"Give me your phone number."
"I lost my phone."
"Okay. Let's do it the old-fashioned way."
He pulls a stub of a pencil out of his pocket and scrawls something on the back of a receipt.
"Now you've got my number."
He puts it in my hand and then he's gone. Takes a step and he vanishes. Shifted over to the other world. Man, that is such a cool trick.
I have to learn how to do it—right after I figure out how to shift back from my mountain lion shape still wearing clothes.

About the Author
Charles de Lint is a full-time writer and musician who makes his home in Ottawa, Canada. His many awards include the World Fantasy Award, the Canadian SF/Fantasy Aurora Award, and the White Pine Award, among others.
