She could feel them getting closer and she reached her hand back and plucked the gun she had stuck down the back of her pants. Her father and platoon leader would have been appalled at her choice of hiding spaces. But when you were a curvy girl there was only so much room.
It was interesting that Falcon had no fear for her, no question that this was a true partnership. He expected her to do her job. She set her feet and loosened up her hips. Keeping the gun down but preparing for anything. She didn’t want to disappoint him. If she got hurt, she knew him well enough to know that he’d never leave her side again.
And then she saw them coming over one of the small dunes.
She sighed. Well, one question was answered. Blue dots meant Siloth. Three of them were headed her way. It was what she’d guessed. So, who or what was yellow? Whoever was sporting that color they were still a bit out. At least there was only one more.
She knew it wasn’t Falcon, he was purple.
She turned her attention back to the red, furry, four-armed creatures that had kidnapped her sister and cousin.
The one in the lead raised his arm, pointing a cylinder weapon at her. She’d already been shot with one of those, it stung like a mother. And there wasn’t anything large enough for her to hide behind. Calmly she straightened her arm with the forty-five, quickly aimed, and shot the bastard in the head.
He got a shot off before he was hit and missed her.
Barely.
She felt the blast sizzle by her into the side of the ship. A slight sting into the side of her head told her she’d been hit with shrapnel. She didn’t bother to raise her hand and check. She kept her eyes on what was coming at her.
Both of the Siloth’s who were left had drawn their weapons. She was going to have to get two perfect shots off and make them count.
Only she didn’t have the chance.
A large, dark-haired man on what looked like a large ox, came sweeping into view, chasing after the Siloths. He felled one by cutting off his head and chased after the third. When the last Siloth simply disappeared, the man turned and faced her. He moved slowly in her direction.
Oh hell. Mister yellow dot had come to call and he was a freaking giant. But he wasn’t pointing a weapon at her and hadn’t hurt her, yet. And he had actually helped her by killing one of the Siloths. So, she kept the gun out and pointed down. When he got closer, she called out, “Stop. Right there.” And repeated it in the three Megoth dialects she’d learned in the last few hours. She really hoped she hadn’t screwed that up and said something like, Take me you fool.
That would be bad.
She figured Falcon should have heard her gunshot and was coming to her rescue.
He needed to hurry. Hand-to-hand combat with this man would be a lost cause.
The stranger stopped. And grunted at her. Pointing at the blood seeping from a cut on her arm. She hadn’t seen or felt that. It looked like the Siloth hit her with more shrapnel then she thought.
She nodded her understanding and carefully watched the alien who had legs the size of redwood tree trunks. He was massive. But the long, curly dark hair and brilliant blue eyes, looked good on him. His arms were uncovered and tatted up with incredible scrollwork.
He was a handsome giant.
She was glad he didn’t move closer.
He beat his hand on his gigantic chest and grunted, “Viktal.” Then pointed at her.
Ah, the Tarzan and Jane bit.
She pointed at herself and said, “Kayla.” Then she tried to get fancy. She pulled out a picture she had of her sister and said, “Kaitlyn. Need Kaitlyn.” Then she pointed the way she knew her sister had gone.
Viktal shook his head. “Man comes. Viktal need Kaitlyn.” And he turned around and quickly disappeared.
Shit.
Falcon came running up a few seconds later, frantically searching the land in front of her.
“He’s gone.”
He turned to her and his eyes widened in shock. “You’re hurt. What the hell happened out here? I’ve only been gone for twenty minutes.”
“Is that all. It seemed like more.”
WHEN FALCON RETURNED, the huge alien that Kayla described had already disappeared. From her description, he sounded like a warlord. One of the aliens who were trying to clean up this outlaw planet.
He listened to his Keeper explain what happen and looked at the two dead Siloth the warlord had hauled into the bush. He didn’t think he would be able to leave Makayla alone for the rest of their lives.
Doing so this time had put her in danger. He looked out over the sand dunes, wishing he could thank the man.
Falcon figured out the last one of the Siloth had escaped down a tunnel too small for her new friend, too dangerous for her. He had already made the decision to stay out of the tunnels if they could.
Kayla was sure the Siloth was headed back out after Kaitlyn. The warlord made it clear he was after her sister too.
