by Chas Funderburg

I would again like to acknowledge my best friend and wife, Cathy, for all her support and input into my book. She contributes great ideas, and encourages me to show evil for how ugly it really is.

Finally, thank you to all the people who had input into my writing: Jeff Gerke for his writing tips and book cover; The Word Weavers group in Tampa, Florida, various writers who have influenced me, including Kat Heckenbach, who told me not to let Poisonous wimp out, but be evil for a while.

Disclaimer: I do not support the idea that fallen angels can be redeemed, nor do angels of light need to be redeemed. This book is a work of fiction, and should be taken that way.

“All human flesh must burn painfully in Hell forever! Make sure that you feed them the lies and deceptions that will lead them to share our misery. He loves them, and I hate them. They should know what agony and hopelessness feel like.”

Lucifer stood on his dais, looking very much like the owner of a large company, dressed in an expensive business suit, tie, shoes and accessories. Of course, underneath the business suit, Lucifer looked as decayed as the gathered demons. His eyes burned fiery red as they swept across the audience, casting fear into all of them. The gathered demons represented the rank and file of Hell. All were twisted versions of the angels of light, whose evil hearts had made them rot into their current condition. Even the very air reeked of decay. Dark heaviness covered the entire realm.

Lucifer continued, “Anyone caught fraternizing with them or being influenced by them will be thrown into Hell immediately. I’ve heard rumors that some of you have been doing exactly this. Trust me, you will be found out, and punishment will be executed immediately; no excuses, no exceptions.”

Poisonous represented the Lust Nymphs, who corrupted men’s hearts, and made them trade true love for unrestrained lust. The tentacles on her head, as well as the razor-sharp nails on her hands and feet injected any of various poisons into her victims. The tentacles’ primary purpose, however, was to inject lust into her victims. At first glance, Poisonous appeared to be an attractive young woman. Underneath her slithering tentacles, smooth gray-green flesh with occasional red designs interspersed throughout her body like tattoos, while gray-green eyes took in the cosmos around her.

Lucifer’s words and his baleful stare made Poisonous shudder. Lucifer never said anything in jest: humor did not enter into his personality. The words spoken had the same intent and meaning as in previous iterations, though not always the same verbiage. She trembled as she remembered herself and her partner—Virtue Destroyer—dealing with Evie and Gracie Chen, and how Lady Ruache seemed to be working on their hearts. They both had even shown weakness and cried. At least she had always avoided the influence of the Light, and continued with perpetrating evil. VD, on the other hand, had become increasingly enamored with doing things motivated by good will. She had even mentioned to Evie Chen, a former angel and one of their mutual victims that she was glad Evie had found salvation. She had gushed about being happy to have had conversations with Lady Ruache, the Holy Spirit of God, and had the audacity to say that she might like to know redemption herself. Well, that was then, and now she resolutely felt it was time to change tactics. VD was on her own. She didn’t need to be influenced by such a traitorous demon.

She knew exactly what Lucifer meant in his speech, and that he would make good on his threats, but she didn’t care. “Yes; I hear you, Lucifer, ya blowhard. However, I need some excitement; some deviation from the same old tired routine. It’s time to make a change. I’m heading down to Earth to make human lives miserable.”

Having heard her ruler continue to drone on endlessly, she tuned him out. The mission never changed, so hearing it again would gain her nothing. Instead, she sat in her chasm-like cave, restlessly pacing the floor. Her tentacles reached for a drinking cup, while another of her tentacles reached for the container of powerful liquid, much stronger than alcohol. Being thirsty, she took in the whole cup in one gulp. Burping loud, as dark angels have no manners, she reached for another glass, and did the same.

Lucifer’s modus operandi always involved dark angels manipulating the minds of humans, causing them to commit atrocious acts. She and her partner, Virtue Destroyer, had been doing this almost as long as humankind had been around. But this same tedious routine was beginning to bore her. After millennia of doing the same thing, she wanted more action. Other dark angels had gone to earth to mate with humans, and produce the Nephilim. Copulating for the sake of producin
g offspring didn’t appeal to her. But why couldn’t she go to earth, appear as a human to other flesh and blood, and work her reprobate modus vivendi in person? After all, if you wanted to work them into your twisted plans, what better way than right under their noses? Yes-s-s-s, torment them directly in their presence, appearing to be one of them.

