Chapter One
Devyn Serrant strode out of the corridor, feeling confident. She’d been doing this work for a great number of years and was quite sure of her capabilities. Coming to a halt, her gaze searched for a placard that bore her name.
The man who held it up was tall and dignified, clad in a charcoal black suit, white shirt and black tie. His shoes were polished to perfection. A bit older than she expected, but it wasn’t her problem.
She marched forward. “Mr. Underwood? I’m Devyn Serrant.”
The gentleman tipped his hat. “Nice to meet you, ma’am. I’m Jason. Mr. Underwood sent me to pick you up from the airport. I’m his chauffeur.”
She’d expected a personal welcome. What kind of a man hired a nanny for his only child off the agency roster and didn’t bother to meet her even once? A little taken aback by this odd twist, Devyn allowed the chauffeur to take her luggage. She followed him to the sleek limousine.
He rested the two suitcases down and opened the door then helped her to settle in. Next, he dealt with her luggage.
“Is the house far?”
“It will take about an hour to get there, ma’am.”
“Okay, thank you.”
Devyn was a professional nanny. She had a degree in child psychology and another in Mathematics, and was fluent in three languages apart from her native English. Devyn was often hired by celebrities and politicians as a nanny, and she spent the last three years in that position in China. Now, she was back in the USA. Glad as she was to get this job, she felt a little flustered her employer didn’t come to the airport. Usually, parents brought the children along and welcomed the nannies as part of their family. It was a good way for the bonding process to begin. Perhaps Mr. Underwood wasn’t aware of such niceties, or maybe he just didn’t care. The first three months would be on a trial basis, and if she didn’t like the situation, she had the option to break the contract. Devyn hoped it wouldn’t come to that because the money was good, and she looked forward to this new job in Chicago.
When the chauffeur turned the car into the driveway that bordered a huge, well-maintained garden, her eyes widened. She expected her employer to be rich, but it was obvious he was loaded. The car slid to a stop and she stepped out, before Jason had a chance to assist her. Devyn took a good look at the mansion. She liked it, and yet there was a sense of unease that flitted along her spine. She sprang up the steps and rang the bell.
A butler opened the door. “This way, ma’am. Mr. Underwood is expecting you.”
Devyn stepped inside after the brief greeting and followed him. She was led into a richly decorated study. The huge pane glass windows looked out at the lovely garden, but her attention was focused on the man who sat behind the desk.
When they entered, Mr. Underwood stared at them. He was downright gorgeous. Surely, he belonged on a ramp or perhaps a movie set. Is he an actor? A famous model? His sable hair gleamed in the sunlight that poured in through the huge pane glass window.
His lean jaw and high cheekbones completed a face that captivated her, and his cinnamon colored eyes pinned her. Her breath caught in her throat and her palms dampened with sweat. Her fingers itched to run through his hair and feel the silky softness of it. Never before had she ever experience such a strong attraction for a man.
“Sir, Ms. Serrant is here.”
“Thank you, Charles.” He then turned to address Devyn, “I’m Keran Underwood.” He rose from his seat and came forward. “I’m glad you made it. Was the flight comfortable?” His voice came out warm and rich, much like honey poured over pancakes.
She licked her bottom lip almost as if she could taste him. “Yes, thank you.”
“I’m sorry I wasn’t able to come to the airport. My son has a fever.”
His manners were impeccable, a fact she wanted to ignore but couldn’t. Now, she did
n’t have a chance in hell of fighting this terrible rush of lust that careened inside her. “I hope it isn’t anything serious.” Devyn resisted the urge to run away. She wanted to get back on the plane and never see him again. This man would bring her nothing but trouble, but she’d signed the contract, and there was no way she could get out before her three-month trial was over.
He frowned. “The doctor assured me that it isn’t.” It looked as if he didn’t believe the doctor.
She could see he felt concerned for his son and the realization gladdened her heart. It was a good sign he was involved in his child’s life. But damn it! Why did he have such an insane effect on her?
“I’ll take you to see him now…that is unless you prefer to freshen up first.”
