“This is Blake’s time, they will let you in when they’re ready.”
Grady looked at Hines who shrugged and then smiled. Grady smiled back. They couldn’t have known their timing was bad on an epic scale, but Marine One was sitting outside, waiting on them. The country had waited a week after polling was closed to tally the counts, they could wait another half hour, hour…
Time passed like molasses, and then two of the three doctors came out and headed toward the basement where a makeshift bathroom had been set up for them to use, in Bobby and Weston’s old room. They ignored calls for information and pretended not to even hear anything.
“Tonight’s episode of Rebel Radio will have one Col. Grady and Governor Hines here with us at the Homestead to announce the next President of the United States of America. There is a lot more going on at the Homestead, so we’re delaying the broadcast until we have more news. Over,” David said into the mic.
There was immediate feedback and lots of well wishes over the air, but that lasted thirty seconds, and then everyone went back to radio silence to wait and see what it was.
Duncan was beside himself, sick of waiting and was getting to his feet, not letting Lisa make him sit this time when the bedroom door opened again and Blake walked out. Grady had been reading over the piece of paper and then took the microphone from David.
“This is Col. Grady, commander of the US Armed Forces. An election was held two weeks ago, and we’re here to introduce to you, the winner, by an almost unanimous vote,” he paused, and Hines was grinning ear to ear.
Blake walked to both men, a little bit of blood on his cheek and on his shirt, smiling broadly.
“Is everything okay?” Lisa asked him.
Blake nodded. That was when Grady handed him the sheet of paper he’d been holding. Blake read it, his eyes going from Grady to Hines and back to Grady, who was grinning.
“I’d like to present to you, the President of the United States of America, Blake Jackson!” Grady announced.
“He wasn’t even on the ballot,” Bobby whispered, and somebody kicked him.
“Say something, Blake,” Grady said, holding the transmit button down for him.
“It’s a girl,” Blake said, and then shouted, “It’s a GIRL!”
