“Gentlemen,” he said, and his voice was old and quavering, “pity me — pity me because I am now man instead of official. Pity the governor of the State of New York who resigns at noon to-day.” He paused. “The woman who was with Creynell the night you saw him in the foyer of the New Amsterdam theatre — the woman whom he had prepared to ruin the night after two of you killed him — the mere girl as she was — has told me all.” He fumbled in his breast pocket. He flung on the table three crisp documents, each bearing on its face in staring black type the one significant word “PARDON.” “Gentlemen, it is right that you three should know the truth, bitter as it is.” His voice rose. “By God, he was a snake! A cruel, despicable snake. That woman — that girl — told me all before dawn this morning. She — she — ” his voice broke “she was my — my daughter.”
He swung suddenly on his heel and with head bowed down walked from the cell. And only the three gleaming white documents and the sound of his dragging footsteps were left to prove the reality of his visit. As for the three men, they rose stiffly, dazedly, from their chairs, and each from his corner moved toward the table as if in a dream.
“The governor’s daughter!” murmured McCaigh, the Iron Man, brokenly. Then, with an inarticulate sob, he collapsed into the quick-reaching arms of his two companions. And the sun, now generously pouring the cool liquid gold of life itself over the sill of the stone room, filled the entire space.
