Then, another wolf came forward, this one shifting into a dark haired, scowling young man who said, "So shall I."

Claire knew him, as well. His name was Shard.

She scanned the wolves for the polite blond named Flair, but then reminded herself that he had gone back to the city with Braze and the rest of the urban wolves.

Then another broke away from the rest, one Claire did not know.

  "Me, too."

  "And I," said another.

Another wolf followed, then another and the next, until soon the volunteers numbered at least twenty and Clash nodded his approval.

He looked down to Claire and said, "Trust me, Claire. Remember what I told you and no matter what happens, don't be afraid."

Without waiting for Claire to respond, Clash turned to the wolves who had answered his call.

"We have all heard the tales. Today, we shall test the truth of them."

There was no warning as three wolves broke into a loping run, coming at Clash from three different directions.

They closed and three jaws snapped down on their leader's flesh before leaping away again.

Claire screamed, then her eyes flew wide as she saw that Clash did nothing to defend himself and held to his human form.

The other wolves circled in, tightening the noose, before several broke away once more to launch themselves at the shifter standing in their midst.

Their jaws clamped down and while there was some blood, Claire did not see a wrenching away of flesh, but rather the deep imprints of toothy jaws emblazoned upon the werewolf's skin.

Still others came, snapping and biting, and Claire saw Clash begin to waver. His head jerked from side to side, his lips peeled back, and gradually the wolf within him forced itself forward.

The other wolves did not relent and it was not long until Clash had shifted fully back to wolf. His eyes were no longer closed in the effort he had made earlier to remain calm. Instead, he spun and whirled, fighting off the onslaught he had called down upon himself.

One of the wolves, a large, black furred beast, leaped onto Clash's bristling back. The others took it as some sort of signal as many biting jaws leaned in to clamp down upon their leader's flesh.

If Claire had thought she had seen wild beasts with a potential for terrible violence earlier, nothing had prepared her for the crazed savage that Clash became then. She heard his jaws biting down into empty air, the sound a terrible clacking as his targets feinted away. Saliva foamed and splattered from his mouth as he twisted in every direction and still the others did not relent.

The sounds they made as they fought were terrible, as well, with deep growls and snarls that came from all around her.

Slowly, they forced Clash back, ever closer to Claire, their biting increasing in frequency as they pounded into Clash over and over again.

Finally, he was driven back to where his furred body nearly pressed against Claire and it was all she could do to hold still, despite the terror caused by the battling wolves.

Clash lashed out, swinging his great head from side to side. His eyes had gone blood red as his rage and bloodlust scattered whatever had been human within him to dust.

In a final, concerted effort, four wolves came at him, running shoulder to shoulder, jaws wide.

Clash was forced back another half step and in the instant that his furred back made contact with Claire, he whirled and, blindly, his great jaws clamped down onto her thigh.

Claire screamed. Her throat opened in a shriek as the pain hit her, flowing up her leg to slam into her mind like a lightening strike.

The pressure exerted by Clash's fanged jaws was immense and she could feel that his teeth had sunken in deeply with some of them grating upon bone. Suddenly, Claire was sure that she was about to lose her leg and she began to kick with her other limb at the long muzzle of the wolf who had professed to take her into his protection.

  Be still, child.

The voice that spoke in her mind said the words slowly. It was a voice that seemed unused to forming words, as if it had nearly forgotten how to speak in the way of men.

The pain will not last. Be...still.

And then the presence was gone. Hearing it, Claire had calmed, straining to hear what else it might say, then the agony of the iron jawed grip upon her thigh came back to her.

Suddenly, other jaws clamped down upon her. There were wolves pinning each of her hands, and two others who had taken her ankles into their mouths.

Dimly, Claire came to understand that the onslaught against Clash had ceased with the wolves' efforts now turned to drawing Claire's arms and legs spread wide.

She felt fur brushing the interior of her legs then saw the black wolf looking down at her and panting heavily with its long tongue lolling from between sharp, white teeth.

The wolf began shifting, human features forming in the wolf's dark skin, and without a word the half-transformed man forced his cock inside her.

Claire felt him enter and with him there was a surge of heat that rippled through her.

She looked down past the wolf thrusting in to her cunt, to the maddened creature biting down upon her thigh. There were rivulets of blood seeping from around the teeth buried in her flesh and Claire saw the beast's jaw muscles bunching from time to time.

He reminded her of a lion who had latched on to a doomed prey animal, jaws holding tight in the struggle between life and death. It was the eternal bargain between hunter and prey, life for the killer at the expense of his target's death.

But from Clash's reddened eyes, she saw tears slipping down to wet his jowls; as if he found what he did tragic but was helpless to stop himself.

The black wolf slammed into her, his cock pounding in deeply and before Claire could more than think, her body began to respond. She arched off the ground and she heard bestial sounds in her ears. Grunts and snarls, although the black wolf fucked her in silence.

His pace quickened as he pounded into her and as Claire began to feel herself tighten deep in her guts, the wolf pulled out of her, nearly fully transformed to animal once more.

Claire whined as he left her, then another wolf came to take his place.

