likely get him killed. “Would it be so bad to keep this part but lose the boyfriend and girlfriend part?” he asked. “We’re both kind of married to our jobs.”

  She kissed him.

“And that’s why I love you. Charlie told me I should just have fun and live, but I didn’t want to lead you on. We’re not couple material.”

He disagreed. “Technically, who do you have dinner with?” he asked.

  “You.”

“Where do you spend your weekends?”

  “With you.”

“We’re already a couple, Lyzee. Maybe we just can be who we are and not worry about anything else. I don’t want to get married and have kids. I’m young. I’m not even in my thirties.”

  She got it.

“I don’t want to get married and have kids either.”

  “So…”

“Are you okay with this?” she asked. “I don’t know what to call it.”

  “Friends with benefits,” he stated.

  She pinched him hard.

“Shit! That’s going to leave a mark!” he said, laughing at the look on her face.

“That’s a horrible term. Pick a new one. If I ever hear it out of your mouth again, I will hurt you.”

  “Kissing cousins?” he asked laughing.

She snorted and cuddled down into his body. “You’re a goof, but I love you.”

“How about we go with just a couple?”

“A couple of what?” she teased.

“A couple of people who love their careers, need to feel at times, and happen to have amazing best friends who have their back.”

  “So, we’re a couple.”

“We’re happy. I think that’s the point,” Chris said. “I’m happy. Are you?”

  She thought about it.

“And there goes my ego,” he teased.

“I am very happy, Christopher,” she said, running her hand up and down his erection.

He stopped talking. “Sorry, I was getting happy all over again.”

She laughed. “Ah, there’s the one-track mind.”

“Honey, you’re touching my dick. There’s only one track that can lead to, so…”

Chris dropped a kiss to the crown of her head.

  “Well?”

“I think this could work—unless you call it friends with benefits. That will get you killed.”

  “Noted.”

He nuzzled her. “I have to be honest.”

  “Oh boy.”

He snorted. “You’ll be happy with this testimony I’m about to lay down.”

Her hand went to his chest, and she ran it back and forth. It was very calming.

“I’m new at sex. You’re the third person I’ve ever been with, and I like that I can learn from you.”

She started laughing. “You just called me a whore. I’m telling my daddy!”

He snorted. “No, I’m calling you my best friend, and now I’m calling you my teacher. Other women will break my heart. You won’t. I need you, Elizabeth. I may not ever get married, but I’ll always need you.”

She kissed him on the cheek.

  “I need you too, Newton.”

  And there it was.

They were the same as before, but they’d rolled around, got sweaty, and had some great sex.

  Together.

“We’ll still have dinner, sleep over, and do everything we were before the sex.”

She stared at him. “And if we meet someone?”

“Then I’ll be happy for you. We both know it won’t be me, Lyzee. You’re the catch.”

She kissed him to shut him up. “You’re a catch, Newton. I’m lucky to be in your life and sharing something so amazing with you. We’ll always be friends, and we’ll always be part of this. We’re a couple.”

He smiled. “And that’s why I need you. Being with you gives me courage.”

“Being with you gives me peace, Christopher. I stop worrying. I get to be me. I get to stop thinking about how shitty my life is right now.”

He was glad. Chris hated that she w
as wounded. He’d give anything to heal that. With time, maybe they could fix each other.

“We should have done this a while ago.”

  He was probably right.

“At least we’ll never be alone,” she offered.

  Exactly.

It was nice to have someone to comfort you when the world was a scary place. Elizabeth wasn’t ready to face it alone. She was still in her twenties, facing down crazies, and learning about who she was.

With Chris, she could be safe.

This gave her hope. One day, maybe she would find someone. Until then, she wasn’t alone.

“I like having someone to do this with,” he stated, “but we shouldn’t be broadcasting it around work. Let them talk, but we can’t confirm anything.”

  He was right.

Gabe, while he told her to go for it, would break them apart the second he smelled a relationship.

