  18The curtain was flesh-coloured and too thick to flutter. In stamped red letters it said FIRE CURTAIN and from its invasive, meaty smell you knew that it had held back many fires.

  19And you went home, you went home, and there was a man in black already there, and through everything that happened to you and your mother, you both had to smile, smile, smile.
