Putting on what Bobby called my ‘happy princess face’, (you know the one. It’s when you’re smiling at a person while thinking of all the ways to maim her at the same time) I cooed, “Virgil, can we please go into the exam room? It’s so crowded in here. I’m getting light-headed.”
Jumping up like a doting boyfriend, (I swore I was gonna be sick) Virgil immediately wheeled me to the center of the room and ran back to my office. I wasn’t sure what he was up to, but I used the time to say, “Hit it baby.” The telltale click of the recorder sounded, but thankfully, the psycho was too busy pushing the rolling bulletin board out with us to hear it. I had no idea what he was doing and truly didn’t want to think about what he was capable of beyond the murders he’d already committed.
Hurrying before he changed his mind and moved me away from the recorder, I began my interrogation. “I understand that you wanted to get my attention, but why did you have to kill all those women? Wasn’t there another way to get my attention without them having to die?”
Turning, with a true look of confusion on his face, he shook his head before answering. “No, darling. They had to die. You’re the Medical Examiner. They were gifts for you, to show you that no matter what our future holds I’ll never make you quit your job. I value your mind as much as I lust after your gorgeous curves.” (Gross does not begin to cover what I was feeling. I could feel the chunks rising. Only the numbness that was taking over from my continued exposure to silver kept my last cup of coffee in my stomach.) I prayed I could keep my wits about me long enough to get his confession on tape.
“How did you pick them, Virgil Kackley?” I knew it wasn’t very smooth, but I had to say his whole name for the record.
The weenie mistook it as a term of endearment and gushed. “Oh, Vidalia, I’m so glad you like hearing my name. I cannot wait until I can call you Mrs. Kackley.” He paused as I braced for his answer, then he went on. “To answer your question, I found women that reminded me of you. Of course they were merely poor imitations of the real thing, but they served their purpose.”
(Well, shit! Why did he have to go and say that? I was already drowning in guilt.)
I had to press on, had to get it on tape before I passed out, so I asked, “And why drain all their blood before throwing them out the window?”
“Isn’t it obvious, my love? You needed to be challenged. It had to be a puzzle for you to solve. This was to be your New York Times Sunday crossword, made especially for you with the prize of an eternity of love and devotion at its conclusion.”
“But you didn’t wait for me to solve it. You came early. Why?”
Virgil once again knelt before me, but this time he pouted like a little boy, bottom lip pushed out and all. Tilting his head to the side and batting his eyes, (yes, I swear he batted his eyes) he said, “Please don’t be cross with me, but I bugged your computer as well as the detective’s. I saw that the dickhead was getting too close. He, like you, looked at the pictures of ‘the men’ the ladies had recently dated and was planning to come to you for your expert opinion. I couldn’t take the chance that you two would figure it out together and he would somehow hide you from me.”
Shock didn’t begin to describe what I was feeling. The sick, stupid, son of a bitch standing before me had literally killed six women just to get my attention. It was mind boggling. I had no words, yet I needed to keep him talking. I opened my mouth to ask another question when Virgil pulled a diamond ring the size of Texas out of his pocket.
“I hope you don’t mind, but I borrowed this from Miss Davenport. It’s a family heirloom, and since she was the last of their line, I thought we’d get better use out of it.”
He cleared his throat, took my left hand in his, and looked into my eyes. The icky, nasty nothing I saw staring back at me was terrifying. Whatever it was, a spirit, a demon, or the devil himself, had a serious hold of Virgil, and from the looks of it, wasn’t letting go. The evil entity had found his true match in the squirrely little phlebotomist that was attempting to propose marriage to me. (Life just got weirder by the minute.)
“Vidalia Cecily Fitzsimmons, (Don’t make fun. Cecily was my nana’s name.) will you do me the unquestionable honor of being my wife?”
For the only time in my entire life, I was at a loss for words. My mouth refused to open. It was as if the silver had seeped into my brain and was taking away my motor functions, beginning with my jaw. Looking anywhere but at the idiot kneeling before me, I caught sight of movement just outside the large glass windows lining the right back corner of the exam room.
The thought of actually making it out of the horrible situation I was in with my head and without being engaged to Virgil, forced me to gasp. The idiot thought it was because I was caught up in the moment, which in hindsight, worked out perfectly. Faster than I could track, Bobby sailed across the exam room, catching Virgil around the neck and flailing him against the far wall.
The impact left a man sized crater in the block wall and would’ve killed a normal human, but of course, Virgil the idiot wasn’t a normal human. Hell, he wasn’t even a normal vampire, if there is such a thing.
