by Lacey Wolfe
Hey, life wasn’t worth living unless you were laughing.
“So, when’s the big day?” her dad asked.
Kayla groaned. “We haven’t made it that far yet.”
“Why not? Didn’t I say before I wasn’t crazy about you two living together unmarried?”
“Dad, my relationship is between Ryan and me.” She winked.
He held a hand up. “Point taken.”
“At least no one is faking anything anymore,” her mom added.
“Sorry about that.” Kayla wondered if there was more to what her mom was saying.
“Your father and I are just glad it backfired on the both of you.”
Mrs. Newell chuckled. “Right. Too bad they’re our only children. I think we make good matchmakers. Maybe we should start a business.”
They weren’t serious, were they?
“Good idea.” Her mom agreed. Go figure.
“Let’s not forget all the crappy dates you set me up on. You might not be as skilled as you think.” Kayla sipped her tea.
“So tell me, was the view gorgeous at the cabin?” Mrs. Newell asked.
Ryan laughed this time. “It was nice. This one—” He poked Kayla. “—was certain a murderer was out there, and every night as soon as the sun went down she wouldn’t go back into the main living area for fear someone was watching.”
“How do you know someone wasn’t?” Kayla raised an eyebrow.
“Did you ever even look off the back porch?” Ryan asked.
She shook her head.
“We were on the edge of a mountain. Unless someone was sitting in a tree, no one was looking in the window.”
Kayla giggled. “Don’t put anything past a serial killer.”
“So now you’ve upgraded the murderer to a serial killer.” Ryan leaned over and kissed her cheek. “You’re going to make my life real interesting.”
She stuck her tongue out at him. “You’d better watch out, or I’ll leave you home with Bunny again.”
“God, no.”
As dinner went on, the conversation stayed light and playful. Kayla caught little looks between her parents, and if her gut was right, she was pretty sure they were on the right track and perhaps reconciliation was in their future. After all, when you love someone, it’s hard to just give up.
Ryan squeezed her thigh under the table. She smiled at him, hoping he knew how much she loved him.