Rising to her feet, she headed from her cave towards VD’s cave; then stopped. “Why should I tell her anything? She’s seems to be getting soft, lately, and I don’t need to be hanging around such an influence. All she does is mope and moan about how she felt when she was once an angel. Well, I don’t need that pathetic way of thinking in my life. It’s time I took matters into my own hands.” As if to contradict her, VD appeared on the horizon, coming towards her.

“Hi, Poisonous. What kind of trouble are we going to cause today?”

“I’m not sure,” she answered, voice flat and emotionless. “I’m thinking of hanging out on Earth, maybe as human flesh.”

VD’s eyes opened wide, then took on a puzzled look. “But why? And to do what? Why appear as a human? Isn’t it better to work your evil into their hearts without them knowing it?”

Poisonous looked at her with disdain, as though she was a senior demon dealing with a newbie. “Well, you can do that if you like, but I like my idea better. In fact, I’m thinking of doing it on my own.” A slightly annoyed glance shot in VD’s direction, trying to appear as nonchalant about the issue as possible.

The hurt look on her old partner’s face came as no surprise. “On your own? But…but we’ve been partners since before the rebellion in Heaven. Why can’t we continue to be partners?”

“VD…you’ve always been a great partner,” she explained, “but I think I need to expand my horizons. Your ideas about being a demon are too pedestrian; too predictable.”

“But, we’ve always done this. Why are you suddenly changing the way you do things? Our methods and our teamwork have always worked before.”

“Yes, but I’m in the mood for a change. I’m getting kind of tired of doing the same old thing the same way all the time. I need to try something new—by myself.”

VD remained silent, staring at her unbelieving. “Are you sure this is what you want to do?” The hurt look in VD’s eyes had grown to being on the verge of tears.

Poisonous ignored the pain in VD’s eyes, and pressed on with her plan. “Yes, VD. I’m sure this is what I want to do.”

Now tears fell down the face of her old partner. VD did her best to hide it, but wasn’t succeeding. “Well, do what you want, Poisonous. I’m not going to beg you to change your mind.”

Disgust at the tenderness of her partner grew. One of her long tentacles stretched in VD’s direction and gave her a fast, hard slap.

“Owww! Why’d you do that?” asked VD, rubbing her face.

“I’m trying to get you to see how pathetic you’re acting. You know, VD: one of the reasons I need a change is because you’re becoming soft on me. Look at you; you’re crying, and such emotions are very unbecoming a demon. You need to buck up, girl. Get tough—let hatred motivate you; and for the sake of all that is vile and immoral, stop crying! You’re embarrassing me. Besides, you heard what Lucifer said…for the umpteenth time,” she said, sighing with boredom, and rolling her eyes.

“I’m sorry to be a bother, Poisonous. I guess I’ll leave now, and let you get on with your plans.” Tears drizzling down her face, she turned and walked away.

“And don’t tell any other demon or Lucifer what I’m up to. There’s nothing more humiliating than being dragged into Hell by the twisted creatures that dwell there.”

VD turned around, and with expressionless eyes, said, “I won’t. Don’t worry. You’re still my friend, even though you don’t want to be around me any more,” then walked away.

Poisonous thought for a minute as VD walked away. “Not to mention that you’re in agony forever. I’d like to avoid that at all costs.” Looking back in the direction where VD had left, exasperation again overtook her. “Oh, grief and maliciousness. Her emotions are ruining her and my dedication to my duty. I say, good riddance. I am in the habit of being heartless, and I intend to stay that way.” Turning back to her cave, she resumed thinking about her plan. “I’ll need to think of things to do physically, as well as just planting thoughts in their feeble little minds. Hmmm…” Poisonous sat still, thoughtful. The longer she mused, the broader the smile on her face. “Oh, yes-s-s-s, I like that…” More thoughts, and she snickered. “Oh my perniciousness, this is just delicious.”

She looked around to be sure no other demons were looking, and changed into human form. “It’s too bad there are no mirrors here. Maybe I’ll make a quick trip to Earth, and have a look-see.” She flew towards D.C. where she plied her mischief, and landed in a bathroom inside of Metro Center. Looking around to be sure no human was there, she materialized, then turned her demonic self into a human. Walking to a mirror, she beheld the creature that she’d become. She appeared to be a young woman of Indian descent.

Walking up the stairs of the Metro Station, and out into the sultry weather and busy streets of D.C. in the summer time, she studied the reaction of the humans as she walked among them. No human reacted when they saw her, and this pleased her. What she didn’t see coming was a spirit of Murder and Hatred coming towards her.

“Why are you in human form?” the spirit asked.