The battle that ensued could only be described as epic. Bobby and Virgil threw one another all over the County Morgue, while I was stuck shackled to a wheelchair, quickly coming close to losing consciousness. My vision had narrowed to a hazy circle about a quarter of the size my usual field of vision, which blinked in and out with ever-growing frequency. My last thought before I passed out was how thoughtful it was of both men to keep the fight from me. I never even felt the breeze from them throwing each other about.
Twelve hours and a two-pint blood transfusion later, I woke in my condo with Bobby pacing at the foot of the bed. His hair was mussed from where he’d repeatedly run his hands through it and he had dark circles under his eyes. I owe it to you to tell you that vampires do not get dark circles under their eyes. Unless of course they had them when they were turned, and I can assure you my man did not. However, they do get them from blood loss and/or lack of feeding.
No sooner had that thought crossed my mind than I was catapulting out of bed and latching onto Bobby for all I was worth. “Are you hurt? Are you bleeding? Where are you bleeding? Do you need to feed? You can feed from me. Talk to me, dammit.” Words spewed from my mouth so fast it took my ears a few seconds to catch up and even longer to realize the man I loved was laughing at me. Not with me, because I most definitely was not laughing.
Trying to pull from his arms, only to be drawn closer, I squinted my eyes and growled through gritted teeth, “Screw you, Bobby Monroe, just screw you.”
His pupils dilated. His nostrils flared. He pulled me so close I was sure we’d be fused together, and then just stood still, looking deeply into my eyes. Several heartbeats later, which for a vampire can be a little bit of time, he whispered, “I love you, Vidalia Fitzsimmons. I mean love you all the way through, no exceptions, no exclusions, just love you so bad it hurts. Tomorrow, you’re gonna become Vidalia Monroe, but before then, I’m gonna love you like tomorrow might never come.” And with that, he slammed his mouth to mine.
Moving slower than I could ever remember, he walked us back, while deepening the kiss. I felt the mattress touch the back of my knees at the same time Bobby’s hands slid under the T-shirt I was wearing. Apparently, somewhere between the morgue and that moment, I’d been undressed and redressed in one of his old shirts and my panties. I tried to remember what had transpired, but his hand closing over my hardened nipple and lightly squeezing my more than ample breast, drove all thought from my mind.
Pulling the soft cotton over my head without letting go, Bobby looked at my nearly naked body with pure love and more than a little lust. It was the most empowering feeling I’d ever had. To know the man I loved like something out of a fairy tale loved me the same way, just filled my soul with a true sense of peace. I knew my place in the universe and it was by this man’s side. I was certain beyond doubt there was nothing in the world that would e
ver come between us, not even crazy ass stalkers that turned themselves into akágí yitsʼǫǫsii and killed women to get my attention. It was Fate, kismet, alignment in the stars, and God’s will, all rolled into one.
As if we shared the same thought, our lips once again met, and this time there was no slow burn, but an explosion of love and passion that threatened to consume us both. I felt the fabric at my waist pull tight right before Bobby ripped the panties from my body and threw them to the side. His hands closed around the globes of my ass and lifted me until I had no other option but to wrap my legs around his waist.
Spinning, he took three large strides before my back touched the cool, flat surface of the wall. His lips left mine for only a split second. Once again, I heard the sound of tearing fabric, and when he returned to me, the feel of his hard, muscled skin against mine was like coming home. His calloused hands seemed to touch not only my body, but my soul. His hips pushing against mine held me in place, forcing his erection between the wet, swollen lips of my pussy.
Rolling his hips, the head of his dick teased the tip of my engorged clit on every pass, making me shake and shiver in his arms. The longer we continued our erotic dance, the higher my excitement grew, until the proof wet the inside of my thighs and the front of his. His lips left mine, kissing down my neck and across my chest, using his hands on my hips to lift me higher. I moaned at the loss of contact between my legs just as he latched onto my extended nipple and lightly bit down, letting it slide between his fangs. We shivered in unison at the sensations the erotic movement gave us both. His right arm slid around my waist, while his left hand made its way south, and he simultaneously took as much of my breast into his mouth as he could. Bobby then let his fangs barely rest against my tender skin, teasing it with what was to come while he slid first one, and then almost immediately, two fingers deep inside me. Thank God for vampire strength, because no other man could hold me against the wall with only one arm while finger fucking me with the other.
His fingers worked their way in and out, increasing their speed on every pass, bumping my excited clit and rubbing that special bundle of nerves deep inside my core that made my eyes cross. Soon, two fingers became three, and I was riding his hand like a cowgirl at the rodeo, searching for the orgasm that was barreling down upon me. Bobby’s thumb began rubbing circles over my clit, pressing harder at every turn.