As if on cue, the butler came with a tray of coffee. Rich, dark cookies were arranged on a platter. The aroma from the scones that were placed on another plate told her they were freshly made. Her stomach rumbled. She’d eaten on the plane, but it was hours ago. Truth be told, Devyn was a healthy, big girl; she needed sustenance more than the thin models one saw on the covers of magazines.
The butler put the tray on the table and left.
Keran gestured for her to sit before he took his seat. He then served her, and she accepted the coffee. Almost as if he sensed her thoughts, he arranged two scones with a cookie on a plate and gave it to her.
“Thank you.”
He took a cookie and turned it around in his hand. “My chef is extremely talented. He would be happy to make anything you like. Generally, I prefer that the nanny dine with us. It makes it easier to bond with the child and for you to feel as if you’re a part of the family.”
It was almost as if he read her thoughts. That’s exactly what she wanted before she saw him, but now she wanted to bond with him. Damn it. Devyn didn’t like these intrusive thoughts that plagued her. He was right, of course. How could she say no? Still, Devyn swallowed the denial that sprang to her lips. It would be torture to sit across him and eat when every fiber of her body craved to be touched by him. “That would be lovely,” she managed to say.
He took a bite from his cookie, and she felt something curl in her stomach. Lust, pure and simple. Why oh why, did he have to be so attractive?
“I’ve read your résumé and was impressed with your qualifications. You could have gotten any job in the world. Why did you choose this career?”
“I love taking care of kids.” No way, no how, she was ever going to reveal her secret. “There’s joy in it.”
“And you stayed in China before that?”
She was surprised he knew that. So, he read her résumé with care. “Their youngest went off to boarding school and there was no need for a resident nanny,” she said. “I’m in touch with the children, of course. They email me.”
He raised a brow. “Do you maintain contact with all your previous charges?”
“If the child wants to, and if the parents don’t have an objection, then yes,” she stated flatly. Devyn lifted her cup and took a sip of the coffee. It was delicious, as were the scones. She could only imagine the food the chef would prepare if this were the standard he set for an afternoon tea. “I was told you move around a lot.”
“I have interests in various countries. And I work from home, so it’s convenient for me to move to different places. For this reason, and for some others, I’ve homeschooled my son. He goes to various extra-curricular activities, so he can meet other children and interact with them.” Mr. Underwood’s face beamed with pride. “He’s quite a little man.”
“Why did the last nanny leave?” she asked in a blunt manner. “I feel it’s important to know, so I’m prepared.”
“She was getting up in age, and Justin is…rambunctious. He likes to play outdoors, and must be accompanied by his nanny and bodyguard. She found it hard to cope.”
“Bodyguard?”
“He is necessary,” Keran replied in a voice that invited no argument or questions. “Another thing; my wife died when my son was two years old. He doesn’t remember her, but he doesn’t mind talking about her, so you don’t have to tiptoe around the issue.”
That would have been her next question, and she was glad he answered it without the need for her to articulate it. “Thank you for telling me.”
He didn’t tell her the reason for his wife’s untimely death, and she didn’t ask. Instead, he stood. “Come. I’ll introduce you to my son.”
Since her coffee was finished, she set the cup down. Devyn followed him out.
He led her up a curved, marble staircase that led to the first floor.
The house was magnificent with each room richly decorated but when he opened the door, the child who sat on the love seat next to the window dazzled her. He’d inherited his father’s dark brown hair and piercing rich, dark brown eyes with reddish undertone that had the same punch of power. His face was lean and adorable, and she could tell he would be just as attractive as his dad. The intelligence that shone in his eyes was unmistakable.
Seeing his father, the child grinned. “I’m almost finished.”
So, he shared an easy relationship with his father. Devyn was glad to see that. She noticed he referred to the book he held in his hand.
Keran smiled as he walked further into the room. “Justin, I would like to introduce you to your new nanny, Devyn Serrant. She came all the way from California.”
The boy wrinkled his nose even as he unfolded his length from the seat. He stood. “I’m too old to have a nanny.”
