A phone chirps.
His.
He takes it out of his pocket. Glances at the screen.
Silver eyes meet mine. “Excuse me.”
“Yeah.” I gesture for him to take it. Glance around at the ladies on the dance floor.
Venus is on the fringes of the crowd, strapped into a slinky grey dress that leaves very little to the imagination. Her feet are bare as she jumps up and down to the beat.
Wild.
Free.
She’s completely surrendered to the moment.
I try to get her attention, but she’s not paying me any mind.
It doesn’t matter.
I know what she’ll say. Something along the lines of ‘it’s about damn time’ and ‘remember protection’.
I hope Brendon has because I don’t walk around with condoms.
My fingers tighten on my beer bottle.
This is insane.
“What? Ariya?” Brendon’s conversation pulls my attention back to him. He scrambles out of his chair. “I’ll be right there.”
I blink rapidly, concerned by the urgency in his voice. “Is something wrong?”
“I’m sorry. I have to go.” He takes a step forward. Hesitates. Looks back at me. Shakes his head.
And then he stalks to the door.
Leaving me sitting there.
Alone.
