And my Saturdays were reserved for Henry who, in addition to keeping me up to date on all the goings on in Arcadia, always pleasured me in the most exquisite fashion.
My four prince charmings and my knight in shining armor.
As for Sundays and Mondays, those days were all mine. I often took the time to read reports, stroll the grounds and just relax.
All in all, we were happy with the arrangement that really suited everyone.
Especially me!
Epilogue
Violet
As my morning routine would have it, I sat out on the balcony adjacent to my room and looked out at the castle grounds and the forests and mountains of Arcadia beyond it.
It was a spectacular view that I never tired of. Sunny days had the island bursting with color. On overcast days, shadows shifted and moved around with the light that filtered through the clouds.
While the winter months could sometimes be bleak and grey, once a blanket of snow covered the ground, it was a true wonderland.
But today, with the promise of spring bursting from everywhere, I simply stared up at the clear blue sky, not bothering to find amusing forms in the small puffs of clouds that slowly travelled across the expanse.
I had, once again, had a disturbing dream about Axel. Over the past years, the dream would occasionally return, making me anxious about seeing Axel at all. But lately, the dream had persistently troubled my sleep night after night, often leaving me trembling with fear in the morning.
A gentle knock sounded at the door.
“Come in,” I called out, knowing it was Lucinda.
She opened the door and peered inside.
“I’m out here,” I said.
She came to the French doors that led to the balcony. “You called for me, Miss?”
“Do you have a moment to sit and chat, Lucinda?”
“Oh, I always have time for you, Miss.” She took a seat across from me and I poured her a cup of tea. “Thank you so very much, Miss Violet.”
For a long moment I looked down at the crust of buttered bread with only one bite taken out of it. My stomach seemed to refuse any food today.
“What is it, Miss?” Lucinda said, clearly concerned for me. “I have noticed that you are a bit out of sorts lately.”
“I know that I should be the happiest woman alive,” I said, gesturing all around me. “I have everything a woman could want and more. My role as Kingmaker has been widely accepted. My men… oh, my lovely men… they are all so good to me. I really do think that I made the right decision in not marrying any of them. Taking them on as lovers has proven to be the perfect solution.”
“You are, indeed, in an enviable position, Miss.”
I slowly brought my gaze to her. “My dreams about Axel have recently taken on a sense of… I don’t know. They are more frequent… and they are just so darn real. There’s a sense of urgency to them, as if I should be doing something about it, but I don’t know what.”
“You mean the dreams where he kills you?”
I nodded. Just saying those words aloud gave me the creeps. He killed me. In every single dream with him, he killed me.
“I don’t know what to make of it, Lucinda,” I said. “I’ve tried to shrug it off as just a dream. But there is something so foreboding.”
“Is today your day with Axel?” she asked. She knew all about my weekly routine and knew which days I was with which man. It seemed to amuse her greatly.
I nodded.
“If I remember correctly, last week you excused yourself from your day with Axel,” she said. “You claimed a headache.”
Again, I nodded. “Yes. It wasn’t a complete lie. This dream really has given me a headache.” I looked into her eyes so full of wisdom. “What do you make of it, Lucinda? Should I be concerned? Should I avoid spending time with Axel… alone?”
I thought of our escapade two weeks earlier. We’d climbed to the top of a very high and very steep mountain. As we’d stood on the precipice looking down, Axel had put his hand to my waist, and I felt certain he was going to push me off the edge. It was a dreadful sensation.
“You once said that in these dreams, while you knew it to be Axel, he was nonetheless different… bigger, stronger… even a bit younger.”
I nodded.
“I believe your dreams may be warning you of something that is to come in the future… far in the future. I don’t believe he will ultimately kill you, but he will undoubtedly do something that will break your heart. From what you’ve told me about these dreams, I believe that he may have a very black message for you.”
I set my elbows on the table and leaned in closer to her. “My dreams have this castle turning into a school for royals. It’s beautiful and enchanting and, while for the most part everything looks the same, many of the bedrooms have been converted into classrooms. In my dreams Axel does not go by the name Axel. They call his Kaz.”
Lucinda looked perplexed as I told her the intricate details of my dreams.
“He has been spreading rumors about me,” I went on. “He has been telling the noble students that the newest student is not a royal at all… just a commoner. That new student is me, Lucinda. He is telling everyone that I don’t deserve to be here and that I’m nothing more than a commoner.”
We were silent for a moment as I let her digest that bit of information. “In my dreams, they do not call me Violet,” I went on. “They call me Tempest.”
I looked at her, wondering if the names Kaz and Tempest could ring a bell, hoping that she could tell me what these wild dreams were about.
Though obviously intrigued, she said nothing.
“All of that has been going on for a while in these dreams, but last night…” I pulled in a long, deep breath, shuddering as the dream came alive in my mind’s eye. “A beautiful woman stood beside Axel. She seemed very regal. With her nose in the air, she glided through the halls of the school, her gossamer gown floating elegantly behind her. She looked spoiled, always wanting everything to go her way. But there was also something evil about her. The look in her eyes… the strange curve of her lips. She seemed to delight in humiliating others, in forcing them to kneel before her as she unloads her derogatory insults on them.”
Tears came to my eyes as I remembered how this evil princess had verbally hammered a professor with incredible accusations. In the end, unable to make any kind of defensive statement at all, the professor had left the school entirely.
“Veronica,” Lucinda said simply, stating the name of this evil princess.
Startled, I looked at her. “Yes,” I said breathlessly. “Exactly. How did you know?”
Lucinda took a small sip of tea and hesitated.
“You have to tell me, Lucinda. I must know. What do you know about this Veronica?”
“The trickster fae… many times when she chooses to take human form, she is fond of calling herself Veronica.”
My heart stopped. “The trickster fae?” I said in disbelief. I sat and stared at the tabletop for a long moment, going over every moment of my latest dream. “She seems very powerful,” I finally said. “And she enjoys wielding it. Not only do the students fear her, but many of the professors as well.”
Lucinda nodded her understanding.
“I believe she might have immense control over Axel as well… or Kaz as he is known. At the very tail end of this latest dream, Kaz has invoked a death decree.”
Lucinda audibly gasped.
“My understanding is that it is an open invitation to all the students of Kingsbury… an invitation to come after me… Tempest.”
Horrified, Lucinda stared at me. “The Black Envelope.”
