“Ah it’s that couple whose always fighting, drives me crazy.”
Beth looked at Silma then paused for a moment thinking something over. “Let me go talk to them see what the problem is?”
“What? No leave em be and if anybody is gonna go talk to em it’s gonna be me.” Silma jabbed a thumb into her shoulder to drive the point across. Beth had a stern look on her face but softened for a moment as Silma stared her down. Before Beth could say another word Silma raised her hand signaling And that’s the end of that. Beth smiled to herself for a moment while the T.V played some random toy commercial.
“How many more soap operas?” Beth mouthed to herself.
Silma turned toward the T.V as the starting for another soap opera started to play.
“Oh Beth…Beth this one’s my favorite.” Silma exclaimed while fishing for Beth’s hand. Beth smiled lightly then reached for Silma’s hand. There was another thud from the ceiling above which made Beth decide she was definitely going to have a talk with the upstairs neighbors…right after she went to the bathroom.
“Excuse me. I’ll be right back.”
Beth got up and walked behind the couch to avoid walking in front of the screen and upsetting Silma. Ding…ding, Silma blinked for a moment then headed for the door.
“Who is it?” She asked.
Ding…ding. Beth paused by the hallway as she watched Silma head to the door. She listened quietly noticing the yelling from upstairs had abruptly stopped. All was quiet except for the ring of the doorbell, something seemed off, Beth could feel it in her stomach.
“Silvia wait.”
Silma stopped and looked at Beth blinking with curiosity, a few seconds passed by then a minute and nothing happened. Beth put her head down and sighed.
“It was nothing just nerves.”
Silma nodded her head signaling she understood just before she resumed her course toward the door which was a few inches away. She was coming in from the right when all of a sudden…Boom the middle of the door splintered as shotgun bullets burst through spreading out inside the room. Three of which manage to graze Silma knocking her to the ground. Beth was startled at first, it took three seconds for the adrenaline to kick in and for Beth to react.
“Silvia! Silvia!” She yelled.
Baaaaarp baaaaarp baaaarp gunfire rain down from the ceiling drilling through the couch and TV. Beth’s focus zipped from the ceiling to the random man armed with a shotgun entering the room. He looked like a mugger wearing a black beanie over his face with eye holes cut out. Beth pressed her back against the hallway wall just before the man cocked his shotgun and fired shredding through the back wall of Silma’s apartment.
“What the hell guys? We were suppose to come in from the front door what the fuck you doing up there?”
“What you mean the front door, we said ceiling. Did you guys hear ceiling?”
Beth remained quiet while the armed man talked to his fellow co-conspirators, this was planned she thought to herself. That wasn’t important, how was she going to get out of this, it wasn’t like she was in fighting shape, she was going to have to think her way out of this. Beth took a deep breath then reach into her pocket for something that she could use. The only thing that she found was a cellphone.
“Is she dead yet?” A random voice from above yelled.
“Who the old lady. We aint getting paid to ice no old lady.”
“No you idiot. The red head. Is the red head dead yet?”
There was a brief silence for a moment then the sound of a shotgun being cocked Boom…booom…booom. Beth cringed as each shotgun blast shredded through a portion of the wall. Once the shots stopped Beth took a calming breath to prevent herself from becoming too tense. She needed to be as calm and possible, she didn’t have the leisure of being scared or nervous her life depended on it.
“Yo red, you dead yet…wait if she’s dead then she not gon…”
A swoosh sound burst into the air just before a loud thud, Beth waited for a moment then moved as fast as she could. When she did she heard the other gunmen call out to their friend, who had been knocked unconscious by a cellphone. It took them just a few seconds to realize that Beth was on the move once they did they opened fire. Baaarp baaaarp baaaarp, Beth evaded as best as she could getting grazed a few times before she jumped toward the shotgun on the ground. Time seemed to slow down for Beth as she turned in the air landing on her back, it wasn’t a pleasant landing but she was right next to the shotgun so it worked out. Without a single thought in her mind other than payback she aimed the shotgun at the ceiling and fired twice. The ceiling caved in in an instant, three gunmen fell hitting the floor, they laid still for a moment until they realized what happened but then it was too late.
“Reach for those guns and I’ll spray the inside of your heads on the wall. We got that clear.”
The guys didn’t say anything so Beth cocked the shotgun. They nodded in agreement and then Beth asked them to politely slide their guns over to her which they did.
“Now get up, slowly.”
The three gunmen got up with their hands raised into the air, Beth took a few steps forward until she was in front of the couch.
“You fellas have a seat.”
With that she pushed the couch with her foot using as much force as she could muster, causing the couch to slide across the room as if the floor was ice. The gunmen couldn’t react fast enough as the couch hit them and pinned them to the wall. There were howls of pain but Beth didn’t pay them any attention instead she took the beanie off the first gunman and torn off some of his shirt as well as retrieve her cellphone while heading over to Silma.
“I’m fine Beth just startled.”
Beth ignored Silma’s statement then instructed her to apply pressure to her wounds. Once she finished Beth dial her phone which surprisingly still worked.
