His Wicked Charm Page 39

by Candace Camp

It took them some time to get the three remaining men trussed up and stowed in the back of the kidnappers’ own wagon. The duchess offered to drive the wagon back to London, which did not come as a surprise to any of her children. They had long been convinced that the duchess could do anything she set her mind on. Lilah, however, seemed somewhat taken aback.

As they left the house, Emmeline put her arm around Thisbe’s waist. “I was so proud of you today.”

“I was scared silly,” Thisbe confessed.

  “We all were.”

  “Not you.”

“Of course I was frightened. It would have been foolish not to be in that situation, and I hope I’m not foolish.”

“No one could tell you were frightened.”

“Years of practice, my dear.” Her mother smiled. “In my experience, if one pretends courage well enough, it turns into reality.”

“Still, I think I prefer my less adventurous life in the laboratory.” And Desmond. Most of all, she wanted to be with Desmond.

Thisbe thought of him waiting at home for her, quiet and steady. She had asked him this morning if he ever regretted marrying her, if he wished for a different life, a different wife. There was no need, she knew, to pose the question to herself. Always, in every way, Desmond was her beloved.

She loved her family, but Desmond was her lodestar, her center, and all she needed right now was to be with him.

With a smile, Thisbe turned toward the waiting carriage. And started home.
