  Prologue

Fuck! I hate this fucking tuxedo. Why the hell Brooke would make me wear it tonight I have no idea. Yes, it’s New Year’s Eve, but this thing is just not my style.

I’m a jeans and a t-shirt type of guy. That’s me, Jackson Garrett. Just a simple man that most of my friends call Jax.

I’m the co-owner of a badass custom bike shop called Tricked in Kansas City, as well as one in Oklahoma City where I was born and raised. I moved to the Kansas City area to help my best friend and business partner, Dylan, when he had some fucked up shit go down with his family. But luckily everything is okay now. Hell it’s better than okay, he has it made.

The dude actually got married and settled down. He even has a kid on the way, on fucking purpose. Years ago, Dylan was known for being crazy, being out all night, partying and getting laid. That's how I remember him. Now he's a domesticated family man. How he changed, I'll never know, but I've never seen him happier. If he’s happy, then I’m happy.

Besides, his girl Brooke is pretty badass herself. I’ve grown pretty close to her and their entire family. They are my family now.

And that’s why we are here tonight at this formal party. Brooke and Dylan first hooked up on New Year’s Eve and a year later on New Year’s Eve Dylan proposed to her, so now the rest of us have to endure a grand party every year on this day.

I suppose they are worth it though, there is just something about the Monroe clan that draws you in and actually keeps you there. I didn’t grow up with much family, so they have become my family and there isn’t anything I wouldn’t do for them.

So here I am, at the Plaza in downtown Kansas City, wearing my monkey suit that feels like it is sucking the life out of my massive body. Brooke does have damn good taste though. The event was complete with a fancy catered meal followed by a dance with a live band that doesn’t suck for once.

I glance around, scoping out a potential easy score for tonight. I spot Dylan’s younger brother Luke and his girlfriend Hannah in the corner of the large ballroom. They are lost in conversation. Luke’s arm is wrapped around her, pulling her in close. That boy never had a fucking chance after she came back into his life. He’s barely nineteen and in it for the long haul.

I move my head to the right and see the youngest Monroe child named Gabby, pouting at the table. Gabby is only nine and is probably upset because her dog Toby wasn’t allowed to come tonight. She quickly brightens up when Dylan and Brooke bring her over some kind of gelatin dessert.

Next I see Michael, who is thirteen and seems to be having a great time slow dancing with his little girlfriend. On that same dance floor, I see the oldest girl Cassie. She just turned eighteen and is doing everything she can to drive us all crazy with her crazy ass hormones.

If you can avoid teenage girls, do it. I care about her like she is my own sister, but that girl tries my fucking patience.

Like right now, she’s all over Luke’s old football teammate Hunter. He seems like a good kid and I would really hate to break his face, but Cassie is really pushing her luck tonight.

There is one really good thing about this scene that is going on in front of me. It’s not her douchebag ex-boyfriend Brent that’s she’s grinding on. That kid was really fucking close to getting me sent to jail on more than one occasion.

I narrow my eyes at Hunter and I’m pleased when he puts some space in between Cassie’s body and his own.

Okay, now that the family is accounted for I can finally move on to my original goal, bagging a nice, easy play thing for after the party.

  Chapter 1

  Jax

There are a lot of smokin’ hot chicks at this New Year’s Eve party. Unfortunately, most of them are on the arm of someone else.

Damn I would kill to be down at the Power and Light District right now, that’s where all of the single chicks are tonight. Gettin’ wasted and just waitin’ for me. While I’m stuck here in couples’ hell.

Oh well, might as well work then. I took the liberty of inviting several clients and potential clients tonight.

That’s me. If I can’t be fucking, then I am sure as hell going to be building up my business and making money.

Now, I sweep the room, searching for clients. And I momentarily pause on a tall, leggy blonde standing by the punch bowl. Damn.

She’s not my usual type. Most people that know me
would say, my type is anyone who has a pussy, tits and is breathing, but that’s not entirely true. I usually go for the ‘tough chick’ type, the almost trashy girls with tattoos, piercings. The girls that will fuck up your shit if you do them wrong. That’s usually my bread and butter.