“Hello, I need an ambulance, Silma has been shot, oh I’m sorry my grandmother was shot.” Beth stumbled on the word my but she didn’t make a big deal out of it.
Once the phone call ended Beth turned her attention to the three gunmen who were stuck to the wall.
“Now I’m gonna say this once. As you can see I’m a pregnant lady so that means I’m kinda hormonal and all. So I am going to ask you some questions and if you don’t give me straight answers there’s no telling what could happen.”
Just before finishing her sentence Beth had grabbed hold of the shotgun and snapped it in half. The gunmen swallowed as Beth moved a bit closer to them.
“Are you guys with Prometheus?”
“Who the fu…no we are not with Prome…Prrometh the guys you said.”
Beth glared at the man for a moment. “Why’d you come after me and my grandmother?”
The three of them looked at each other wondering if they should answer Beth or not when she cleared her throat.
“We…we were hired to take you and some other guys out.”
Beth looked at them for a moment. “Who hired you? What did they look like?”
“Some old dude kinda look like a professor or something.”
“Last question how much did he pay you?”
“Well that’s the thing we have gotten paid anything it’s more like a what you may call it a bounty yeah. There’s a bunch of guns coming after you and your friends. We’re just the first one to show to the party I mean its a quarter billion dollars you understand right.”
Beth looked down to notice that the gunman she threw her phone at was crawling toward the guns at the center of the room. Beth moved toward him and stepped on his back which caused him to sink through the floor, after that she turned her attention to the other gunmen while cracking her knuckles.
“Ya see I don’t understand. Must be the hormones or something.”
Chapter 9
The three of us were armed to the teeth ready for whatever came next the only problem was I had no idea what that meant. There was all sort of possibilities of what came next depending on how you looked at it….bee
eer. My phone vibrated snapping me out of my train of thought, I looked at the screen to see a text from Beth. Fwd: Prometheus put a bounty out on us for 250,000,000.
“…..ummm we’ve got a problem.”
If the tone of my voice didn’t give something away then my face probably did, my heart was pounding. I felt a strange anxiety creep up on me and flood my body. It took me a moment to realize that both Carter and AJ were asking me a question.
“What’s the problem?” Carter asked.
“There’s a bounty on us for 250,000,000.”
Carter looked at me for a moment with a blank expression then said one word. “Shit.”
AJ turned around walked toward a nearby wall then just started leaning against it just before letting out a single awkward giggle. It was totally unexpected to the point that I had completely forgotten about the bounty if only for a moment. Strangely enough I felt less uneasy, I remember recalling how everything in my life was quiet and now it was certain to get louder much louder….
“We need to go. Now.”
And with that I immediately headed for the elevator, Carter and AJ looked at me for a moment then started to move. It was obvious we couldn’t stay here considering this was the first place they would look for us but that wasn’t the problem. The problem was there was a bounty on all of us. Meaning William, Tessa and Shield were in danger and Shield couldn’t protect himself right now.
“Where are you planning on going?” AJ asked.
“To the hospital we’ve got to move Sheild. Plus Beth’s probably on her way there too we need to look after the both of them.”
“What makes you think she’s there too?” Carter asked.
I took a deep breath just when another thought crossed my mind. “Carter you need to go home.”
Carter had a peculiar expression on his face. “Damnit…you’re right.”
AJ was about to ask a question but decided against it then looked me up and down for a moment.
“Could you not get there faster yourself Alex?”
I was about to ask AJ what he was talking about then it hit me. The problem was where we lived was too far for me to teleport there at least directly but there was still the fact that I wasn’t familiar with any of the particular landmarks that were close by without that I couldn’t go anywhere.
The elevator dinged before I could think of something. Shit everyone could be in danger at this very moment I had to prioritize.
“Damnit hang on both of you.”
My stomach felt queasy, it was a precursor to what came next, I placed a hand on Carter and AJ’s shoulders respectively. Then I closed my eyes and envisioned the inside of my home, I took in a deep breath then exhaled then again and again. My breathing almost sounded like I was in labor, my eyes opened while a green light appeared in the peripheries of my eyes moving close to the center of my vision just before everything went black. This was the part I wasn’t quite use to just yet, there was a vast empties like I no longer existed…I clearly still did at least some part of me if I was still able to think. Maybe it was just a consciousness, a consciousness in water…water?
I felt as if jelly was around me or something like that, I was surrounded then I tried to breathe while taking a step forward and that’s when I realized I had no footing. There was that fact and the fact I had just pull water into my lungs. My body spasmed unpleasantly as I coughed out water only to suck in more, I was clearly submerged. So the only thing to do now was to start kicking, it wasn’t easy because I felt heavy but it didn’t take me long before I got moving. I looked up and all I saw was darkness. Without any other option I swam as fast as I could and headed for what I assumed was the surface.
“Aaaaahaaa.”