Thinking quickly, and not wanting trouble, she said, “I’m just seeing what it feels like.”

Glaring at her with eyes of slits, the demon said, “If I catch you in human form again, I’ll be sure to kill your human body myself, and have you dragged to Hell, immediately. Do I make myself clear?”

Knowing better than to argue with the most vicious and powerful of the dark spirits, she immediately changed back to a Lust Nymph, and headed back to her cave in the Second Heavens. “Phew. That was a little too close. I’d better be sure to tell no one when I go back to Earth.” Regretting having told of her plans to VD, Poisonous flew to VD’s cave, and entered without announcing herself. “I have something to say to you,” she said.

Startled, VD jumped and held her chest. “You scared me.” Calming down, she asked, “What do you want with me now? I thought you were going to work on your own.”

Stone faced, she answered, “I am. I just want you to be sure to tell no one. I just met a demon of Murder and Hatred, and he almost killed me.”

“Well, you wanted to do it your way. I can’t help it if there is danger involved,” VD said, crossing her arms, and looking defiantly at her old partner. “But, as I said, I’ll tell no one out of what used to be our friendship.”

Ignoring the emotion in VD’s voice, she said, “Good. I’m counting on you to do the right thing by me.”

VD didn’t answer: she just stood there, staring and saying nothing.

She flew back to her cave, and hung from the ceiling with her claws. She didn’t hear him coming, but one of Lucifer’s personal aides flew into her cave. She fell from the ceiling, and landed on the floor. “Owww. Couldn’t you have at least warned me you were coming?”

He ignored her plea, and said, “What you need to do is heed my warning. I’ve heard from Dark Death that you have been spotted imitating a human without the proper authorization. If you’re caught again, you will be immediately dragged into the Abyss, by the Sentinels of Hell. Are we understood?”

“Yes, I understand you,” she said, impetuousness in her voice.

“You’d better,” he said, then flew away.

Shortly after the aide of Lucifer had left, her eyes turned to the throne of Lucifer. Poisonous yawned, uninterested. “You and your boring ideas. I need a change of pace, and to do something other than following your archaic, worn-out plans. I’ve made up my mind, and I’m heading to Earth to wreak havoc, Hell or no Hell.” The smile on her face grew larger with each passing moment. Then she screeched with pure demonic joy, as she prepared to land on earth, and ply her trade in twisting th
e thoughts and intentions of human beings, as well as inflicting pain and suffering—in the flesh, so to speak.

  * * *

Her black heart pounded within her, pumping a source of venom and death, and added to her lust for leading sons and daughter of men to destroy themselves with meaningless relationships and a twisted view of the Father, Lord Yehovah.

The first thing she needed to do was to pay a visit to one of her favorite victims: Shane Logan. He was an extremely handsome rake that she had trained since he was about twelve years old and such a good learner. “I made sure that Evie could not convince her sister that Shane is a debaucher, and that Gracie’s virtue got tarnished. They left Shane, but I have more poisonous lust to fill his heart with.”

Alighting in the Friendship Heights neighborhood of D.C. she descended the stairs of the Friendship Heights Metro station, went into the women’s room, and changed into human form, wearing a very revealing outfit to accentuate her female features. Walking out of the Metro station, and up the street, she entered the Chase Point Condos, and took the elevator to the eighth floor. Arriving at unit 898, she knocked on the door. Deep blue eyes met hers, and took in her form before he said a word. “Hi. I’m a new neighbor of yours. I was wondering if you could answer a few questions for me about the apartment complex?”

“Sure,” he answered, “Come on in.” Once seated, he asked her, “May I get you a drink?”

“Certainly. Would you make me a Bloody Mary, with lot’s of hot sauce in it?”

He returned from his liquor stand, gave her the drink and then sat down next to her. “It’s nice to meet you. I’m Shane Logan,” he said, taking her hand in his.

“I’m Perri Loliyekar; nice to meet you, Shane.

Shane said, “To answer your question, I’ve lived in this complex for about four years; moved in shortly after college when I got my first job. I like it for the location, first: it’s right near the Friendship Heights Metro station. Second, it attracts young people like myself who like to work hard and party harder. What brought you here to these condos?”

Poisonous pondered her answer for a few moments. “I moved here because I heard that this is a place full of young people who like to have fun. I’m all for fun, you know.” Her body moved closer to his, skin touching him . “What do you like to do for fun? I sure hope you’re not one of those people who likes card games or board games, or considers going bowling a hot night on the town,” she said, eyebrows creased, and eyes filled with disdain.
