“We need to shift,” Li says. “We should be able to see better in the dark in our leopard forms.”
“Ero and I will shift,” Roan says. “You carry Annalise and our things, and we’ll lead the way.”
“Okay.”
I wonder how they’re going to accomplish this as Li gathers their belongings into one of the bags and slings them over his shoulder.
“Okay, Little Bird, into my arms.”
I reach out for him in the dark and his hand finds mine. Li carefully lifts me, and then we set off slowly through the darkness, following the soft mews of two giant leopards as they lead the way.
It seems like an eternity before we finally see a light at the end of the tunnel. Roan and Ero shift back into men as soon as there’s enough light to continue on safely. As we draw closer to the light, I can see that it’s coming from small cracks in a thick, wooden door.
“It’s locked,” Roan says as we near it.
“Barely,” Ero says, grabbing the lock in one hand and yanking it off with ease.
“Ero,” I gasp in shock. “That was to help keep people out.”
“Yeah, well the emperor should have remembered to give us a key, then,” Ero says.
“He did,” Li sighs, pulling a key out of one of his pockets.
“Oh, well. Too late now,” Ero says with a shrug.
Turning back to the door, he pulls it open and we step out into the gray light of early morning. But no sooner are we outside and taking in deep breaths of fresh air than a twig snaps nearby.
Li holds me tight against his chest while Roan and Ero step closer beside us as we wait to see the sound. A moment later, a white fox jumps out of a bush and runs off into the forest, and we all sigh with relief.
“I suppose we’re off to find a dragon, then,” Ero says.
Li turns and looks back at the city under attack in the distance.
“Li,” I say softly, “if we don’t hurry, the whole world will look like that before we know it.”
Li looks down at me with a soft smile. “You’re right, Little Bird. Let’s go.”
And with that, we race off in search of a dragon.
