“We were just discussing that.”
“No we. I’m asking you. Does he make your heart sing?”
She nodded and dabbed at the new tears forming in her eyes. “I just don’t want people to think poorly of us.”
“People? What people? Have you read the newspapers lately? Half these marriages are nothing more than business arrangements. A familial merger, if you will. I’m always happy to help with an actual love story. You two ladies are part of a wonderful love story and I need to make sure you get to Happily Ever After.”
“How will you do that?” Amelia asked.
“You won’t believe how simple it is. Just leave everything to me.” With that she was gone, a publicity superhero off to save the world.
“Mom, what about you?”
“I just want you to be happy. That’s all I’ve ever wanted.” She leaned in for a hug and said, “Just don’t cry on my dress.”
One month later, the ceremony went off without a hitch. The announcements in all the newspapers made a point of stating things like “the happy couple was first introduced by their children” and “we may very well have a second Bradley-Hughes wedding in the near future.” With a simple press release on Bunny Bingleman letterhead, we became a non-issue as promised. We were just another potential merger buried next to a story about a Saudi royal who needed a separate closet just for her Chanel winter coats.
As Amelia danced cheek to cheek with Sandy and watched their parents beaming with happiness, she was overcome with the feeling of contentment her mother had described. She whispered in his ear. “If we ever get married, I’d like to have the ceremony at Golden Dragon.”
A broad smile took over his face. “Fortune cookies for everyone.”
“You read my mind.”
“We should probably do it while Lilly is still young enough to be our flower girl.”
“Aww you big mush,” she said as she wrapped her arms around his neck.
He spun her around and dipped her towards the floor before pulling her up for a long, slow kiss. “I’m absolutely crazy about you, Miss Bradley.”
She leaned in to kiss him again. “Mr. Hughes, I will tell you once and for all … you’re way more fun than a battery-operated boyfriend.”
“Phew,” he said with a dramatic wave of his hand. “But I won’t stop trying to prove it to you night after night.”
“I hope you never do.”
Sandy made good on his promise, resulting in another visit from Bunny Bingleman. The birth announcement for young Walter Hughes was quietly lost amidst the press coverage for a reality TV star’s presidential campaign. They were indeed married at Golden Dragon a few years later with Lilly as flower girl and little Walter carrying the rings. The elder Hughes thought the team branded vibrators were a brilliant idea and turned them into the most successful bachelorette party gift in decades.
Billionaire Stepbrother’s Homecoming - Sneak Peek
Billionaire Stepbrother's Homecoming
Billy opened the sun roof as we exited the parking lot. “I’ve always wanted to do this.” He stood up and raised his arms over his head. I giddily joined him as we let the wind whip through our hair. He leaned up against me and wrapped his arms around my waist. I waved at the people walking along Main Street, loving that they had no idea his hands were on me. At the first stoplight, I dropped back down and yanked on Billy’s pant leg to join me.
He plopped back into the seat. I stared into his eyes and felt an uncontrollable urge building inside of me. I hesitated for only a moment before I sprang forward and pressed my body on top of his. He squeezed tightly, trapping my body as he kissed my lips. He placed one hand on the side of my face and held it gently as he kissed and sucked on my lips as if he knew every inch of them. I felt my body melting as his tongue twirled around mine.
He worked his way down to my neck and alternated between nibbling with his lips and lightly brushing his tongue against my skin. I closed my eyes, losing myself to his gentle touch. My breathing grew heavy as my hips began to grind on his. With a quick swivel, he reversed our positions and pinned me under him. He stroked my hair and cheek while staring into my eyes. “Should I stop?”
I shook my head.
He looked down and hesitated. “This is going to change things … change them forever. Are you sure?”
“Please don’t stop,” I whispered.
