“Alex wait!”
I barely stopped myself turning toward Carter with an angry expression on my face.
“What. He’s getting away.”
“Let me take him.”
Anger flared, who did Carter think he was? He wasn’t going to take this from me I wasn’t going to let him.
“No. Not happen. Don’t get in my way.”
Carter went in front of me and put his arms out like he was making a line I couldn’t cross. I was more than a little annoyed Carter needed to get out of my way. Because if he didn’t he could get himself hurt.
“Alex listen…”
Carter stopped talking when I pointed my AK at his chest. I instructed him to move but he just stared at me.
“I understand you’re mad. You have every right to be but I can’t fight Cross he can absorb my attacks. It makes him stronger you have a better chance to beat him than me. You’re not the only one who has a vendetta against Adam. We need to be smart here you can stop Cross and I can’t. But I can…no I will stop Adam.”
“You promise. Because if you fail I’ll never. Never forgive you.”
Carter nodded. “Today’s Adam’s last day. I promise.” I lowered my gun while Carter followed the path Adam took, disappearing into the jungle in a matter of moments. I turned around to see that Alastor still had his hands full with Cross. Great.
“Nice teamwork you two have going on. When you feel up for it you mind helping me.”
I rolled my eyes then released my grip on my rifle letting it dangle in front of me. I took a deep breath then started running toward Cross. Hygrometal began seeping from my pores covering my entire body in a protective shell. Aaaaaaagh, in one quick motion I leaped forward tackling Cross to the ground. The two of us tumble backwards at least twice before I pinned him to the ground.
“Alastor get to the base. Don’t wait for us.”
“Seriously putting all the work on me. You two better hurry up I won’t hold the door open for long.”
I didn’t see Alastor leave but I heard his footsteps as he ran, hopefully he would make it to the base and put an end to this. Now I just had to deal with this big guy. So far I managed to keep him pinned without a problem. Only when Cross seemed to realize that Alastor was heading toward the base did he start freaking out and getting real fidgety. Pressing my weight on him as best as I could didn’t seem to be working any more. After a little bit of wiggling Cross managed to get an arm free and he used it to start punching me in the face. Even with the hygrometal coating, his punches weren’t pleasant but they weren’t going to get me…OW….ok maybe I was….Ow. Lifting up my right hand I grabbed Cross’ free hand but he managed to free the other one and punched me hard in the face. Hard enough to knock me off of him and send me flying a few feet. I hit the ground and rolled at least twice then got up more than a little irritated.
“Ok big guy. No more Mr. Nice Guy.” Flinging my left hand forward I shot three blasts at Cross just as he was standing up. He didn’t do anything to avoid the blast instead he just tanked them, once they hit the energy appeared to spread through his body making his veins glow green. His eyes started glowing like a lantern then stopped.
“Right he can absorb more than electricity. Damnit he can probably absorb energy.”
While I was busy talking to myself Cross was charging toward me. I only realized it when it was too late he grabbed hold of my shoulders and continued charging barreling through tree after tree. Aaaaaaaah…..aaaaaaah…..aaaaaaaah nothing about this was fun or remotely pleasant. I grabbed Cross’ biceps and started building up heat in my palms. The temperature increased and increased until it did a lot more than just irritate Cross. He howled in pain while his grip loosened considerably. While still holding onto his biceps I hopped up and placed my feet on top of his chest. Pressing against Cross’ chest as hard as I could I jumped back and flipped in the air while pushing him back. Deciding to keep my distance for now I focused my thoughts on the idea of an invisible force building up. Then I began launching my hands forward in quick succession. It was like they were attached to a pulley system the moment one hand went forward the other went back.
Each of my telekinetic blasts were aimed at center mass, Cross staggered back after each hit but that didn’t stop him from stomping toward me. He was honestly starting to get on my nerves if I didn’t know better I would assume he or it didn’t feel pain. Cross barely seemed human more like a mindless drone or something, considering this was Prometheus I was talking about it was entirely possible.