  She knew him.

He was sadistic, and he didn’t like Chris. He’d do it because of some stupid FBI rule. Plus, her reputation was tanked. If people thought he was dating her, they’d torment him. Elizabeth couldn’t let that happen.

“So we keep it on the DL? This never happened?” she asked.

“Yeah, I think we need to keep this private. I think that it’s no one’s business but ours.”

  “Agreed, Newton.”

  He hesitated.

  “What?”

“So, you’re really going to have sex with me again?” he asked. “You know, if we’re both just hanging out, and need to…?”

  “Get off?” she asked.

“That sounds so wrong. Are we insane? You’re beautiful. Why do I not want to marry you right now? Why am I not freaked out that I just shot a million little sperm into your body?”

She snorted. “Gee. Thanks. That didn’t sound really horrible.”

  “You know what I mean.”

“It’s probably because I’m safe. We all like feeling safe, loved, and protected.”

  And she did.

No one ever made her feel like this. Chris wouldn’t hurt her. She didn’t have to lie or pretend. He loved her for her. Still, next time, she was packing a box of condoms. In fact, she’d be giving him some for his birthday as a gag gift for the rest of his life.

  “So?” he asked.

Yeah, they could do this again if they kept it their secret.

“I wouldn’t mind these moments, as long as they don’t interfere with our friendship and with work. So yes, we can keep doing it, but we can’t talk about it outside of our bedrooms.”

  He was good with that.

“It’s like Fight Club,” she said.

“I don’t get it. What’s Fight Club, and why does that sound painful? Are you into bondage? Is that what you’re trying to tell me?” he asked, teasing his best friend.

She snorted. “We’ll watch it next weekend when I’m off. I have it at home. I’ll get you caught up on your movies.”

  He loved that best.

  They were still the same.

There would still be pizza and movies during a snowstorm or Chinese on a holiday when they both had nowhere to go.

  They had each other.

Together, they could get through this.

He held up his pinky. “We take this arrangement to our graves?” he asked.

“Even when we get old and married?” she asked.

“ESPECIALLY then. I’m a nerd. I know any man you marry will want to kick my ass. I can’t imagine having a wife, but I doubt she’ll be badass like you.”

She snorted. “I’m never getting married. I’m a tough pill to swallow.”

Chris didn’t buy that one bit.

“Let’s just have fun together. Who knows where it will lead? We don’t need to get married to be happy and productive.”

Elizabeth felt that way too. She had him. Chris would keep the demons at bay until the man she was meant to be with found her.

  Elizabeth had to believe that.

  Or he’d be the one.

  Time would tell.

She kissed him on the cheek and then pinky swore with him. “This is our private thing. Forever—no matter what.”

  “Deal.”

  He cuddled with her.

“You’re still my soul mate,” he said. “On some deep, emotional level, you’re my other half.”

  “Mine too. You’re my brother.”

“That’s exactly what I was feeling. See?” he said.

  She did.

“Oh, and you just fucked your brother. You’re such a pervert,” he teased.

She pinched him. “I didn’t see you shying away from my clitoris, Christopher.”

“I’m not an idiot. That was one of my favorite parts.”

  She laughed.

“So we’re okay?” he asked. “And if we fall in love with other people, we can still have our friendship and love for each other?”

  He was worried about that.

Chris couldn’t lose her either. No one got him quite like Elizabeth. He meant what he said. She was made to be part of his life.

“I will love you forever, Christopher. You’re my best friend. We will have this love twenty years from now. This was just sex. What we have is more. If you fall in love and want to date, I want you to. I hope you’ll support me too.”

“I will. I’ll be your biggest cheerleader. And if we’re old and wrinkly and we can’t find someone…?”

“We’ll always have us. Two old Feds knocking boots with the best of them.”

He laughed. “I’m good with that.”

“Me too. My clit had cobwebs. I feel a million times better now that I'm destressed.”

“I thought it was hair. My bad.”

