  Notes

It is proper to speak between gentle knights / Of all the good one thinks of a lyrical play / Penned by a crimson eminence so wonderfully inspired / That nothing in this world could ever be its equal. / The rapier in the cold morning quickly decides / And the oaf’s face soon lies in the mud.

But at long last I woke up yawning / At the end of that wretched play; / Only Morpheus’ arms had saved me / From the deadly boredom engulfing me. / The rapier in the cold morning quickly decides / And the lout’s face soon lies in the mud.

Today with my sword, for a Duke’s honor, / In order to protect dubious glory, / Sainte-Claire and I shall meet / And on the battlefield one of us will fall. / The rapier in the cold morning quickly decides / And the boor’s face soon lies in the mud.

Historical records indicate that some members of the Sainte-Claire family later shortened their name to Saint-Clair during the French Revolution, when Louis-Jean de Sainte-Claire, a friend of the notorious Sir Percy Blakeney, helped saved numerous members of the French aristocracy from the blade of the guillotine.

Eclipse of May 14, 1337 BC.