He took the time to heal his Keeper. Stimulating the nodule in his mouth and then licking the wounds he’d cleaned. She had one at her temple and one on her forearm. The Binding Pollen would act as an antibiotic and healing salve. The cuts had already started to close.
Then he helped her bury a metal box that she’d filled with Kaitlyn’s gun, ammunition, something she called sparring gear, along with food and water. He knew there was a good supply of jerky and the granola bars his Keeper had made in preparation for this trip. He was so proud of her.
She had turned out to be so much more than he expected. Her army skills, as well as the skills she’d learned growing up on a Texas ranch, had made her a valuable partner.
She had also included some water, coffee, and a heat source Falcon gave her. It was very simple to use, and the pictures included on the bars would be easy for Kaitlyn to figure out their purpose.
Makayla scribbled a quick message to her sister and put it in the box and then buried it and covered it with rocks.
He had her sit in front of him on a rock while he carefully braided her hair and covered his love from head to toe in the desert turban and robes that would not only protect her from the fierce heat but from prying eyes.
He helped her stand and then drew her into his body. Kissing her before they started. “I love you, Makayla. Remember we are in this together.”
She grinned and nodded at them and within moments, they started walking toward the village of Tandor.
They were doing as Kaitlyn bid them. Going to save Lauren first.
AS MAKAYLA WALKED, she worried she was making the right choice. Falcon took her hand and made her feel better. There was no good decision here.
Kaitlyn was free and would hopefully stay that way. If she came back to the ship, she’d see the sign Kayla left her. Letting her know her sister was here, had left her something and gone after Lauren... and would be returning as soon as possible.
She walked beside Falcon for several minutes, heading toward the village in the distance. Finally, she couldn’t avoid the question. “Why did they take Lauren and the other girls to this village?”
Falcon sucked in air. He turned to his Keeper and gathered her in his arms again. She knew she wasn’t going to like his answer. He drew her close, held her, and whispered, “The breeder markets are in Tandor.”
“Oh, shit.” she moaned, clinging to him for a moment. Then she stood straight and said, “We need to walk faster.” She knew it was too far to run.
She was so glad she had Falcon, her Guardian Alien at her side. She was sure she was going to need not only his help but his support in the coming days.
Kayla knew this wasn’t going to be easy.
Epilogue
IT WAS HOT. THE AIR smelled like sweat and things she didn’t want to think about. She pushed her heavy dark hair out of her eyes and wished for the hundredth time for a scrunchie or even a rubber band.
She carefully looked around, surprised to find that she wasn’t in a room but in a big cave. When they brought her in last nigh
t, she’d seen flashes of buildings and thought they were in an alien city or town. She’d felt a flash of hope that somehow she could get away and find help.
Then they gave her a shot that knocked her out and she woke up clean and with these stupid clothes on. If you could call them clothes. They didn’t cover much of her body. She shuddered when she thought about one of her captors bathing her. Touching her with one or all of their four hands. She was going to start crying if she thought about it for long. Or screaming.
Lauren had discovered early on that screaming hysterically would give them an excuse to beat her. She wasn’t doing that again.
Tears they would just ignore.
She looked at the big burly guard who stood a few feet away from her cage. A glance around the spacious cavern told her there were at least three more of them. They had two arms, not the four of her kidnappers, and they all had visible weapons. She could see knives, a sword of sorts, and a long tube-like thing that looked ominous.
A shock stick maybe, some type of a laser weapon. Growing up watching all the sci-fi crap her cousin liked gave her too many ideas.
Lauren kicked at the bars on the cage she’d been locked in. Hoping that Kaitlyn would come for her. Or Makayla. She wanted her older cousin. Makayla had taken the place of her mother and father when they died. She held Lauren when she cried and fixed her when she got hurt.
She was the voice of reason and the devil spurring her on.
She wanted Makayla. Please, she silently prayed, looking around at the dozens of cages filled with both Earth women and women from other planets who were locked in a cell just like she was. She slid to the ground and put her head on her knees. She hugged her legs and tried to blank out her mind.
Blank out everything but the soul-wrenching plea she kept silently repeating, over and over again. Please, Makayla, come get me out of this mess. They are going to sell me tomorrow! Please, Makayla, come get me out of this mess.