It was Rend. The young man had difficulty meeting Claire's eyes as he pushed himself in between her legs. Instead, he dropped his head down to nuzzle at her breasts before taking a nipple into his mouth, his tongue rolling across the tip.

Claire moaned and the sound mingled with a woman's desire and a bitch's heat. The young wolf pulled back from her breasts and with confidence, his cock found its way home.

He rode her as a human, not wavering into a wolf until Claire was nearly screaming in ecstasy, the pounding drumbeat of pain timed to her heart utterly forgotten. At the end, Rend shifted to wolf as he withdrew from her and Claire's scream of passion twisted to blood red anger as her hips sought to hold him still.

Another wolf came to take his place and he fucked her even harder. She did not recognize him, but their faces were blending, becoming one animal as they rode her up to the crest of an orgasm before slipping away and denying her release.

One after another, they pounded into her, never coming nor allowing Claire her own satisfaction, until finally she became a wild thing, spitting and snarling as they left her, growling in fury as another wolf came to take his place only to deny her once more.

Claire's nipples stood out in crinkled points. Her abdomen was slick in perspiration as she did what she could to flex hard against each wolf that came to fuck her.

It went on until she became mindless, a thing of bestial desire teetering on the knife's edge of ecstasy and the pain of never reaching the bleeding, aching point.

Then, a last wolf came to stand over her. This one was huge with blood streaking its fur. There were red stains running down from its mouth and Claire saw that its teeth were tinged in pink.

This last wolf stood over her, looking deeply into her eyes before he brought himself to bear. Then, he slipped his cock forward, to just with
in Claire's pussy lips, but no further, all the while with his amber gaze never leaving her own.

She growled and bucked, desperate to seize him and force him inside her.

Claire could feel the ground shake under her, as if the earth itself had shrugged and suddenly her limbs were released.

In an unthinking frenzy, she wrapped her legs around the wolf and with a strength she would not have believed herself possible, she drove herself down to spear the wolf's cock firmly inside.

They rolled across the ground, the beast's growls met with Claire's own snarls and she barely registered the sounds of battle and the rising cries of the shifters from all around them.

All that mattered was that her wolf fuck her hard and long, bringing them both to satisfaction.

His back arched once, then twice, then, at last he abandoned himself as he hammered his cock into her.

Claire arched back as she burned, wolf bitten and vampire kissed. She was riding waves of dark flame that crackled across her soul. The world around her had grown dim and hazy, the wolves become formless yet glowing like small candles through ancient panes of rippled glass.

Her eyes rolled in her head as the ground trembled beneath her and the wolf. Claire saw without seeing, nothing making sense as the cock inside her drove itself home over and over again.

There was screaming and bestial growls as the wolf fucked her, then a voice rang out.

"Pack Leader! We are attacked! The vampire lord is upon us."

The wolf locked between Claire's legs looked up and its eyes registered the words. With a shudder, the wolf began to shift while Claire shrieked with rage as her release was about to be stolen away yet again.

Clash shook himself then he seized Claire's face between two strong hands.

"Look at me, Claire! Look at me!"

He grimaced then drew back a hand and struck her hard across the jaw. Claire's eyes continued to roll, the whites showing as she contorted underneath him in the throes of the ritual. Her mind was filled with dark, winged beings that strode forward snuffing out the candle flames of wolves, dealing out death with every blow. Her vision was filled with black fire and behind it, there were rolling wheels blazing with a puissance that simply waited, oblivious and doing nothing.

Clash struck her again and again until, at last, Claire fixed him in her sight, her eyes finally focused upon his bruised and bloodied face.

He dropped his head down and nuzzled her cheek, saying, "Beautiful Claire, I am sorry. I truly am, but we have run out of time."

She struggled to form coherent words, clearing her throat before croaking, "What is it, Clash? What is happening?"

He pulled back from her and she felt his member slip from inside her with bitter regret.

"The blood drinkers' master is among us, come to take back what we have stolen. The pack rallies, but we are no match for a one who walks among us yet invisible to our eyes. His power is too great."

Claire shook her head from side to side as she pushed herself upright upon shaking hands.

"This can't be right," she said, "I know it and it isn't supposed to go like this."

Clash grinned ruefully and replied, "I must leave you now, Claire. We will expend ourselves against the Seraphim, even if it is useless. Only our lost father, Galgallin, could save us now."

The sounds of battle and dying wolves grew closer with each second. The scent of spilled blood washed over them both, hot and thick as it ran across the dry ground of the clearing.

"But that's just it, Clash," Claire said as she reached for his arm, gripping him tight with trembling fingers.

"You don't need to die. None of you do."

Without hope, Clash sighed and said, "What do you mean?"

Claire did not hesitate as she said, "Galgallin's not lost. I know where he is...."

  Redeemed by the Conqueror

"What do you mean, Claire? How can you possibly know where Galgallin is to be found?"

Clash was slipping back and forth from wolf form to man, as if the battle that raged just at the periphery of the clearing drew his savage warrior nature even while he remained at Claire's side, the tantalizing phrase that she had just uttered still hanging in the air.