I gasped for air the very second I reached the surface, my eyes zigzagged around trying to locate anything familiar, it took me a moment but I saw the dock, which was far away from where I was. But where were AJ and Carter? I looked around for a moment then started heading for the dock, the water was unpleasantly cold and the clothes and all the weapons I was carrying didn’t exactly make me very light in the water at the moment. Where were Carter and AJ? It annoyed me that I couldn’t find them, the dock was only a few feet away now, so I pushed forward and started climbing up the dock with who knows how many pounds of weight dragging down on me. I felt like something like this should have been easier for me to deal with but it wasn’t like I was in tiptop shape plus I was still getting use to teleporting.
“You know what no more passengers with powers I don’t understand. Friggin phasing, teleporting…”
I started mumbling incoherently once I was at the top of the dock, the warehouse I stayed in wasn’t too far from here. I looked around one last time then started running forward. I knew my way from here a few yards straight then a left turn for twice the distance and then a right turn. I moved much faster on land then I did in the water reaching the entrance in a matter of minutes. Something in the corner of my eyes looked out of place but I ignored it instead placing my hand on the hand scanner then inputting the code after that the retina scanner scanned my eyes for ten seconds. The door unlocked then opened and I went inside. I looked around everything looked the same. There was still the half colored car which I meant to bring up earlier but didn’t…but that was of no importance right now.
“Welcome back Alexa…ddddeerr akslksdp….
My eyes opened wide someone had damaged SAM.
“Mathew! Mathew are you in here.”
I ran heading for the loft and noticed the door was ajar so I barreled through it and charged inside but then I stumbled to a stop just as fast as I had charged inside. Carter was standing dripping wet in the middle of the living room. He turned to me with a blank expression on his face then turned back to whatever he was staring at. A dark foreboding feeling began to wash over me as I continued forward. I saw AJ who was standing quietly like usual then I scanned the room and notice someone was sitting on the couch, once I cleared the entrance, I could see who it was and my face froze.
“Hello luv, been a long time and all.”
The woman who spoke had chestnut brown eyes and long blonde hair which was braided into a ponytail. She was dressed in black wearing light body armor and a single fingerless black glove on her right hand. Her eyes moved from AJ to me then rested on Carter.
“What are you doing here, where is Mathew?” Carter asked the question through gritted teeth.
It was then that I noticed that my flat screen had been broken, there was several bullet holes through the loft and some of the floorboards had been broken in two. Just before Carter was about to ask his question in a less than polite way Mathew walked down the stairs. The blonde lady pointed her hand back without looking at Mathew.
“There’s your mate right there luv.”
“What’s going on?” Mathew asked.
“We should be asking you that?” Carter yelled sounding like an angry parent.
It managed to catch both AJ and Mathew off guard, they looked at each other and then at me but the stern look on my face had them just as confused. Mathew was about to start explaining but then our mutually familiar friend began to speak.
“Long story short your boy here was ambushed I helped out and this is the thanks I get you could treat your ex finance a little better Sparky dear.”
My brow raised at that sparky that was a new one.
Carter laughed, it was obviously a fake laugh but I figured that was the point.
“Really I owe you a thank you. Let’s see why I wouldn’t do that you stabbed me there’s that.”
“You threw me out of a plane.” She replied.
“To save your life…you tried to kill my brother…twice.”
“Three times actually. You came really close the last time.”
“Well I was only following orders. Plus they thought you were mental and possibly dangerous. And it’s not like either of you haven’t tried to kill me.”
I blinked twice thinking that doesn’t mak
e me feel even a little better. “At least two of those times were because you tried to kill us.”
“You buried me alive Juliette.” Carter suddenly blurted out.
Juliette laughed for a moment then stopped. “Sorry I honestly forgot about that. Awww but I was really happy when they found you.”
Mathew looked at AJ with his mouth open. “Are you guys serious?”
“Wait, you tried to run me over.” Juliette commented.
“….oh yeaaaahh.” Carter replied quietly.
“Hey! Hey anyone mind filling me in on what’s going on.”
I blinked for a moment and looked at Mathew, crap I needed to focus but instead I was getting distracted by all of this. Carter sighed then looked around for a moment.
“Thank you…for saving Mathew.”
Juliette smiled then stood up and stretched her arms in the air.
“You guys might want to know there’s a bounty out on you guys.”
“We are aware.” AJ commented.
The expression on Juliette’s face said oh. I looked at her for a moment and began wondering to myself what was a British Spec ops agent doing here. Did she come to warn us…
“You didn’t come here to warn us did you?”
Juliette narrowed her eyes on me. “Are you asking a question Alexander or are you having one of your moments.”
“Alright, we can go right now if you…” I moved forward but AJ went in front of me to stop any fight from occurring.
“Well if I did it’s not like I’d get a thank you.” She started walking toward me when she said that I moved out of the way so she could head toward the entrance of the loft.
“Your leaving, aren’t you going to help us fight?” I asked.
“Nope, can’t do that. That would be interfering in business that doesn’t involve the crown. Oh and by the way Alexander you might want to change your clothes. You look like a bum and smell like one too.” Juliette’s accent thickened at the end of the sentence I figured she did it for emphasis.
