I tried to crack my eyes and gave up.
“Does he need you to help him shift again?” Ron asked. Shift again? I had no recollection of shifting, the last thing I remembered was…
“My babies.” I forced my eyes open. “My babies.”
“Are perfectly wonderful. All five of them.” Doc squirted something into my mouth with a dropper. “Swallow that. You need to meet your babies.”
“Come in, guys.” Ron was sitting beside my bed, a baby in his arms. “This is Nessa.”
“Like the monster?” I sat up and pushed myself against the headboard. How could he name our baby after a monster?
“Nessa means miracle. She is our smallest, and Doc says her heartbeat had been weak which was why we didn’t notice her, but she came out fierce like a lion.” He set her in my arms. “And don’t worry, now that she’s not being squashed by her siblings, she’s perfect. And I already had a little discussion with her about how she’s not allowed to almost kill her daddy again.” He sang it like it was no big deal, but I had almost died...had I not been fighting for her I may have even welcomed it just to not be in the agony anymore.
“Knock, knock.” Ms. Patty came in holding a baby, but I couldn’t see which one from where I was. “We brought some people to visit you.”
Jase, Edison, and Xander came in behind her, each carrying a baby, and August holding a sleeping Angeline.
“Papa said you should be dead.” Xander set Grace in my other arm. “Said you fought harder than he’s ever seen.”
“Your papa is the one who saved her. I was just along for the ride.”
Xander’s face beamed with pride. I loved hearing him call Doc Papa. I hadn’t known him when he was living here, in the awful conditions I’d walked into the day I moved in, but Doc was his father. Period.
“I appreciate the kind words, but don’t underestimate your cat. He is fierce.”
“Sheriff Ron.” Ms. Patty handed him the baby in her arms, which turned out to be Travis. “Congratulations. Becoming a father of five beautiful children and the first person to get one hundred percent of the votes in the town elections. We didn’t even get the yearly write-in for Scooby-Doo.”
Small towns were weird.
I looked up at Ron with pride bursting out of my heart. “You won!”
“Oh, sweet mate of mine, I won the day I met you. You’ve given me a life I never dared to dream for, and now...five amazing children. If you could stop the almost dying thing, though, I’d appreciate that.”
“I can do that.” I looked around the room at my friends, my baby, and my mate.
Pride.
Once again, my cat was smarter than I was. These people...they were my pride. I was home.
