Robert smiled. “Good. That’s good. Maybe it is a good thing that Fallen is gone. A man who keeps proof of his actions is no good to our cause. Destroy the list and keep me informed of everything my grandson might be up to. I know him and his kind. He will try to stop us, but no male is going to stop this.”
“Yes, sir.”
Robert hung up the phone and put it down on the end table next to the chair he sat in. He turned his old eyes upon the head of the new order who sat behind a big glass desk.
“We are at war, Vanderburg,” their leader stated.
“Yes we are,” Robert agreed.
“And it’s time for you to play the game differently.”
“I don’t understand.”
“We can’t form ourselves if others take us out, one by one. I need to know what your grandson knows, and in order for this to happen, both sides need to play with the new rules that are laid out for us. Two humans are hunting us, and that is unacceptable.”
“I agree.”
“The time has come for you to show how loyal you are to our cause. The hunted now needs to become the hunter, and all that get in our way will be crushed at our heels.” Robert nodded his head in agreement. “Including your grandsons.” The air in the room suddenly became thick and his throat dry. “Blood means everything to me, Vanderburg, but if blood turns on blood then the water becomes thicker. Agreed?”
Robert swallowed hard and met the cold stare of his leader. “I understand what you’re saying.”
“Good. Then we understand each other and I can put you in charge with his next mission without worrying about where your loyalty stands.” The man shoved a large envelope on the table toward Robert. “I know I won’t be disappointed.”
Robert took the envelope. He opened it, brought out the photos, and started looking at each one. He knew a few of the young men. Knew that they were working together to stop the banning of the new Cabinet. He also knew what his job would be; to stop each and every one of them.
“If one of your grandsons gets in the way, Vanderburg, I expect you to do the right thing,” his leader stated. “The only reason their names aren’t in there with the others is out of your loyalty. They cross the line, it will cost them their lives.”
As much as he did care for his grandsons, Robert’s loyalty was with this new order, and he had no problem in nodding his head, standing up and agreeing. “If they cross me it will be their lives. Anything for our Cabinet.
“Good. Now get to work.”