She laughed and hugged him. “And that’s why I love you, Newton. You get me.”

He touched her cheek. “I love you too. Thank you for making today less hellish than it had been, and I’m sorry I ditched you for her.”

“Then maybe this wouldn’t have happened. If she didn’t do what she did, we wouldn’t have this moment together.”

“Good point. I’ll call her up and thank her for handcuffing me to my headboard, humiliating me, and leaving me here so someone could see my dick.”

  “It’s a nice dick.”

He started laughing. “Well, there’s that.”

She was amused. “I’ll find her and get your shit back,” she stated.

“I don’t care. I got this, and trust me when I say this moment with you was worth it all—even my father’s watch.”

She kissed him. “Can I sleep over?” she asked. “I’m too beat to walk back home.”

  “Here or my spare room?”

She thought about it. He’d had his dick in her body, so why sleep in another bed?

“Here. I have a long day tomorrow.”

“Okay, honey. Let’s get some sleep.”

They cuddled down and closed their eyes. While some people would be appalled by this kind of thing, they weren’t. There was nothing wrong with loving someone with no strings attached.

  Were they friends with benefits?

  Yes.

Would they keep it private between them?

  Absolutely.

  Would it lead to more?

  Maybe.

They had something special, and that was all that mattered to either of them. When you looked at death all day, you had to find a way to survive it.

  Chris had found his way.

  It was her.

  Elizabeth had found her way.

  It was him.

  She’d found her brother.

  Her best friend.

And in the process, they redefined soul mate. In DC, neither would survive without backup.

  They were it.

  Chapter Ten

  Sunday Morning

I t had been a very long night.

At five-oh-five in the morning, Livy Rothschild delivered a miracle. She finally pushed out her child, and Amelia Elizabeth Rothschild ca
me screaming into the world.

  And she was beautiful.

She had a lot of hair, sticking up all over the place. She reminded her parents of a little troll doll.

And she was gorgeous like her mother.

As they checked her out, Gabe stood there, his eyes full of tears. He watched as they cleaned off the little child, putting her into the tiny knit hat.

She was a pink, screaming angel.

  He was speechless.

“Is she okay?” Livy asked from the bed. She was exhausted, and it had been a battle to get her daughter to leave the womb.

“She’s perfect,” the nurse said. “Give me one minute to check her vitals, and I’ll give you your daughter.”

  Gabe moved to her side.

  “You did so good, Livy.”

He was astounded by the whole thing. He watched as his wife, the strongest woman he knew, gave birth to a miracle. It was insane.

  It put life into perspective.

  She made a little person.

  “That was so difficult.”

He knew what she meant. The whole process had been brutal. From the minute that he found out she was pregnant, and up to the moment that they got the paternity test back from the amniocentesis, it had been a struggle.

Amelia had made them work for it.

  And it was worth it.

“You got through it. You’re tougher than any woman I know.”

  “Gabriel.”

He stopped her. “Don’t, Olivia. It’s a new day. Today is Amelia’s birthday, and we’re not going to do this. I’ve tolerated a lot, but I’m stopping this here.”

  She closed her mouth.

Another nurse came in, and she was carrying the paperwork. “We need to fill out her birth certificate.”

“Her name is Amelia Elizabeth Rothschild,” Gabe said.

  “Mother?”

  “Oliva Rothschild.”

  “Father?” she asked.

  Gabe didn’t hesitate. “Gabriel Rothschild.”

She scribbled in the information. “Sign here,” she said. “Congrats on your child. She’s absolutely beautiful.”

Yes, despite it all, she was.

“Can I hold my daughter?” Gabe asked, as Livy signed the birth certificate.

The other nurse carried her over to him. “Here you go, Deputy Director.”

He cuddled her in his big arms. “Hello, sweetheart. I love you so much. I’ve loved you since the day I found out about you. You’re going to have an amazing life. I’m blessed to have you as my little girl.”
