Silence seemed to surround us after that and Julian sat across from me, his eyebrows furrowed, as if he was contemplating something. “Does love really make a person sound that incredibly sappy?”
I chuckled and stood up, finishing my coffee and then patting my brother’s back. “Let’s see if you can still act cool when you’re the one in love.”
Julian snorted. “As if.”
We’ll see, Jules.
I made my way upstairs, back to my room and just as I closed the door, I heard Alexa sniffling. My eyebrows furrowed in confusion as I crawled next to her in bed. “Lexi?”
She turned to face me, her eyes were closed tight but I could see the tears staining her cheeks. She must’ve woken up since she was already back in her clothes. “Are you crying?”
Her eyes opened and slowly she stared back at me. “You say you suck with words but you make me cry each time you open your damn mouth.”
I couldn’t help but chuckle. “Did you eavesdrop on my conversation with Julian?”
“I woke up and you weren’t here,” she pouted, looking like a little kid when she did it. I chuckled and pecked her lightly on the lips. “Did you mean that?”
I gave her a look. “How many times do I have to reassure you?”
Alexa grinned and bit her bottom lip and then both her hands cupped my face. Her hazel eyes bore into mine and the things that I couldn’t read before were clear to me now. Love. She had tried to restrain herself from falling in love with me but it had only backfired. “I love you, Everett Hudson.”
Three words. Say it. “I love you.”
And our lips met again and in the same way that it did the first time that she kissed me, time just stopped and now I knew why.
Because I had found the one my soul loved.