He was eight, she recalled from the details she was sent, but he was tall.
“I beg your pardon,” his dad amended. “She’s your new teacher.”
Justin cocked his head. He surveyed her. As if she’d passed inspection, he strode forward and thrust out his hand. “Hello. How are you?”
Charmed by his manner, Devyn grinned as she took his hand. “I’m fine, thank you. You’re reading Shakespeare, I see.”
“I have to read for thirty minutes every day. It’s best to get it over with as soon as possible.”
“Despite my best efforts, Justin hasn’t developed a love for Shakespeare,” Keran teased as he ruffled his son’s hair. “But he’s been reading all the books I recommend.”
“Yes, because when I’m finished, we’re going to Disney world,” he reminded his father.
“Oh yes, we are.” Keran grinned at his son.
The warm love of their bond brought tears to her eyes. The man was damn near perfect. Not only was he good-looking, but also loving. Obviously devoted to the boy and in her opinion, the best trait a parent could have.
“I’ll leave you two alone. Justin, please show Ms. Serrant her room.”
“Just call me Devyn,” she said to the child. “Less formal, don’t you think?”
Justin nodded. “Yes, it is. Come with me.”
They walked out of the room, and she was uncomfortably aware of Keran’s lingering gaze on her as Justin led her to the second floor.
When he opened the door to her room, she was charmed. This room really could be considered to be a suite. The emerald green, lace bedcover draped a four poster bed. A couch lined the wall. From the window, she could look down at the garden.
“That’s the bathroom.” The boy pointed as he opened another door.
She gasped. It was as large as the bedroom. “That’s a Jacuzzi.”
“Yes, I don’t have one because dad thinks it’s not safe for me without supervision. But I get to use his as long as he’s in the room.”
“That’s good.”
Justin led her to the sliding doors and opened them. Beyond was a living room with a huge flat screen TV mounted on the wall. In one corner was a writing desk, and there was even a tiny kitchenette, complete with a fridge and a stove. “You can cook your own food, but why would you want to? Gustav, our chef, is amazing. I love the chocolate desserts he makes and tonight, I’m sure he’ll make good food because it’s your first day.”
“So, he doesn
t make good food every day?” she teased.
“He does, but dad doesn’t allow him to make fancy meals. I must not be spoiled, he says.”
She grinned at the wistful note to his voice. She’d met her share of spoiled kids, and it was obvious he wasn’t one. His father had done a fantastic job, or perhaps it was the previous nanny she needed to thank. Devyn turned. She’d spied her bags in the corner. “I must unpack now. Maybe later you can show me the place where we’ll study.”
“There’s a class room right next to this suite,” he said. “I usually study there, but sometimes I like to go outside and work on the patio.”
“We can do that if you like,” she offered
“Are you going to start teaching me today?”
The expression on his face told her what he thought of that idea. Devyn grinned at him. “I was thinking you might show me around the house today. Maybe we can play outside.”
“Great. Do you ride?”
“Umm—no.”
“Good. I can teach you.” He sat on the bed. His father hadn’t exaggerated when he said the boy was friendly. “My horse Sherpa is one of the best horses in the world. You can ride him.”
She was scared of horses, but Devyn didn’t want to tell him that. “That would be nice.”
“We also have a swimming pool. Do you swim?”
“Yes, I do.” She opened her bag just as there was a knock on the door.
A uniformed maid came in. “Ma’am, I can do your unpacking.”
“Thank you. I’ll do it myself. You can call me Devyn.”
She nodded. “Yes, Devyn, and I’m Hannah. If you need anything, you can let me know.” She turned to the child. “Justin, feet off the bed, please.”
Justin obeyed her without protest.
Then Hannah left.
Devyn took out her clothes and settled them in the cupboard while Justin chatted nonstop. It was easy to see she wouldn't find it difficult to settle into the house with her new charge. He was a delight. Now all she had to worry about would be avoiding his father as much as possible because she might just to rip off his clothes and make wild love to him if she wasn’t careful.