Galgallin's not lost. I know where he is....

She had looked up at him as he clenched his fists and he saw the beauty shining in her eyes as she smiled and opened her mouth to tell him what the werewolves had yearned to hear for hundreds of years.

A hollow boom rang out, and then as if from the pages of a children's story, a giant strode from the trees. His flesh was like finely veined marble, white and pure, lending him the air of a carefully wrought statue. The giant stood more than eight feet in height, his massive arms cradling the snapped off trunk of a young oak. His wrists were encircled with thick, iron manacles and from one of these dangled a short length of heavy chain.

"Kabiel!" he roared as he marched, unflinching, toward the point around which the wolves were amassed. They snapped and snarled at something invisible in their midst and from time to time, a few of them would rush toward the center of their attention, only to be felled as unseen blows rained down to crush the lives from the hapless beasts.

Then, as if catching her scent in the wind, the giant's head swiveled toward Claire. Seeing the werewolf at her side, his fists clenched and menacing, the stone-like being abruptly changed course and shifted the broken tree in his grasp to hold it like an enormous club.

"Claire. Is this one friend or foe?" he said, his voice as cavernous as ever. His blank eyes shifted from her to the werewolf and Claire could see wisps of steam or smoke wafting up from the giant's shoulders.

"Wait. Are you burning?" she asked

The giant grinned at her question, his lips pulling back to reveal long, gleaming fangs.

"As I told you, Claire, after my long years imprisonment, daylight can no longer hurt me. Whatever part of me that was in conflict with the light has long since been burned away. I am Nephilim, the son of a Seraph, and what little impurity remains...smolders."

Then, it was the werewolf's turn to come to Claire's defense.

"Stone creature, turn aside or I shall tear the living heart from your chest. I will allow no hurt to this woman."

The giant nodded, his smile still present but fading as he turned to look back at the battling wolves.

"Friend, then. That is well," he said, "Now, if you would see her in security, let us be allies for the lord of vampires has come to take her back to his demesne."

Clash shrugged and said, "Separately, we cannot win, but perhaps together, there is some chance."

"You misunderstand, wolf. I mean for you to leave here with her. Seek out some hiding place while I do what I can to hinder the Seraph. I do not guarantee the outcome of that contest, but I will give you the time to be away with her."

A low growl was the wolf's answer.

"I am no coward, giant. Wolves do not run while allowing others to fight their battles for them."

Except that the giant had already turned away, hefting the log in his hands as he went to join the fray between the wolves and the invisible being that slew them relentlessly.

Claire seized the wolf's arm and said, "Wait, Clash. Daniel is a noble person. I know him and if anyone can pit himself against that vampire lord, it's him."

"But, Claire," replied the wolf, "Don't you see? I have followed my instincts and it has all come to ruin. I knew the Seraph would come for you. Braze knew it, as well...."

  Clash shook his head sadly.

"I have but one thing left to do, that which wolves have always done...go to battle, even if it will mean my death."

There was a sudden silence as the wolves fighting for their lives hesitated over the giant that forced his way among them.

Claire closed her eyes then, wishing to see with the sight that revealed the dark angels, even against their will. There, in the middle of the fray, was the lord of vampires, Kabiel, a fallen Seraph. He burned in black flames and
large, dark feathered wings sprouted from his back. The wolves closest to him lunged and Claire watched, horrified, as Kabiel seized one after the other to either wrench a neck to the point of breaking, or to simply hammer down with a closed fist upon an animal's head. His violence seemed to be without effort, his strength terrifying as he extinguished the candle flames of the wolves' lives one after another.

Then came Daniel, Kabiel's son to a woman before he had turned entirely to shadow and the creation of those creatures known as vampires. The giant was a Nephilim, those beings created from the angel's desire of human women, and Daniel also burned with the black flames of his father, while he had no wings.

The oak log whistled as Daniel swung it over the heads of wolves, and just before it struck him, Kabiel managed to raise a single arm against it. The log hit the Seraph with a force that must have been staggering, but the fallen angel held fast while the wood burst into fragments that flew in all directions.

To Claire's eyes, it was if the log simply exploded.

With no break in his momentum, Daniel came at his father, striking out at him with his fists.

He hammered down a flurry of blows, nearly too fast to see, and it was these that finally forced the Seraph back a single step, then two.

It was if he wanted to strike him for each year he had spent imprisoned upon his tower top and Claire opened her eyes to see Daniel struggling with his invisible foe. Then, from the corner of her vision, she saw Clash streak forward, now transformed into a hulking wolf.

Seeing him come to join them, the other wolves shrank back from the giant and the Seraph, choosing, instead, to regroup around their leader.

Claire screamed, her throat raw, trying to tell them to stop.

Then, moving like a single beast, rallied around Clash, the pack came back to the assault.

They hammered into the giant and his enemy, their great jaws biting down on the invisible being. Only this time, they did it in perfect silence, as if Clash had somehow commanded it so.

And there was no sound as an invisible leg kicked out, sending a wolf flying to land lifeless and still.