“Cr..OSSSSS. CROSS.”
Now the thing was yelling its name at me cute. So I decided I was going to treat him to something special. I cupped my hands together focusing on creating a small sphere the size of a baseball. It wasn’t long before I could feel the sphere between my hands so I expanded the spacing between both my hands while I expanded the sphere. I focused more and more on it then started to move my hands together. It was like moving two oppositely charged magnets near each other. My hands were being pushed back by the sphere as I slowly condensed it. Cross was stomping his way toward me but I didn’t even bother looking at him. I could hear the sound of his stomping and feel it too I knew how close he was so I just focused my attention on the telekinetic sphere. It took a lot longer than I had assumed it would but as long as it worked it didn’t matter.
“Crosss. Hunt..Hunt…Alexander.”
Seriously. Big mistake.
Cross was closing in on me and I was almost done, he reached out to grab me while I rotated my upper body toward him, opening my hands I released a powerful iridescent blast. There was an odd clear flash outlined with an iridescent color once my attack hit that and Cross was launched backward so fast I didn’t even see where he went at first. I saw a number of broken trees, that and the ground where Cross had been standing had been dragged all the way up to the first few trees. I took a deep breath and immediately noticed I was woozy…I guess doing that took a lot out of me. Fortunately it didn’t look like Cross was getting up anytime soon so I had time to take a breather, it was an unfortunate assumption on my part that Cross would go down that easily. I could hear him stomping back toward me, hell I could even see he was moving pretty fast and he didn’t look happy.
“NOBLEEEEE.”
“Aw hell why not.” I said the words while going into a running position and taking off hygrometal started to wash over me while I yelled. “CROSSSS.”
Chapter 38
Carter
I ran through the trees with one thought on my mind. I was going to kill Adam. I wouldn’t stop until I did that or he killed me. This wasn’t going to stop unless one of us finished the other. It was a long time coming. Adam ran ahead of me zigzagging through the trees, I followed after him refusing to let him out of my sight for a moment. We were deep inside the forest now a good distance away from Alex and Alastor. Where was he leading me? Where were we he...Just like that Adam had escaped my line of sight. I looked around for a moment scanning the area for any trace of him.
“Surprise!”
Adam lunged at me from the right, I jumped back and shot at the ground, electricity flashed while Adam rolled evading my attack. He went into a standing position then stared at me with an evil grin on his face.
“So I get to kill you first. I was hoping to kill you after Alex but beggars can’t be choosers, right Carter?”
I didn’t respond to Adam instead I just stared at him not breaking eye contact for a moment. Adam scoffed then continued to talk. “Just cause you don’t like me doesn’t me you can’t talk jeez. At least your brother is talkative. Oh congratulations on reuniting with him by the way. I mean it’s pointless now cause you’ll be dead in a couple minutes. But don’t worry he’ll join you soon after.”
Adam punctuated his sentence with a laugh while I aimed my rifle at him he shrugged as if to say I guess that means we’re done talking. Baaaaarp baaaaaarp baaaaarp, Adam rushed forward not bothering to evade my shots. They didn’t do much but brush
against him some shots managed to graze him after a while but that wasn’t going to stop him. So I went forward clenching both my fists then I threw a right cross while Adam did the same. Both of our crosses hit at the same time, neither of us moved back from the hit since we both had our feet firmly planted on the ground. Without warning Adam pulled back his right hand and threw two quick jabs with his left then followed up by doing the same with his right. I maneuvered around his jabs and backhanded his face when I saw an opening.
Adam took a step back and lunged forward attempting to knee me in the stomach. I dodged by pivoting to the right. I sent a punch toward the left side of Adam’s face but he caught it then punched my stomach. Gritting my teeth I bore the pain then grabbed hold of Adam’s arm zeeeeet. Adam staggered back while glaring at me. I smiled then rushed forward while the air around Adam wobbled like a mirage then two doppelgangers appeared. The doppelgangers charged at me while electricity surged around my hand. I struck each of them once zeeet zeeeeet.
