Miri fell on her knees and turned her head. Standing near the edge of the plateau was Rion. The boy had used his own mindforce to redirect Slane’s sword to the Magus’s own neck. “Miri!” Rion said as he ran over and hugged her.
The Striga let out a deep breath as she held the crying boy in her arms. Miri looked out into the distance and she could see twinkling lights across the horizon, coming from the last city. Lethe was clearly inhabited, not an abandoned ruin like the Black Redoubt.
Rion looked up at her with longing eyes. “I thought you were dead. I thought I was going to be alone once again.”
Despite the pain, Miri smiled and gave him a kiss on his forehead. “You will never be alone ever again, Rion. I will protect you.”
Taking the boy’s hand, she led him down the plateau. Dawn would be coming soon and their journey would go on.
