The Greenhouse Effect Page 9

by Michael Drake

After scooping a spoonful of tuna salad for Maow, they both ran back down the stairs, through the shimmering door and on to the second, shorter hallway that led to Mei's safe house. It was there that they found Poo who had decided it was time to go find out where Maow had run off to and was none too happy for being left sleeping by herself. Mei led the cats up to their greenhouse and with some fresh dry food was able to console the rebuffed Poo. While the cats ate, she settled herself into a chair next to Larry who was busy wrapping up a fly with webbing in preparation for his own meal.

Larry stopped what he was doing when he saw Mei and scuttled over the tabletop until he was right up next to her.

“I think I know where the hidden hallway is downstairs!” shouted Larry with excitement.

While Larry's shout still sounded like an AM radio on the lowest volume. Mei could tell he was excited. She shared in his joy by giving a ‘Whoop!’ at the top of her lungs. This sent poor Poo straight up from her food dish in a terrified leap with Maow finding shelter under the second chair. Looking chagrinned, Mei’s shout changed to laughter and she bent down to pacify the cats.

Once the cats were settled again Larry continued his revelation.

“I’m pretty sure it will be at the end of the hallway the same as at Frankie’s,” he told her excitedly. Mei promised Larry she would find it and dashed down the stairs.

It was less than a minute and Mei was back up in the greenhouse announcing to Larry that she indeed found the door to the third hidden hallway. She gave an excited update to the rest of the group through NORA and the other CC’s.