“Vidalia, open those eyes and look at me. As with all things, we do this together, Darlin’.”
My eyes snapped to his. The world seemed to stop on its axis as the depth of his love shone from those brilliant blue orbs and directly into me. He pushed his fingers deep inside, using the palm of his hand to tease my swollen clit. At the same time, he bent all three fingers and worked the bundle of nerves at my core until I was flooded with so much pleasure I couldn’t breathe.
My orgasm came over me at the same time that I watched my husband-to-be bury his fangs deep into my breast. Every draw he took of my blood sent a whole new set of tremors through my core, extending my orgasm until I was sure I would pass out. I felt him retract his incisors as he slowly removed his fingers from inside me, my pussy so tender that just that small movement set off a new wave of tremors.
Sliding down the wall with Bobby’s arm wrapped around me for support, I all but fell against his chest and cuddled against him as he took us to the bed. His erection touched my thigh, and it was as if the last twenty minutes hadn’t happened. My body jumped to attention, ready to please its perfect match in every way.
Shaking his head, he sighed. “I think we need to take it easy, Darlin’. Just lay back and let me hold you. We have all the time in the world to make love.”
Feigning agreement, I let him lay me on the bed and waited while he did the same. No sooner had his back touched the mattress than I pounced. Straddling his thighs, I carefully took his extremely hard dick into my hands and worked one upwards towards the swollen head, while the other glided gently downward, squeezing at the base before repeating the action.
Bobby’s eyes rolled back in his head while he fought to maintain his control. Breathless, after three tries of trying to speak, he finally wheezed, “You need…rest. Silver…exposure.”
Grinning from ear to ear, I worked his erection through my fists just a bit faster, effectively cutting off whatever else he was about to say. Sliding my butt down his legs until I was lying on my stomach, I positioned the head of his dick right against my lips and lightly breathed across the slit. Bobby’s back bowed up off the bed as he yelled my name. Loving the effect I had on him, I licked the tip of his erection like a lollipop, savoring his warm, salty flavor as a single drop of precum hit my tongue.
Just before I took all of him into my mouth with the promise of untold pleasure, I whispered, “Exercise is part of the healing process, my love. Doctor’s orders and I’m the doctor.”
EPILOGUE
I bet you thought I was gonna leave you hanging. Now that would be rude and y’all know a southern girl cannot be rude. So here goes…
After many hours of lovemaking, I awoke to…oh shit, that’s not what y’all want to know. You wanna know what happened to Virgil. (Chill, I was just playing.)
During the fight, Bobby was able to get the upper hand and stab him in the heart with a silver spike that until recently, I had no idea he owned. Of course, all secrets are out now that…oh, hold on. I’ll get to that.
Anyway, a silver spike to the heart does not kill an akágí yitsʼǫǫsii or a vampire for that matter, it only renders them totally immobilized, completely coherent and able to feel everything, but unable to move in any way, even to blink their eyes. Bobby then took my stalker, aka six time murderer, to Big Bald Mountain and buried him deep in a cavern in the heart of a mountain that is guarded by werewolves. (Don’t ask. I had no clue either and am nowhere near ready to learn any more about them than that they exist.) The stupid son of a bitch will live forever, or until his head finds its way off his shoulders, in utter isolation, unable to move, unable to escape, unable to harm another soul. It seems like a fair punishment for the beautiful lives he snuffed out of existence.
As for those six women that I will forever feel responsible for? Their cases will go unsolved, but there are those of us that will always remember and do everything in our power to make sure their legacies live on in one way or another.
Bobby also took care of the destroyed morgue. He took pictures before so I could see, and then had a few of his ‘special’ friends (Read as something other than a werewolf and a vamp and know that one day, when I can deal with other ‘things that go bump in the night’ being out there, I’ll get you right up to speed.) help restore it to its original utilitarian awesomeness. Not even Reggie noticed anything different, and that boy notices everything.
I hope that answers all your questions, because today is my wedding day! To say I’m excited would be a HUGE understatement. I’m ecstatic and cannot wait to become Mrs. Robert James Monroe. I have to hyphenate my name. Daddy’s orders, because of the whole inheriting an empire thing, but in my heart I’m just gonna be Vidalia Monroe and that sounds as close to heaven as I ever thought I’d get.
After all, what more can the Vidalia onion heiress from Buckhead, GA, who just happens to be a cursed, fangless vampire, hope for?
Now go on, I need to put the finishing touches on my makeup and get into my wedding dress. This is one party I’m not gonna be fashionably late to, no matter what Emily Post has to say about it.