This girl though, she’s the total opposite of all of that. She’s almost virginal, with her perfect, angelic face. It’s quite possible that she’s a model. Hands down the most beautiful face I’ve ever seen, and with the killer body to match. She doesn’t have one long hair out of place and it’s obvious that not one detail was skimmed over when she was fixing herself up for tonight.

She’s tall for a woman, probably around five foot eleven, even without the high heels she has on. And even though she’s trying to appear casual, she’s standing there with perfect posture. This woman is almost too fucking perfect.

  She looks bored and uncomfortable.

What kind of gentleman would I be if I just let her stand there all alone?

I grin as I start my confident stride in her direction.

This girl has no idea what is about to hit her.

My plan is rudely interrupted when I’m stopped by one of my most prominent clients, Nicholas Warner. Senator Nicholas Warner.

Fuck me. I hate this fucking guy.

But he is one of our VIP clients. He knows a shitload of people around this area, it’s his fucking job to network and get to know people, so of course I stop to talk to him.

  “Well, Jackson, Happy New Year!”

He holds out his overzealous hand for me to shake and I grip it, “Senator Warner, I’m glad that you could make it.”

“Of course, I would never miss such an elegant affair. You boys sure know how to throw a party.”

Where the fuck is Dylan? This is his job. I really hate dealing with the clients. Especially, this controlling pompous ass. I just customized a ’57 Chevy for him and he literally called me every single day and stopped in continuously until it was done to his specific qualifications.

  Prick.

I have no tolerance for bullshit. I don’t deal with the clients, that’s Dylan’s job. I find the cars, make sure all of the details are perfect down to a fucking T, crunch the numbers, and I deal with other ‘car guys’. But this fucking guy really clung onto me.

“I’m glad you are enjoying yourself, sir.” Ugh, that tastes really bad in my mouth.

“I really am and I wanted to drive my newest baby tonight, but there was no way I would subject it to the snow.”

  “Probably the better choice.”

Shit. I suppose I should stick to my plan and drum up a little business, not that things are slow, but there is always room for more clients. I quickly glance over at my angel to see if she is still there.

She is and she’s actually looking in my direction.

And color me pleasantly surprised, because now she’s actually walking over to me.

God, the things I would do to this woman.

“You know I would love to introduce you to my wife, after all of the time I’ve spent with you Jackson, it’s kind of unbelievable that you two haven’t met yet.”

  Huh?

The fucking goddess who was walking over to greet me, takes a turn and is now latched on to Senator Dickface. What the fuck is happening?

  “Your wife?”

She holds onto his arm with her left hand and Senator Warner nods, happily, “Yes, Jackson Garrett, I would love for you to meet the love of my life, Charlotte.”

He turns to her, “Charlotte, I’d like you to meet Jackson, the man that built my Chevy.”

Charlotte. So that’s her name. And she’s fucking married.

Her face brightens into the most beautiful smile I have ever seen as she holds out her slender hand for my large paw and says in a thick Southern accent that I wasn’t expecting, “Ah so you’re the one that’s been keeping my husband away from me.”

  You’re welcome.

I grasp her hand firmly in mine and shake it, confidently, “It’s nice to meet you, Charlotte.”

“It’s a pleasure to meet you as well, Jackson.”

We are still shaking hands and I slowly remove mine from hers. Don’t go there asshole. There isn’t much I won’t do when it comes to a woman I want to fuck, but married to a fucking client? That’s got ‘bad idea’ written all over it.

She is even more perfect up close, her perfect fucking body, is cloaked in a dark red evening gown that does incredible things for her curves. It’s subtle, but it’s sexy as hell. And I can now see that her eyes are green, a shimmering dark green that I’ve never seen before.

Fuck, I need to remove myself from this situation right now.

“It was nice to meet you, Charlotte. And Senator, I’m glad you are happy with your new car. Please let us know if there is anything we can do for you in the future and I’ll be in contact.”

  Clean break. Go.

“Well actually, there is something you can do for me.”

My head almost droops, but business is business, “Anything.”

He nods his head toward his wife, my angel, “Well, our seventh wedding anniversary is coming up next week and I think you can help me with a present.”

Seventh? Jesus Christ, did he just pluck her right out of high school?

Charlotte smiles politely, “Honey, you don’t need to get me anything.”