The doppelgangers disappeared while two more charged at me. I was about to dispatch them like I did the first when something struck me from the side. I glanced to the side to see another Adam beside me. So I smacked him only for him to disappear, the two doppelgangers in front of me were closing in. So I moved forward hitting one of them in the face with my right hand, the other pivoted toward me and struck my side. Still using my right hand I pulled it to the side in an attempt to smack the other doppelganger. That’s when I was struck on my left side which caused me to miss the doppelganger.
Taking a quick look around I saw that a large number of doppelgangers were rushing toward me from all sides. Electricity coiled around my hands while I moved forward and struck the closest doppelganger. Each of my attacks were quick one hit and another doppelganger down but two appeared to take its place. A punch forward, an elbow back, a kick to the side, front and back. Two punches in front, duck, pivot…aaaaah….dodged….aaaaaah….attack…..aaaaah. Eventually the doppelganger started to overpower me. Each time I hit one another would hit me after a while I went on the defensive just evading until that wasn’t an option anymore. I was being pummeled from all sides. While I heard the doppelgangers starting to laugh. Adam’s annoying laugh coming from all sides.
“ENOUGH!!!”
A barrier of electricity expanded from my body blasting all the doppelgangers away. Both my hands were pointed to the sky as I took in a few quick breathes.
“Hu..hu…hu…so Adam you’re going to send your clones to do your dirty work. Is that… IS THAT HOW YOU’RE GOING TO FIGHT PATHETIC?”
Suddenly Adam rushed toward me with alarming speed, he was leaning forward while he ran. I aimed my right hand at him releasing an arc of electricity, Adam zigzagged around it while I craned my hand to follow him. The electricity lashed at the ground burning leaves, twigs, anything it touched. Adam still approached me so I aimed my left hand at him, just about to fire when the air in front of him wobbled, a doppelganger appeared and ran toward me in a curved motion. I barely glanced at the doppelganger, but even that was too much. Adam was right in front of me when I turned my attention back to him. He let loose a powerful punch which made my jaw click and my body launch backward. The doppelganger from earlier was position in the direction I was flying toward. Even if I wanted to move I couldn’t, I was moving too fast, once I was near the doppelganger it kicked upward hitting my back sending me skyward.
“Aaaaaaaaaaaaah.”
My body flew into the air and there was nothing I could do to stop it. While I was skyward bound Adam had jumped into the air to say hi. An evil grin worked its way onto his face as he interlaced his fingers. Then he slammed his hands down hitting me in the stomach, involuntarily saliva launched from my mouth while my body plummeted toward the ground like a meteor. Adam wasn’t done with me yet he was heading toward the ground preparing to punch me, he was coming down almost as fast as me. Ok it’s time for me to stop being his punching bag.
Electricity discharged from my body coiling around and dissipated then discharged again. Paying careful attention to when I would reach the ground, I began to move my legs I had to time this right or else it would hurt a lot more than I wanted it to. The ground was closing in almost…almost…almost…NOW. Kicking my legs forward I flipped my body so my legs were pointed toward the ground. I braced myself for impact the moment I hit the ground, I sank for just a moment while the ground flattened around me. The second the ground flattened I pressed against it and jumped back while aiming both my hands in front of me. Adam punched down into the small crater and when he did dust erupted into the air covering him. Just before he was completely covered though…zeeeeeeet zeeeeet zeeeeeeet.
A brilliant bolt of electricity shot forth entering the dust cloud like a hunter seeking it’s pray. The dust cloud flashed when electricity hit its mark, Adam howled in pain which brought a smile to my face, the second my feet touched the ground I rushed forward and charged toward him. The doppelganger from earlier rushed toward me so I flung my hand in its direction sending a ball of electricity to stop it. The dust cloud started clearing while I entered it, I could see Adam up ahead he didn’t look happy. Adam charged at me while I evaded his first punch and blocked his second. I slid back just a little while Adam ran toward me. So I pivoted around him and sent my elbow flying into his back. Adam staggered while I turned to face him, he punched my face while I hit him in the chest. I hit him twice in the stomach while he struck my chest, then Adam swung wide so I ducked and struck Adam’s neck with the knuckle of two of my fingers zeeeeet.