Okay, Senator Warner isn’t technically a bad looking guy, he’s in his late forties and it’s apparent that he takes care of himself. Some women would probably call him handsome, in a cheesy politician sort of way, but seriously why the fuck is this gorgeous woman with him? She can’t even be in her thirties yet.

And to top it off, she actually seems to like him.

He purrs over at her, “Of course I do sweetheart, you deserve the very best in the world.”

Okay this display of affection is turning my stomach. I interrupt this love fest, bluntly, “So how can I help?”

“Well, I love the work that you have done for me and I would like to commission a dream car for Charlotte.”

She shakes her head, “Oh no, that’s crazy. I’m fine with the car I have.”

He just ignores her, staring straight at me, “I want it built from the ground up, any car she wants, money is no object and I want every detail designed by her.”

Well fuck- I love the whole ‘money is no object’ part. Like I’m going to turn this down. “Of course, just call our office tomorrow and we will get it all set up.”

He addresses Charlotte now, “Okay, so you will call Jackson in the morning and schedule a time to get started. You are in the very best of hands my dear.”

This sounds like a lot of time is going to be spent with Mrs. Warner on this project.

Is this guy fucking crazy, leaving his wife in my hands?

  Chapter 2

  Jax

After leaving the Senator and his wife I notice that Alex, is sitting at one of the fancily decorated tables by herself. Although I want nothing more than to get the fuck out of here, there is no way in hell I’m leaving her sitting all alone, looking sad like she is.

Alex has become one of my best friends. She’s a badass chick, with dyed red hair, tattoos, and piercings. You know that type I mentioned earlier? Alex is their queen. Needless to say, she’s hot as hell and yeah, I’ve been there, done that with her in the past, but ultimately we decided we were better off friends.

Okay, she decided. I would gladly fuck her any time she wanted it, but although she has a tough as nails exterior, Alex is looking for the real deal and that’s not me.

There have been a couple of drunken hookups over the years, but not for a while. She’s also Brooke’s best friend and another part of this crazy ass family.

I make my way through the crowded dance floor and over to her table, casually sitting down in the chair next to hers, “What’s up, Alex?”

She lifts her shoulders in a depressed sort of shrug, “Not much, contemplating how long I
need to stay here to make Brooke happy.”

  See, we’re a lot alike.

I nudge her shoulder with mine, “You look pretty sad and alone over here. You okay?”

“I’m fine and thank you for pointing out that I’m alone. I’m fucking alone on New Year’s Eve. Great start to the year.”

“Damn, Alex. That’s a little dramatic, you’re fucking hot. I’m sure you could have asked any guy to come with you tonight and they would have gladly accepted. What’s the matter, I ruin you for all other guys?”

I wink at her and I’m met with a saucy glare. She’s not having it. “Don’t flatter yourself. I’m not looking for a one-night screw, Jax. And there is really only one guy I wanted to bring tonight.”

I try not to let my eyes roll, not this fucking guy still. Alex was dating some boring ass, accountant for almost a year until they suddenly broke up a few months back. Personally I have no idea what the hell she ever saw in him. They had nothing in common. “Seriously, that guy? You’re still on that?”

“We dated for the better part of a year and he has a name.” She interrupts me before I can name any of my pet names for him, “And its Stephen.”

His name is even boring. “Right, what even happened between you two? You never told me.”

“Yeah, I’m not going into that with you.”

  “Why the hell not?”

She folds her arms, clearly irritated with me, “Because I’m not interested in your smartass response.”

Probably fair, I just can’t help myself most of the time. “Come on, Alex. What happened? Did you catch him with another chick or were you just finally tired of staring up at the ceiling during the planned monotonous, plain ole missionary sex.”

  “Fuck you, Jackson.”

  “Anytime sweetheart.”

That gets a slight smile, although she’s still perturbed. “The sex wasn’t the problem, missionary can actually be very satisfying.” She makes an exasperated sigh, “Ugh, he proposed.”

What the fuck? “He proposed? As in marriage?”

  “Yes.”

“Okay, so you said no then.”

“Yeah, I did. I turned him down, even though he is the absolute perfect man.”

“I don’t know about all of that, but so he broke up with you because his fucking ego was bruised when you said no? What a pussy.”