Adam made a gagging sound the second he was hit, his body writhed in pain just for a moment but it wasn’t enough. I managed to get in close and hit him in the face with a combination of punches. When I threw my last punch Adam caught my fist then stared me down just before punching me in the solar plexus. The wind was knocked out of me so I started to suck in air, huuu….huuu….huuuu. While still holding my hand Adam launched a flurry of body shots with his free hand. Zeeeeet a surge of electricity jumped from my hand to Adam’s forcing him to release his grip. I moved in closer and struck Adam’s face hard causing him to stagger backward then I hit him again with my other hand. Tightening my right hand as I released it forward I struck Adam’s face hard enough that a smack sound echoed in the air. He stood his ground, but that didn’t stop his body from sliding back through the mud. He was still standing but now he was a good couple of feet away.
“Wow Carter. You’re a little tougher than I thought. Only a little though. But I can see it you’re slipping you won’t last too much longer now.” Adam gave me an eerie smile when he was done talking.
I just shook my head. “You know Adam I never liked you. I never liked you when you were friends with my brother as a kid. I never liked you when we were in the army. Not when you betrayed us, and not now. In fact I hate you. Always have.”
Adam’s smile grew when he heard me say that. “You know I’ve never like you either not one bit until now. Hahaha you’re really a spiteful person aren’t you.” A gold glow from Adam’s eyes finished his sentence.
What the hell was with this guy he was acting like what I was saying was some sort of complement.
“Oh and Adam I’m nowhere near finished. I haven’t even gotten started yet.” A blue flash from my eyes said the rest.
Chapter 39
“Come on!”
No matter what I threw at this guy it barely affected him. It was like fighting a sentient mountain. The mountain probably wouldn’t smack me around as much though. I was currently on the ground while the raging mountain charged at me. What did they feed this guy anyway? Reluctantly I got up to face Cross as he approached, I stood my ground and waited for him to reach me while I waited I took a deep breath to help me focus.
“Alexannnndeeeerrr.”
Again with using my name. Cross was definitely getting on my nerves. He was only a few feet away when he picked up the pace attempting to ram me.
“Raaaaaargggggh.”
/> Still I didn’t move even when he was just about to hit me I took another deep breath, focusing. Cross charged right through me and continued charging, barreling through a number of trees, it took him a while to stop and look around. At least I had one advantage I was definitely smarter than him.
“Telekinesis didn’t do it. How about a heaping helping of fire.”
While I spoke two balls of fire formed, one in each of my hands. I closed both my hands into fists while the flames continued to grow. Cross searched around aimlessly then turned around to see me standing exactly where I was earlier. The flames grew to the point I could barely contain them in my closed fists. The flames lashed around the spaces between my fingers while I lifted my hands forward and pointed them in front of me. Opening my hands slowly the flames danced excitedly then I pushed both hands forward releasing a stream of fire. My eyes were glowing green as the raging fire rushed forth. Cross ran toward the flames like a naïve child. Unfortunately I was the naïve one, Cross barreled his way through the flames without much of a problem. I didn’t lose hope instead I kept going, as Cross got closer and closer he was also getting slower. The only problem, I couldn’t keep the flames up like this forever.
“Breathe just breathe.” I told myself while Cross drew closer it took Cross about a minute or two to reach me. He had what I assumed was a pained expression on his face but that didn’t stop him from soldiering on. Cross was closing in now taking large steps forward, I could barely hold on while Cross stood right in front of me raising his left hand toward him, he quickly brought it toward me swatting me as if I was a fly. I shot backward and tumbled against the ground a number of times before stopping. Pain blared like a fog horn across my body but that was nothing new. I was more concerned about the fact that Cross kept one upping me at every turn.
“This…is getting really old.” I muttered the words to myself while I got up from the ground.
